Improve earbuds in this order: reseat them and test different tip sizes, clean the visible mesh, make a small EQ or sound-personalization adjustment, and reduce competing noise before raising playback volume. Only after those checks should you consider compatible replacement tips. The exact controls and accessories depend on the earbud model, phone, operating system, and app, so no single setting improves every pair.

Why earbuds can sound worse without being defective

Earbuds are sensitive to the way they sit in your ear. A small leak around the tip can remove some of the bass you expected, while an earbud with blocked speaker mesh can sound quieter or uneven. The same pair can also seem clearer in a quiet room than on a train because outside noise masks detail.

Sound settings add another variable. Equalization changes the balance of frequencies, but it cannot repair a poor seal, blocked mesh, damaged hardware, or an audio source that is already distorted. Treat EQ as a preference adjustment after the physical checks.

Step 1: Get the fit and seal right

Start with fit because it changes both comfort and what reaches your ears. Google says, in the context of Pixel Buds, “A tight seal improves sound quality and call performance.” A good seal can make bass sound fuller and can reduce the amount of outside sound competing with music or speech.

Try every supplied ear-tip size

  1. Remove the earbuds and inspect the included silicone tips for damage or deformation.
  2. Install one size on both earbuds, insert them gently, and twist or reseat each earbud until it feels stable.
  3. Listen to a familiar track or spoken recording at a comfortable level.
  4. Repeat with the next size. A larger tip may seal a loose ear, while a smaller tip may reduce pressure in a tight ear.
  5. Test each ear separately. Your left and right ear canals do not have to use the same size.

The correct tip should stay in place during normal movement without causing pain, sharp pressure, or a feeling that the ear canal is being forced open. A seal that is technically tight but uncomfortable is not a useful long-term solution.

Use a fit or seal test when the model provides one

Some earbuds and their companion apps offer a fit or seal check. Run it with the earbuds positioned as you normally wear them, then follow the app’s instruction to adjust or change the tip. Treat the result as a guide rather than a medical measurement: comfort and stable placement still matter.

Recognize a fit-related sound problem

  • Weak bass: reseat the earbud and try a larger or differently shaped supplied tip.
  • One side sounds louder: compare the fit in each ear; the ears may need different sizes.
  • Sound changes when you move: the earbud may be shifting and breaking the seal.
  • Pressure or pain: try a smaller tip, a different insertion angle, or a different wearing position rather than forcing a tighter fit.

Do not assume that maximum isolation is always the goal. If you need to hear traffic, announcements, colleagues, or other safety-critical sounds, use the product’s awareness or transparency mode as appropriate.

Step 2: Clean the tips and mesh without damaging the earbuds

Earwax, dust, skin oils, and pocket lint can collect on removable tips and the fine mesh covering the speaker opening. Google warns that “Debris blocking the speaker or microphone meshes can reduce volume and cause audio issues.” This is a likely explanation when an earbud becomes quieter gradually or one side no longer matches the other.

Follow the cleaning method in your earbud maker’s instructions first. Materials, water resistance, coatings, and removable parts differ by model.

A cautious cleaning sequence

  1. Disconnect or power off the earbuds so playback does not start while you are handling them.
  2. Remove the silicone tips if the design allows it. Wash or replace the tips only in the way the manufacturer permits, and let them dry completely before reinstalling.
  3. Hold the earbud with the speaker opening facing downward when practical, so loosened debris is less likely to fall farther inside.
  4. Inspect the visible mesh under good light. If the maker permits it, use a clean, soft, dry brush with light strokes across the surface.
  5. Wipe the exterior with the approved method and confirm that no moisture remains around openings, charging contacts, or microphones.
  6. Reinstall the tips securely and compare left and right volume with the same recording.

What not to do

  • Do not push pins, needles, paper clips, toothpicks, or other sharp objects into the mesh.
  • Do not pour liquid into a speaker or microphone opening.
  • Do not use compressed air unless the manufacturer specifically approves it; pressure can drive debris inward.
  • Do not scrape aggressively. A damaged mesh can create a new audio problem even if the original debris is removed.

If the earbud remains quiet after careful, approved cleaning, stop escalating the cleaning. Persistent imbalance may require the manufacturer’s support or service rather than a stronger tool.

Step 3: Adjust EQ or sound personalization in small increments

Once the fit and mesh are in good condition, use software to match the sound to your preference. EQ can emphasize or reduce frequency ranges; personalization tools may adjust the presentation for supported hearing preferences or content. Neither is a universal repair.

Common sound goals

Goal Adjustment to try What to watch for
More low-end impact A modest bass or “heavy bass” preset Too much bass can mask vocals, cymbals, and detail.
Clearer speech or podcasts A vocal-boost or clarity preset Excess upper-mid emphasis can make voices sound sharp.
Less coloration A balanced or neutral preset “Balanced” is a target preference, not an objective guarantee.
Better access to soft sounds A supported headphone-accommodation or personalization feature Availability and controls depend on the earbud, phone, and operating system.

Pixel Buds EQ controls

For supported Pixel Buds, Google documents presets including balanced, heavy bass, vocal boost, and clarity in its Pixel Buds equalizer (EQ) instructions. The labels and available controls can vary by model and connected device. Change one setting at a time, listen to a familiar track, and compare at the same comfortable volume so a louder result does not automatically seem better.

AirPods sound personalization

Apple documents tone and soft-sound adjustments for supported AirPods through Headphone Accommodations. The feature is not available to every AirPods model or every device combination. If the option is missing, that usually reflects compatibility or software support rather than a setting you have overlooked.

A practical EQ method

  1. Choose a recording you know well, preferably one with vocals, bass, and high-frequency detail.
  2. Set the earbuds to a comfortable level before changing the profile.
  3. Apply one modest preset or personalization change.
  4. Listen for several minutes, then switch back to the original setting.
  5. Keep the setting that improves the specific content you care about without making other material tiring or muddy.

Different apps can apply their own EQ, and some settings affect only particular media or devices. If a change seems to do nothing, check whether the app, phone, and earbuds all support that control and whether another audio effect is overriding it.

Step 4: Reduce competing noise instead of simply turning up the volume

In a noisy environment, the easiest reaction is to raise playback volume. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association notes that noise-canceling earbuds can reduce the urge to turn sound up. Noise cancellation, passive isolation, and awareness modes behave differently depending on the model and surroundings.

Match the mode to the situation

  • Quiet room: use the mode that sounds most natural; strong noise cancellation may not add a benefit.
  • Steady background noise: active noise cancellation may make music or speech easier to follow at a lower level.
  • Traffic, travel announcements, or conversation: use an awareness or transparency mode when you need environmental sounds.
  • Wind or irregular sounds: compare modes, because microphones and processing can react differently to gusts and sudden noise.

A good seal and noise reduction can work together, but neither should be used to isolate yourself from sounds you need to detect. Follow the product’s mode guidance and local safety requirements.

Step 5: Consider replacement tips only when they are compatible

Accessories are conditional, not a guaranteed upgrade. Try the supplied tips first. Replacement silicone or memory-foam tips make sense only when the earbuds have removable tips and the replacement matches the model’s nozzle and retention design.

Option When it may help Compatibility checks Trade-offs
Another supplied silicone size The earbud leaks, slips, or causes pressure. Usually the safest first experiment because it was supplied for the model. May still fail if the earbud shape does not suit your ear.
Model-compatible replacement silicone tips The original tips are worn, lost, or cannot seal comfortably. Confirm the exact earbud model, nozzle dimensions, and attachment method. Fit and sound can differ even between tips sold as compatible.
Compatible memory-foam tips Silicone does not seal comfortably and the earbud design supports foam. Check model support, nozzle size, charging-case clearance, and whether the foam interferes with sensors. Foam can wear out, require more care, and may alter insertion feel.

Google specifically suggests trying memory foam for supported Pixel Buds when the silicone tips do not fit well. That is model guidance, not a claim that foam improves every earbud. A tip that prevents the charging case from closing or blocks a sensor is not a practical solution even if it sounds good initially.

Diagnose the most common symptoms

Both earbuds sound quiet

  1. Check that the source device and the playback app are not set unusually low.
  2. Reseat both earbuds and test another supplied tip size.
  3. Inspect and clean the speaker mesh using the approved method.
  4. Disable or compare any EQ, volume limiter, or sound effect that may be reducing perceived level.
  5. Try another recording or app to determine whether the problem follows the earbuds or the source.

If the problem remains across sources after cleaning and fit checks, consult the model’s support instructions rather than repeatedly increasing volume.

Only one earbud is quiet

Compare the fit and mesh on the quiet side first. A different seal or localized debris can produce an imbalance that is mistaken for an electronic failure. Check whether the phone has a left-right balance control and whether it has been moved away from center. If the imbalance persists with clean mesh, a secure fit, and multiple sources, document the symptom for support.

Bass is weak but voices are audible

This pattern often points to a seal problem. Reseat the earbuds, try another tip size in the affected ear, and use a fit test if available. Only after the seal is stable should you compare a bass EQ preset. EQ cannot recreate bass that is being lost through a physical leak.

Music sounds muddy after an adjustment

Return to the previous profile, then try a smaller change. A bass-heavy setting can cover vocal and instrument detail, while an aggressive clarity setting can become tiring. Keep separate preferences for different content only if your device or app makes that practical; do not keep raising several bands at once.

Calls are poor even when music sounds fine

Check that the earbud microphones are not covered by debris and that the earbuds are seated as intended. Fit guidance for supported Pixel Buds links a tight seal with call performance, but microphone placement and environmental noise also vary by model. Test a short call in a quiet location before changing multiple settings.

Choose the adjustment by the result you want

Your priority Start here Next step Stop if
Fuller bass Improve the seal in each ear. Try a modest bass preset. Bass masks voices or causes fatigue.
Clearer podcasts Clean the mesh and check left-right fit. Try vocal boost or clarity if supported. Speech becomes harsh or unnatural.
More consistent volume Inspect both meshes and compare sources. Check device balance and app effects. One side remains quiet after approved cleaning.
Less outside noise Use the best-fitting supplied tips. Try noise cancellation in an appropriate setting. You need environmental awareness or the mode sounds distracting.
All-day comfort Use the smallest secure tip and adjust insertion. Consider compatible alternatives only if the design supports them. You feel pain, pressure, or irritation.

Protect hearing while pursuing better sound

Better sound should not mean louder sound. Google’s Hearing Wellness guidance says that listening above 80 dB for extended periods can eventually affect hearing. Google presents that figure as general guidance in its supported-device context; it is not a personalized safe-or-unsafe boundary for every person.

Use the lowest level that lets you follow the content, especially when noise cancellation or a better seal makes detail easier to hear. Give your ears breaks during long sessions, and reduce exposure when sound feels uncomfortable, muffled, or fatiguing. If you notice persistent ringing, pain, or a change in hearing, stop treating the earbuds as a settings problem and seek appropriate medical advice.

A maintenance routine that preserves the improvement

  • Store the earbuds in their case instead of loose in a pocket or bag.
  • Inspect tips and visible mesh whenever one side begins to sound different.
  • Clean only with materials and methods the manufacturer approves.
  • Keep a note of the tip size and EQ profile that work for each ear, especially if the ears use different sizes.
  • Recheck fit after replacing tips, updating an app, or changing the device used for playback.
  • Use awareness modes when you need to hear people, vehicles, alarms, or announcements.

The most reliable improvement usually comes from removing a physical problem before adding a software effect: establish a comfortable seal, clear permitted debris, then tune the sound to your preference. If those steps do not resolve a persistent imbalance or distortion, the limitation may be the earbud’s design or a hardware fault rather than a setting you can optimize.
