If Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will not launch on PC, first repair its files in the launcher you use: choose Scan and Repair in Battle.net or Verify the integrity of the Game Files in Steam. Then check DirectX and Windows compatibility, close potentially conflicting background programs, and retry. These steps follow Activision’s troubleshooting guidance; none identifies the cause of every launch failure.
1. Repair the game files in your launcher
Start with the repair option for your copy of the game. Activision’s PC troubleshooting guide, dated November 12, 2020, gives these platform-specific steps:

2. Check Windows and DirectX compatibility
Activision says Black Ops Cold War requires a DirectX 12-compatible system. Its troubleshooting page says Windows 8 does not support DirectX 12, and gives Windows 10 version 1803 as the minimum for Windows 10 users. If you are using an older or unsupported Windows version, confirm compatibility before changing advanced settings.

Activision’s minimum and recommended requirements, published August 5, 2021, list the following minimums:
- Windows 10 64-bit, version 1803 or later
- Intel Core i3-4340 or AMD FX-6300 processor
- 8 GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 or GTX 1650, or AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics
- DirectX 12-compatible system, DirectX-compatible sound card, and broadband internet connection
The same 2021 page lists 12 GB RAM and an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X for its recommended medium-settings specification. Those are the published requirements, not a current driver recommendation. Activision describes the specifications as applying to desktop PCs and cautions that laptop graphics models can differ from similarly named desktop cards and may be unsupported.
The page’s storage figures—35 GB for Multiplayer, 82 GB for all game modes, and 125 GB for Ultra Graphics with the optional high-definition asset pack—are release-era figures from 2021. Do not treat them as current free-space requirements.

3. Close background software that may interfere
Activision recommends closing background applications that can disrupt the game or launcher. Its troubleshooting guide specifically names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts. Other overlays, input-remapping tools, and recording software are also reasonable candidates to close while testing, though that does not prove any one application is responsible.
If closing programs does not help, Activision recommends trying a clean boot so Windows starts with only the minimum programs running. Its crashes or game freezes guidance, dated March 5, 2024, warns that third-party applications can disrupt startup even when they are not visibly running when the game is launched.
4. Review security and related software settings
Activision’s November 2020 troubleshooting page recommends adding the entire game folder to your antivirus exception list. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee that antivirus software caused the failure or a universal security recommendation. Only make an exception if you understand the security trade-off and trust the game files.

- If Razer Synapse is installed, Activision advises updating it.
- If ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) was disabled on Windows, Activision advises re-enabling it.
The same support page includes instructions tied to particular antivirus products, but those vendor-specific options may not match current versions. Follow the current documentation for your installed security software rather than assuming an old menu path still applies.
5. Interpret error codes as clues, not diagnoses
Activision’s known-issues page, dated July 7, 2023, lists PC crash or freeze reports involving these codes:
887A00050x0 (0xA2E8EF8F) N0x0 (0x1AEC5F31) N
The page advises using current PC drivers and closing background applications. The listed codes are reports associated with that dated page; they do not establish the cause of your specific failure or show that the reports remain active today. The March 2024 crash article also says PC crashes can occur during launch or in public Multiplayer and recommends checking minimum specifications, closing background apps, and using driver versions shown on Activision’s support page.

6. If the game still will not open
Before contacting Activision support, gather details that help distinguish a file, compatibility, or software-conflict problem:
- Whether you use Battle.net or Steam
- Your Windows version
- Your CPU and graphics card model
- Whether the game process appears in Task Manager after you try to launch it
- Any error message or code shown
- Which repair and troubleshooting steps you have already tried
Activision’s support pages describe general troubleshooting steps, but they do not determine the cause of an individual launch failure. Check Activision’s current support pages for updated guidance and driver information.
