Ask for a friendly, focused critique, not a debate. Give ChatGPT the idea and the decision it affects, add the audience and constraints that change the answer, request one or two material assumptions or trade-offs with reasons and practical fixes, and describe the tone you want. Then review the response and refine the prompt if it repeats obvious caveats, misses context, or argues about wording.
This approach follows OpenAI guidance on clear tasks, context, descriptive tone instructions, iteration, and human review. It can make criticism more useful, but no prompt guarantees a consistently polite tone or a correct judgment.
What you are actually asking ChatGPT to do
A useful challenge tests an idea against the decision you are trying to make. It identifies a weakness that could change the outcome, explains why that weakness matters, and offers a way to strengthen the plan. An argumentative exchange is different: it can turn into point-scoring, repeat objections you have already answered, or focus on proving that your wording is wrong.
State the difference explicitly. Ask ChatGPT to critique the idea, stay within the decision you named, and raise only material issues. Tell it to acknowledge what is already strong and to ask a clarifying question when a missing fact would change the analysis. These boundaries give the model a narrower job than “tell me what you think.”

OpenAI Academy describes ChatGPT as a thought partner for organizing ideas and pressure-testing plans. Its brainstorming guidance recommends starting from the decision, adding constraints such as audience, timeline, capacity, and success measures, and separating idea generation from later evaluation. See OpenAI Academy’s Brainstorming with ChatGPT guide (published April 10, 2026).
The prompt pattern that invites challenge without a fight
Use five ingredients in this order. Keeping them together prevents a common failure mode in which the model receives a vague request, invents its own assumptions, and then defends those assumptions.
1. Name the idea and the decision
Describe the proposal, claim, or choice in concrete terms, then say what you need to decide. “I want to launch a paid newsletter for independent designers; I am deciding whether to start with a weekly or monthly schedule” gives ChatGPT a decision to analyze. “What do you think?” does not.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 112. Supply the context that changes the answer
Include the intended audience, goal, timeline, available capacity, budget or technical limits, and what you have already tried. Add success measures when you have them. Context is not a biography: include facts that would make a reasonable critic reach a different conclusion.
For example, a software architecture choice could depend on a two-person team, a six-month deadline, a requirement for offline operation, and an existing JavaScript codebase. Without those facts, ChatGPT may recommend an approach that is impressive but infeasible.
3. Limit the critique to material issues
Ask for one or two assumptions, weaknesses, counterexamples, or trade-offs that could materially affect the decision. “Find every possible problem” encourages a long list of low-value objections. A small scope also makes it easier to judge whether each criticism applies.
OpenAI Academy gives the compact example, What’s one thing that could make this stronger?
Use that wording when you want a single improvement rather than a full review.

4. Require a reason and an action
For each issue, request a short explanation of why it matters and a practical change, test, or question that would address it. This turns disagreement into decision support. If the model cannot connect an objection to an outcome, the point may be interesting but not material.
5. Describe the tone and boundaries
Ask for a friendly, direct, focused critique of the idea rather than the person. Instruct ChatGPT to acknowledge what is clear or strong, avoid repeating caveats you have already covered, and ask a clarifying question if essential context is missing. Tone instructions are useful guidance, not a behavioral guarantee.
A reusable prompt
Copy this template, then replace the bracketed text with your situation:
Here’s my idea and what I’m trying to decide: [describe the idea and the decision].
Context that matters:
- Audience: [who this is for]
- Goal or success measure: [what a good result looks like]
- Constraints: [time, budget, capacity, technical or legal limits]
- What I have already considered or tried: [briefly list it]
Please give me a friendly, focused critique. Identify one or two material assumptions, weaknesses, or trade-offs I may have missed. Explain why each matters to this decision and suggest a practical way to strengthen the idea, test it, or reduce the risk. Acknowledge what is already clear or strong. Avoid repeating caveats I have already addressed. If important context is missing, ask one clarifying question before drawing a firm conclusion. Focus on the idea, not on me, and do not turn this into a debate about wording.
The wording above is an editorial synthesis of the practices in OpenAI’s official guidance; it is not a formula that OpenAI has validated in a controlled test.
Build the prompt step by step
- Write the decision in one sentence. Use an observable choice, such as “Should I pilot this with one customer segment first?” rather than a broad question about whether the idea is good.
- Describe the idea at the level needed for a decision. Include the proposed action, who would use it, and the result you expect. Leave out background that cannot change the assessment.
- Add constraints and prior work. State the deadline, resources, audience, dependencies, and objections you have already examined. If you have data, label it as an estimate, observation, or requirement.
- Choose the critique size. Request one issue for a quick check or two or three for a planning review. Ask for material points rather than an exhaustive list.
- Specify the output for each point. A useful structure is: issue, why it matters, evidence or assumption involved, and practical next step. You can ask for a table when several trade-offs need to be compared.
- Set the conversational boundary. Say “friendly, direct, and focused on the idea.” Tell ChatGPT not to repeat points you have already addressed and to ask a question when context is insufficient.
- Read the answer as a hypothesis. Check whether each criticism refers to your actual proposal and constraints. Do not treat fluent wording as proof that the point is true.
- Refine once the gap is visible. Point to the specific miss: “You assumed a six-month build; the deadline is six weeks. Re-evaluate only the schedule risk.” Narrow follow-ups are more useful than starting over with “try again.”
OpenAI’s Help Center recommends clear, specific prompts with enough context, descriptive tone instructions, and iterative refinement after reviewing an answer. Its current guidance is available at Prompt engineering best practices for ChatGPT.
Vague invitation versus contextualized critique
The two styles below illustrate why specificity helps. Official guidance supports the dimensions in this table, but it does not report a head-to-head measurement showing that one wording always outperforms the other.
| Prompt style | Typical wording | Likely limitation | How to improve it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vague invitation | “What do you think of my plan?” | ChatGPT must guess your goal, audience, constraints, and the kind of response you want. | Name the decision, context, and one or two material issues to examine. |
| Adversarial request | “Prove this plan is wrong.” | It frames the exchange as a contest and may produce objections that are dramatic but not useful. | Ask for a friendly critique, reasons, and a practical strengthening step. |
| Contextualized request | “Given this audience, deadline, and success measure, identify two assumptions that could change the decision and explain how to test them.” | It still depends on the accuracy and completeness of the context you supplied. | Review the assumptions, correct missing facts, and run a focused follow-up. |

We are deciding whether to build a paid analytics dashboard for small agencies this quarter. The audience has one to five staff members, our team has two engineers, and success means ten agencies using the feature weekly within 90 days. We already interviewed six customers and heard requests for exportable reports, but we have not tested willingness to pay.
Give me a friendly, focused critique. Identify two material assumptions or trade-offs that could change the build decision. Explain why each matters and propose a low-cost test or scope change. Acknowledge the evidence that supports the idea, avoid generic warnings, and ask one clarifying question if a missing fact is decisive.

Writing or presentation plan
Situation: You want to publish a technical guide for beginners and are choosing between a detailed tutorial and a shorter checklist.
I am deciding whether to publish a 2,000-word tutorial or a 900-word checklist for beginners setting up a local development environment. Readers are junior developers, the guide must be usable in one sitting, and success means fewer setup questions after publication. I can maintain only one format this month.
Please provide a friendly critique of the choice. Identify one or two material trade-offs involving completion, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Explain why they matter for these readers and suggest a concrete outline or small test. Recognize what is already clear, do not argue about my writing style, and ask a question only if the audience or environment is unclear.
Technical architecture choice
Situation: You are weighing a managed service against a component your team would operate itself.
We need to choose between a managed queue service and operating a queue cluster ourselves for an internal reporting system. Two developers will maintain it, the first release is due in six weeks, reports can tolerate a 15-minute delay, and the system must run during a temporary loss of the public internet. We already have monitoring for our current database but no on-call rotation.
Challenge this decision without turning it into a debate. Identify the two most material operational assumptions, explain how each affects delivery or reliability, and propose a small validation exercise or requirement change. State which facts would make your recommendation change.
Here, the offline requirement and the lack of on-call capacity are decision constraints, not invitations for the model to invent a different project. If ChatGPT ignores them, quote the relevant constraint in your follow-up and ask for a re-evaluation.
Personal or career decision
Situation: You are deciding whether to accept a role that offers more responsibility but requires a longer commute.

I am deciding whether to accept a product operations role with a 75-minute commute each way. The role would expand my management experience, pay 12 percent more, and require three office days per week. My priority is reaching a senior management role within two years, and I currently have a remote schedule. I have not calculated the travel cost or how the commute would affect family responsibilities.
Give me a friendly critique of the decision, not a verdict about my character. Identify two assumptions or trade-offs I should examine, explain why they matter to my stated goal, and suggest questions to ask the employer or calculations to make. Acknowledge the potential career upside and avoid generic advice.
When ChatGPT sounds argumentative: targeted repairs
Do not respond to a poor critique with a broader instruction such as “be nicer.” Name the behavior and give the model a narrower job.
It debates your wording instead of the idea
Reply: Set aside wording and evaluate the proposed action. Use the audience, deadline, and success measure I gave you. Return one material risk and one mitigation.
If the wording itself is the decision, explain that explicitly; otherwise, keep language questions out of scope.

It repeats a caveat you already answered
Reply: I have already addressed [specific caveat] by [your evidence or constraint]. Do not repeat it. Find a different issue that could materially change the decision, or say that no additional material issue is apparent from the information provided.
This prevents a longer list of the same generic warning.
It produces a long list of minor objections
Reply: Rank the concerns by potential effect on [success measure]. Keep only the top two and explain the threshold at which each would change the decision.
Asking for a threshold converts vague concern into a testable condition.

Turn criticism into a decision process
Separate generation from evaluation
For brainstorming, ask for several possible approaches without judging them. In a second prompt, choose the criteria and ask ChatGPT to pressure-test the shortlist. Mixing both jobs can cause the model to reject ideas before you have explored them. OpenAI Academy recommends separating broad idea generation from later evaluation in its brainstorming guidance.

Use a materiality test
For every criticism, ask three questions: Could this issue change the decision? Is there evidence or a stated assumption behind it? What inexpensive action would reduce the uncertainty? Keep a concern in the plan only when it passes at least one of those tests and is relevant to your success measure.
Ask for alternatives, not just objections
A critique is more useful when it offers a smaller pilot, a different sequence, a revised audience, or a measurement change. Phrase the request as “suggest a practical way to strengthen, test, or narrow the idea,” not “solve everything.” The model can propose options; you decide which are feasible.
Request a conditional conclusion
Instead of asking for a definitive yes or no, ask: “Under what conditions would this be sensible, and what evidence would make you pause?” Conditional reasoning exposes the assumptions carrying the recommendation and reduces false certainty.

Save the original idea, the constraints you supplied, the critique, and the changes you accepted or rejected. How the official guidance fits together
Four pieces of OpenAI guidance support this method, with different emphases:
- Brainstorming with ChatGPT recommends starting from a decision, adding constraints such as audience, timeline, capacity, and success measures, pressure-testing a plan, and using the example
What’s one thing that could make this stronger?
It was published April 10, 2026. - Prompt engineering best practices for ChatGPT advises clear and specific instructions, sufficient context, descriptive tone guidance, and iterative refinement. The page does not expose a publication date in the current listing.
- Prompting, last updated September 4, 2026, advises outlining what is needed, who the work is for, and why it matters, then adjusting the request when the first answer is not right.
- Run a prompt challenge, last updated June 12, 2026, emphasizes human review and dealing directly with unreliable output quality.
None of these pages establishes a validated prompt formula, a success rate for reducing argumentative replies, or a guarantee that tone instructions will be followed. Treat the reusable template as a practical starting point, then judge each response against your actual decision.
A quick checklist before you press send
- Have I named the specific idea and the decision it affects?
- Did I include the audience, goal, deadline, capacity, and other constraints that change the answer?
- Did I say what I have already considered so the response does not repeat it?
- Did I request only one or two material assumptions, weaknesses, or trade-offs?
- Did I ask for a reason and a practical test, mitigation, or improvement?
- Did I request a friendly, direct tone focused on the idea rather than the person?
- Did I tell ChatGPT to ask a clarifying question when a missing fact is decisive?
- Do I have a plan to verify factual claims and decide whether each criticism applies?
If the first answer is unhelpful, refine the missing dimension—context, scope, tone, or output format—instead of demanding that ChatGPT simply “try harder.” Iteration is part of the method, not evidence that the original prompt failed.
