To get deeper bass, check how low your main speakers are specified to play, improve their placement, and add a powered subwoofer if they cannot reach the lowest notes you want. The room and listening position can change the result substantially, so a speaker’s published bass figure alone cannot predict what you will hear.
How do I get deeper bass from my speakers?
Start with the speakers you have: find their low-frequency response specification, place the left and right speakers symmetrically as a starting point, and keep their sound paths clear. If they are rear-ported, Klipsch advises leaving some space behind them rather than placing them directly against a wall. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, and follow the instructions for your particular speakers.
If the main speakers do not extend far enough into the low frequencies, a powered subwoofer can fill in some of the missing bass. It is designed to reproduce the lowest frequencies and can complement either bookshelf or floorstanding speakers. The practical result will still depend on the room, placement, system settings, and listening position.
What does speaker frequency response mean?
A frequency-response specification describes the span of frequencies a speaker is claimed to reproduce. The low-frequency endpoint is the figure most relevant to deep bass; the high-frequency endpoint describes the treble limit. The tolerance matters: a claim such as “21 Hz–29 kHz ±3 dB” includes a stated level variation, rather than promising perfectly even output at every frequency in that range. Klipsch uses that format as an example in its speaker specifications guidance.

Compare specifications cautiously. Manufacturer figures may use different conditions, and they are not automatically equivalent just because the numbers look similar. For example, SVS lists the PC-2000 Pro’s response as “17Hz to 290Hz +/-3dB (sealed mode)” on its product page. That is a manufacturer specification for the stated mode, not an independent measurement or a guarantee of in-room output.
Power ratings are not a shortcut to predicting which speaker will sound louder. Klipsch notes that peak or average power alone does not settle loudness; sensitivity and other factors also matter. Use power specifications to check system suitability, not as a stand-alone ranking of bass performance.

Do I need a subwoofer for deep bass?
Not necessarily. Whether you need one depends on how deeply your main speakers reproduce bass, the output you want, and what you hear in your room. A subwoofer is a sensible option when the main speakers leave the lowest notes weak or absent, or when you want the system to handle deep bass without asking smaller speakers to reproduce it.

Where should I place a subwoofer?
Bass below approximately 80 Hz is generally perceived as non-directional, according to Klipsch’s placement guidance, which gives many subwoofers more placement flexibility than full-range speakers. But the room still affects what reaches a particular seat. A corner may make the subwoofer sound louder; louder is not automatically smoother or better.
- Try the listening-position method. Klipsch suggests putting the subwoofer at the seat where you listen, playing bass, then moving around the room to find a spot where it sounds good. Place the subwoofer in that spot and listen from your usual seat.
- Test more than one location. Compare a corner with other workable positions. Choose by the quality and consistency of bass at the listening position, not by output level alone.
- Keep the port clear on a ported model. Klipsch advises leaving clearance around the port exit and avoiding obstruction by a nearby wall. The model’s manual takes precedence over general guidance.
Klipsch emphasizes that room, speaker, and component setups vary, so placement is a matter of trying positions rather than applying one universal layout. Its subwoofer-location guidance explains the listening-position test and corner placement.

How do I set the crossover between speakers and a subwoofer?
The crossover controls how bass is divided between the main speakers and the subwoofer. Set it in relation to the bass extension and output capability of the speakers in each channel, then listen for a blend rather than a distinct handoff. Larger floorstanding speakers and smaller bookshelf or surround speakers may call for different settings; Klipsch’s examples are starting points, not universal prescriptions.
- Check the bass capability of the speakers assigned to each receiver channel.
- Choose crossover settings that suit those speakers rather than applying one value to every channel by default.
- Listen to familiar material and adjust if bass sounds disconnected from the main speakers or weak around the transition.
Klipsch’s crossover guidance provides examples for different speaker sizes. Use your receiver and speaker manuals for the controls and recommendations specific to your equipment.

Would a second subwoofer help?
A second subwoofer may help make bass more consistent across several seats, depending on the room and placement. It is not an automatic upgrade: the benefit depends on how the subwoofers interact with the space and where listeners sit. If one seat is the priority, first optimize the position and integration of a single subwoofer. For a wider listening area, evaluate the result across the seats that matter rather than judging from one location.
