In Minecraft: Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4, you can get Brittle Ice in two ways: find it in an Ice Cave crevasse and mine it with a Silk Touch tool, or create it by making water flow horizontally onto a Blue Ice block. Be careful after placing it: a player or ordinary mob stepping on Brittle Ice makes it crack and eventually break.

What Brittle Ice is and where it is available

Brittle Ice is a new Ice Caves block introduced in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4, published on October 13, 2026. It is part of the snapshot’s Ice Cave and crevasse content, so availability described here applies to that Java testing version rather than all Minecraft editions or stable releases.

The official snapshot changelog says Brittle Ice “only generates naturally in Ice Caves as part of the crevasse feature.” In practice, that means searching ordinary frozen-over terrain is not enough: you need to locate an Ice Cave and inspect the surfaces inside its crevasses.

Method 1: Find Brittle Ice in an Ice Cave

Search crevasse surfaces

  1. Launch a world running Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4.
  2. Explore until you find one of the new Ice Caves.
  3. Inspect the crevasse features inside the cave, looking for Brittle Ice on their surfaces.
  4. Do not step onto the block while trying to collect it; contact starts its cracking behavior.

Natural generation is tied specifically to the crevasse feature. The block is therefore an exploration find, not a general replacement for regular Ice, Packed Ice, or Blue Ice.

Use Silk Touch to collect the block

Brittle Ice must be mined with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch if you want the block itself as an item. The official changelog explicitly states, “It is obtainable with Silk Touch.” Without Silk Touch, do not expect to relocate a naturally generated block as a Brittle Ice item.

Method 2: Make Brittle Ice with Blue Ice and water

Required arrangement

You need an existing Blue Ice block and water that flows onto one of its sides. The water must border the Blue Ice horizontally; the documented mechanic is water “flowing onto a Blue Ice block.”

  1. Place a Blue Ice block where you want the conversion to occur.
  2. Arrange a water source or channel so water flows sideways into the Blue Ice.
  3. Let the horizontal water flow contact the Blue Ice.
  4. Check the contacted block for the resulting Brittle Ice.

This is the renewable setup route described for the snapshot. It avoids searching for a naturally generated crevasse, but it still requires access to Blue Ice and water. Silk Touch is relevant when you need to pick up the resulting Brittle Ice, not as a stated prerequisite for the water conversion itself.

Natural generation versus Blue Ice conversion

Acquisition route What you need Where it happens Silk Touch
Ice Cave exploration Access to an Ice Cave and its crevasse features Natural crevasse generation Required to obtain the block as an item
Water conversion Blue Ice and horizontally flowing water At the Blue Ice and water contact Used when collecting the Brittle Ice block

Choose exploration when you are already looking for the new cave content. Choose the conversion method when you have Blue Ice and can control a water channel near your build.

What happens when you stand on Brittle Ice?

It cracks under normal entities

Brittle Ice is intentionally temporary underfoot. When a player or mob steps on it, the block starts cracking and eventually breaks. Standing still is therefore risky, and a path made from Brittle Ice cannot be treated like a permanent bridge for ordinary travel.

Frostbite is the documented exception

The Frostbite mob can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it. This exception does not extend to players or other mobs in the documented behavior, so plan routes around the block’s instability unless Frostbite is the entity using the surface.

Safe handling and building advice

  • Use Silk Touch before mining a natural block you intend to move.
  • Approach crevasse surfaces from a secure side rather than jumping onto Brittle Ice.
  • Do not pause on a placed block; crossing it quickly reduces the chance of being caught when it cracks.
  • Keep a solid backup route beside any Brittle Ice walkway.
  • For controlled production, contain the water flow so it contacts the intended Blue Ice block horizontally.

Snapshot limitations to remember

Because Brittle Ice is documented here as a Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 feature, its presence and behavior should not be assumed in Bedrock Edition or in a different release. Snapshot mechanics can change before a final version, so worlds that depend on this block should be backed up and checked after updates.
