For a more comfortable night, aim for gentle, even sensor contact—not a tighter band. Choose a model intended for lying down, move hair away from its sensors, make small position adjustments, and give the sensors time to settle before starting a session. Fit and setup vary by device; the steps below distinguish Muse’s model-specific instructions from general comfort advice.

Set up the headband before you get into bed

A little preparation can prevent a poor fit from turning into repeated adjustments once you are trying to sleep. Charge the device according to its own instructions. For a Muse sleep session, Muse recommends charging for three hours beforehand. A fully charged headband also lets you concentrate on fit rather than stopping to solve a power problem.

Check that you have the correct headband for the experience you plan to use. Muse says its sleep experiences require a Muse S model, including Gen 1, Gen 2, or Athena. If your goal is sleep tracking, confirm compatibility in the current instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that a headband marketed for meditation or daytime EEG will work in bed.

If you are choosing a headband specifically for bed, check the manufacturer’s guidance on lying-down use. Muse describes Muse S as suitable for lying down, while Muse 2 and Original Muse are designed for upright use and may be less likely to keep skin contact when you lie down. Those statements apply to Muse models, not to EEG headbands generally. A different manufacturer may use another sensor layout, retention system, or intended-use limitation.

Prepare the contact areas

Start with the forehead and the areas around and behind the ears clear enough for the sensors and band to sit as designed. Loose hair can get between a sensor and skin. Hair products or skin products on the contact areas can also interfere with the signal according to Muse’s troubleshooting guidance. You do not need to make the entire scalp bare; the practical goal is simply to move hair and remove product from the specific points that must touch skin.

Have the headband, phone or tablet, and any optional audio equipment within reach before lying down. That reduces the temptation to twist the band or pull it tighter while you are already in a comfortable position. If you use a CPAP mask or hearing aids, put them on during your fit check so you can see whether they block the intended sensor locations.

Fit it for contact, not compression

Position a Muse S as directed

For Muse S, center the pod on your forehead. Position the band behind your ears and low at the base of your skull. Move loose hair out from between the sensors and your skin so the contact points can sit against the intended areas. Follow the fitting instructions for your own model if its sensor layout differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the position from more than one angle. The pod should remain centered rather than drifting toward one temple, and the rear portion should stay low enough to follow the fitting path described by Muse. If you sleep on your side, the band may feel different after your head meets the pillow. Make a small positional change while lying in your normal sleeping posture, then reassess rather than tightening the entire band.

Make small adjustments

The band should feel secure enough to maintain contact without pressing painfully or creating a strong, uneven squeeze. Muse’s sleep guide puts it simply: “Your Muse should feel snug, but not tight. If it feels uncomfortable, gently adjust the position rather than tightening it.” Snug means the sensors remain in contact when you move normally; it does not mean you should feel a hard pressure line, pinching behind an ear, or a headache developing across your forehead.

If the fit feels too tight, shift the band or its position instead of pulling it tighter. Move the rear section slightly, recenter the pod, or clear a strand of hair that is forcing you to increase tension. Change one thing at a time. Several simultaneous changes make it difficult to tell whether the pressure came from the band, the pod, a hair obstruction, or another accessory.

Head shape, hair, sleeping position, and accessories can all affect how a particular setup feels. A fit that works while sitting up may shift when you lie down. There is no documented comfort percentage or universal adjustment time that applies to all EEG headbands, so treat the first fit as something to adjust gently rather than a measurement to force. Do not copy a friend’s tension or position; the same setting can feel different on another head.

Give the sensors time to settle before starting

Once the headband is positioned, stay still for a few minutes and notice whether any point is pressing, pinching, or slipping. Muse’s sleep setup guide recommends wearing the headband for 3–5 minutes before beginning a session. That is Muse guidance for its sleep setup, not a universal waiting period for other devices. For another product, use the maker’s stated settling or calibration procedure.

Use the settling period as a quiet fit check. Lie in the position in which you expect to fall asleep, then make one small adjustment if the band shifts or a contact point feels uneven. Wait again before deciding whether another change is needed. A sensor may need time to establish stable contact after you move the pod or band, so repeatedly repositioning it in quick succession can make the check less useful.

Muse says comfort often improves after a night or two. That is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that discomfort will go away. Do not try to endure pain in the expectation that the band will become comfortable with continued use. If a pressure point remains painful after a gentle repositioning, remove the headband and review the fitting and safety instructions.

Improve a weak or inconsistent sensor signal

A weak signal and an uncomfortable fit often have the same basic causes: a sensor is not touching the intended skin area, the band moved when you lay down, or hair or product is between the sensor and skin. Start with the contact and position before increasing tension. A tighter band can create more pressure without correcting a sensor that is sitting in the wrong place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Muse, the troubleshooting guidance recommends removing hair or skin products from sensor contact areas, adjusting the band, and applying a small amount of water to the forehead and sensors. Use moisture only if your specific model’s instructions allow it; sensor designs and setup methods differ. Apply only the amount directed by the manufacturer, and do not substitute creams, oils, or other products.

  1. Check contact: Move loose hair away from every sensor point and confirm that the pod and rear band are in the positions specified for your model.
  2. Check the lying-down fit: Recreate your normal sleep position and see whether the pod has shifted or the band has ridden up behind the ears.
  3. Reposition gently: Make a small change to the band or pod rather than increasing tension to force contact.
  4. Clean the contact areas as directed: Remove hair or skin products if the maker’s troubleshooting instructions call for it.
  5. Use model-approved moisture only: Muse’s guidance includes a small amount of water on the forehead and sensors; do not assume that method applies to another headband.
  6. Wait and recheck: Give the sensors time to settle after an adjustment before assessing the signal again.
  7. Stop if pressure develops: Signal quality is not a reason to tolerate pain. Remove the device if the fit becomes painful.

If the signal remains poor, consult the device maker’s setup and troubleshooting instructions rather than continuing to tighten or reposition it repeatedly. The correct fix may be model-specific, and a method that helps one sensor arrangement may not be appropriate for another.

Choose a model and size with bed use in mind

Model descriptions, compatibility, and fit measurements are manufacturer-specific. Muse’s fitting guide lists different measurement paths for Muse S and Muse 2, so the figures below are not directly comparable circumference measurements.

Model or family Bed-use and sleep compatibility Fit measurement listed by Muse
Muse S Athena and Gen 2 Muse describes Muse S models as usable while lying down. Muse says sleep experiences require Muse S, including Gen 1, Gen 2, and Athena. 46–63 cm, measured from the forehead to low at the base of the skull.
Muse 2 Designed for upright use; Muse says it is less likely to maintain skin contact while lying down. It is not listed as compatible with Muse sleep experiences. 30–35 cm, measured around the forehead to the back of each ear.
Original Muse Designed for upright use; Muse says it is less likely to maintain skin contact while lying down. It is not listed as compatible with Muse sleep experiences. Not stated in the cited Muse fitting guidance.

The measurements are from Muse’s undated official fitting guide. Check the current instructions for the exact model you own, and do not use one model’s measurement path to judge another model’s fit. The numbers describe how Muse tells you to measure that product; they do not establish a universal head-size standard for EEG headbands.

When comparing products, evaluate intended sleeping position, sensor placement, compatibility with the app or sleep experience you want, and whether your hair, pillow position, or other equipment will obstruct contact. A model described as suitable for lying down may still feel uncomfortable for a particular sleeper. Manufacturer guidance can explain the intended fit, but it cannot promise that every head shape or sleeping style will work equally well.

Keep audio from adding pressure

Audio is optional for Muse sleep tracking. Muse says you can track sleep without audio, so silent tracking is a useful first-night option if you are still solving the physical fit. Start the session without headphones or earbuds and determine whether the headband itself remains comfortable before adding another source of pressure.

If you use an audio experience, choose headphones or earbuds that remain comfortable when lying down. A rigid earbud, an over-ear cushion, or a cable caught under your shoulder can become the most painful part of the setup even when the EEG band is correctly positioned. Audio does not require headphones: Muse says sound can play through a phone or tablet in a quiet room. Keep the device placed where it will not force you to stretch or twist the band to reach it.

If audio equipment pushes on the band, blocks behind-the-ear contact, or makes you wake up to adjust it, remove the audio gear and use silent tracking. Audio should support the session, not determine how tightly you wear the headband.

Check compatibility with other equipment

CPAP masks

Muse says compatibility depends on whether a particular CPAP mask blocks forehead or behind-the-ear sensor contact. It does not make a general compatibility claim across mask designs. Compare the mask’s contact points with the sensor locations for your headband while wearing the mask in your normal sleeping position.

Do not move a sensor onto an unapproved location just to work around a mask. If the mask covers the forehead or presses against the rear band, ask the relevant manufacturers whether the arrangement is supported. A setup that works with one CPAP design may not work with another, even if both masks are intended for the same therapy.

Hearing aids

Muse notes that some hearing aids worn behind or on top of the ear may obstruct sensor contact, while in-ear hearing aids should work more readily. The actual fit depends on the hearing aid and headband arrangement. Check whether the band can sit in its intended position without pushing on the hearing aid, covering a sensor, or creating pressure around the ear.

If you need to remove or reposition hearing aids for the session, follow the instructions from your hearing-care professional and the device makers. Do not force the headband over a hearing aid that is being compressed or displaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop if wearing it causes pain

Discomfort that does not resolve with a gentle repositioning is a reason to remove the device, not tighten it further. Muse advises users to stop using its device and contact its support team if use causes discomfort or pain. Persistent pressure, pinching, numbness, skin irritation, or a headache should not be treated as a normal part of adjusting to an overnight fit.

Muse says its devices are not medical devices and should not be used to diagnose, treat, or cure conditions. It also says Muse S contains magnets. If you have an implant or medical device, consult a medical provider before using Muse S. These cautions are specific to Muse’s stated product guidance; check the safety information for any other EEG headband you use.

If you experience pain, remove the headband, note where the pressure occurred, and contact the manufacturer if you need help interpreting the fit. Do not resume simply because the session has not finished. Comfort advice cannot override a product safety warning or medical guidance.

A low-pressure first-night routine

  1. Charge first: Charge according to the model’s instructions; Muse recommends three hours before a sleep session.
  2. Confirm the model: Verify that the headband supports lying-down use and the sleep experience you intend to start.
  3. Clear the contact points: Move hair away and remove products from the forehead and other sensor areas as directed.
  4. Put on related equipment: If you use CPAP or hearing aids, include them in the fit check.
  5. Place the band: For Muse S, center the pod on the forehead and place the band behind the ears and low at the base of the skull.
  6. Settle gently: Aim for snug, even contact. If anything feels uncomfortable, reposition rather than tightening.
  7. Wait: Muse recommends 3–5 minutes before starting its sleep session. Use the equivalent model-specific instruction for another device.
  8. Begin simply: Start with silent tracking if headphones or earbuds add pressure.
  9. Reassess discomfort promptly: Stop and remove the device if pain persists, then contact support or a medical professional when appropriate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Over-tightening to fix signal quality: Tension cannot replace correct sensor placement or clear skin contact.
  • Leaving hair under a sensor: A small obstruction can prevent the intended contact point from touching skin.
  • Assuming all models are interchangeable: Muse identifies different bed-use capabilities for Muse S, Muse 2, and Original Muse.
  • Comparing size numbers without checking the measuring path: Muse’s 46–63 cm and 30–35 cm figures are obtained in different ways.
  • Starting immediately after a major adjustment: Give the sensors time to settle before judging the signal or comfort.
  • Adding audio before solving the fit: Headphones and earbuds are optional and can create new pressure points.
  • Ignoring equipment conflicts: CPAP masks and behind- or on-top-of-ear hearing aids can block sensor areas.
  • Trying to sleep through pain: Manufacturer guidance says to stop use when discomfort or pain occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tight should an EEG headband be?

It should be snug enough to maintain sensor contact but not tight or painful. Muse’s guidance says to gently adjust the position if it feels uncomfortable instead of tightening it further. Fit requirements vary by model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I sleep with an EEG headband on?

Only if the specific model is intended for lying-down or sleep use. Muse describes Muse S as suitable for lying down and says its sleep experiences require Muse S. Muse 2 and Original Muse are designed for upright use and may lose skin contact in bed.

What should I do if my EEG headband is uncomfortable?

Make a small positional adjustment, clear hair from the sensor areas, and allow the contact to settle. If discomfort or pain continues, remove the device and contact the manufacturer. Do not keep tightening it.

How long should I wear it before starting a sleep session?

Muse’s sleep setup guide recommends wearing the headband for 3–5 minutes before beginning. That interval is model-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every EEG headband.

Can I track sleep without headphones?

Yes. Muse says audio is optional and sleep can be tracked without headphones. Audio can also play through a phone or tablet in a quiet room. Use earbuds or headphones only if they do not create pressure or interfere with the band.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the EEG signal is weak?

Check that sensors touch skin, move hair and products away from contact points, confirm the band has not shifted, and make a small adjustment. Muse also recommends a small amount of water on the forehead and sensors; use that step only if your model’s instructions permit it, then wait for the sensors to settle.

Can I use an EEG headband with CPAP?

Compatibility depends on the particular CPAP mask. Muse says a mask may interfere if it blocks forehead or behind-the-ear sensor contact and does not make a universal claim across designs. Compare the mask and sensor positions and consult the relevant manufacturers if contact is blocked.

Will hearing aids interfere with the headband?

Some behind- or on-top-of-ear hearing aids may obstruct sensor contact. Muse says in-ear hearing aids should work more readily, but the actual fit depends on both devices. Check that the band can sit in its intended position without pressure.

Is it normal to feel pain while adjusting to an EEG headband?

Pain is not a condition to push through. Muse advises stopping use and contacting support if its device causes discomfort or pain. Remove the headband and review the fitting and safety instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Muse S if I have an implant or medical device?

Muse says Muse S contains magnets and advises people with implants or medical devices to consult a medical provider before use. Follow that advice and review the safety information for your specific device.

The Bottom Line

For bed use, choose a headband designed for lying down, keep every sensor on clear skin, and aim for snug—not tight—contact. With Muse S, center the pod on your forehead and place the band behind the ears and low at the base of the skull. Make one small adjustment at a time, wait for the sensors to settle, and begin without audio if accessories add pressure. Stop if the setup causes pain, and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific safety and compatibility instructions.
