To reduce unnecessary follow-up questions, tell ChatGPT to make reasonable assumptions and continue unless a missing detail prevents a safe or useful answer. This is a preference, not a switch that guarantees ChatGPT will never ask you anything.
What prompt can I use to reduce follow-up questions?
For one conversation, paste this instruction at the start of the chat, before your request:
Answer my request directly without asking follow-up questions unless a missing detail prevents a safe or useful answer. When information is missing, make a reasonable assumption, state it briefly, and continue. If you truly cannot proceed, ask one concise question that resolves the blocker.

The instruction does more than say “don’t ask questions”: it tells ChatGPT what to do when details are missing and when a question is still appropriate. It is a practical example based on OpenAI’s advice to make prompts clear and specific and provide enough context; OpenAI does not present this exact wording as an official prompt or guarantee its results. OpenAI’s prompt-engineering guidance also recommends refining prompts when the first response misses the mark.

Should I put it in the chat or Custom Instructions?
Use the chat for a temporary preference; use Custom Instructions if you want similar guidance to carry across conversations. These are two ways to provide direct instructions, not different methods with proven success rates.
| Option | Persistence | Setup | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paste it into a chat | That conversation | Paste once before your request | A one-off task or temporary preference |
| Save it in Custom Instructions | Across chats | Enter it in ChatGPT settings | A recurring response preference |
Save the preference for future chats
- On web or desktop: Open Settings → Personalization, then enter the instruction in Custom Instructions.
- On iOS or Android: Open Settings → Customize ChatGPT, then enter the instruction there.
OpenAI says Custom Instructions are available on web, desktop, iOS, and Android across plans, and that changes apply immediately across chats, including existing conversations. Its Help Center page lists a 1,500-character limit for Free and Go users and a 5,000-character limit for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users; these product details may change. See OpenAI’s Custom Instructions help page for current details.

Why might ChatGPT still ask a question?
ChatGPT can ask follow-up questions, and a preference to proceed with assumptions does not guarantee that it will skip every clarification. OpenAI describes clarification as potentially helpful in some cases, and some workflows have their own needs. For example, Deep Research may ask clarifying questions before starting; OpenAI recommends explaining the question, desired outcome, and constraints.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Don’t force an assumption when the missing detail would make the answer unsafe or unusable. If the request is complex, narrow it to the most important outcome and constraints, or split it into focused prompts. That follows OpenAI’s guidance to right-size requests and prioritize what matters.

What if the questions continue?
- Make the task more specific: say what result you want and include the constraints that matter.
- Name details ChatGPT may assume, such as a default format, audience, or level of detail.
- State the exception clearly: ask only if the missing information blocks a safe or useful answer.
- If it still asks an unnecessary question, answer it once and refine the instruction for the next task.
Custom Instructions and Memory are separate features. Custom Instructions are direct guidance you set; Memory can recall relevant preferences and details from chats and other sources. Memory availability varies with plan, region, platform, and workspace settings, so it is not required for this approach. See OpenAI’s Memory help page for how that feature works.
