The most reliable way to improve Google Nano Banana 2.1 images is to give the model a specific job, describe the subject and action in concrete terms, assign every reference image a clear role, and make one focused change per editing turn. Treat the first generation as a draft: lock the composition and identity you need, then refine lighting, text, objects, and styling conversationally.
Nano Banana 2.1 is Google’s current image-generation and conversational-editing model in the API, identified by the model ID gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Google describes improved prompt adherence, text rendering, multi-turn character consistency, and support for up to 14 reference images; those are vendor-stated capabilities rather than independent quality benchmarks. See the official model documentation.
What “better results” means with Nano Banana 2.1
A better result is not merely a more detailed image. It is one that matches the intended subject, action, composition, references, typography, lighting, and format closely enough for its destination. For each generation, judge the output against the parts of your brief that matter most:
- Subject and action: Is the right person, object, or scene doing the requested thing?
- Composition: Are framing, viewpoint, spacing, and focal hierarchy usable?
- Reference fidelity: Does the output preserve the important shape, material, color, or identity cues?
- Text and layout: Are the exact words legible and placed where they belong?
- Style and lighting: Do the visual treatment, mood, and light support the purpose?
- Edit preservation: When you change one element, do the details you wanted to keep remain intact?
These are practical evaluation criteria derived from Google’s prompt and model guidance, not a published benchmark. No official source establishes a percentage improvement from a particular prompt formula, so avoid treating any technique as a guaranteed score increase.

Start with the image’s job
Open with an action verb such as create, generate, or draw. Then state what the image must accomplish. A product hero image, a vertical social post, a concept illustration, and a technical diagram need different framing and information priorities even when they depict the same subject.
Google’s Nano Banana prompt guide recommends concrete descriptions and incremental detail. A short prompt can work when the scene is simple; additional words should reduce ambiguity, not add decoration. Use this working scaffold:
Create an image of a subject performing an action in a location or context. Compose it with specified framing, viewpoint, and layout, lighting and important visual details, and a chosen style. Use a specified aspect ratio and output format.

This is a practical synthesis of Google’s recommendations, not a quoted or tested formula. Replace each bracketed part with information that affects the result.
Build a precise prompt step by step
1. Name the subject and its action
Use nouns and verbs that can be depicted. “A red commuter bicycle leaning against a rain-wet brick wall” gives the model more usable information than “an urban lifestyle image.” If a person is involved, describe pose, clothing, expression, and age range only when those details matter. State the action explicitly: “the cyclist checks a map” is more controllable than “a cyclist in the city.”
2. Add context and relationships
Explain where the subject is and how important elements relate to one another. For example, say that the bicycle is in the foreground, the rider is two steps behind it, and the street recedes toward the upper-right corner. Relationship language helps the model understand which object is in front, beside, inside, or connected to another.
3. Specify composition and viewpoint
Choose a shot type and camera position: close-up, medium shot, wide establishing view, overhead, low angle, eye level, or three-quarter view. Add framing and placement such as “leave negative space on the left for a headline” or “center the package with equal margins.” If the image will be cropped, state the destination aspect ratio rather than hoping a later crop will preserve the subject.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Describe lighting and visual priorities
Identify the light source, direction, softness, color, and mood when they affect the brief: “soft window light from camera left, gentle shadow under the cup, neutral white balance.” Mention only the details that need control. A long list of cinematic adjectives can compete with the subject and composition.

5. Name the style in operational terms
Instead of relying on a broad label such as “beautiful,” describe the visible treatment: editorial product photography, flat two-color screen print, hand-painted gouache, clean isometric diagram, or documentary street photo. Add material and edge qualities when useful, such as “visible paper grain” or “crisp vector-like outlines.”
6. State format and destination
Tell Nano Banana 2.1 whether the output is a vertical social post, widescreen background, square product tile, poster, presentation slide, or infographic. Include the aspect ratio and any safe area needed for later text or cropping. Google’s guidance specifically recommends making aspect ratio and intended format explicit.
7. Add detail incrementally
Generate a clear first version, then add the next highest-priority detail. This makes failures easier to diagnose: if the composition is wrong, fix that before spending words on texture; if the subject is correct but the lighting is wrong, adjust the light without rewriting the entire scene. Google Cloud’s prompting guide recommends this conversational refinement approach.
Use reference images deliberately
A reference image is most useful when the prompt says what it contributes and how it relates to the new scene. Do not simply attach several files and expect the model to infer their priorities. Google’s guidance describes the pattern as references, a relationship instruction, and the new scenario.
Assign one job to each reference
Give references distinct roles, for example:
- Structure reference: supplies the pose, silhouette, floor plan, or overall arrangement.
- Appearance reference: supplies a character’s face, clothing, color palette, or a product’s shape.
- Material reference: supplies fabric weave, metal finish, paper texture, or surface wear.
- Environment reference: supplies the room, landscape, architecture, or time-of-day cues.
- Typography or layout reference: supplies the hierarchy and placement of a poster, label, or diagram.
Then connect the roles to the requested scene: “Use Reference 1 for the chair’s silhouette, Reference 2 for the blue wool texture, and Reference 3 for the studio background. Create a front-facing catalog image that combines those elements without copying the background objects.”
Keep references clear and name recurring subjects
Use sharp, well-lit references with the feature you want preserved visible and unobstructed. For a recurring character or object, assign a stable name such as Mara or Model A, describe the traits to retain, and use the same name in later prompts. Google DeepMind recommends clear references and distinct names for continuity across scenes.
The API model page currently lists support for up to 14 reference images. It also describes character consistency for up to four characters and object fidelity for up to 10 objects in multi-image fusion. These are capability limits stated by Google, not a promise that using the maximum will improve fidelity. Include only the references that resolve an actual ambiguity.

When combining images, specify which elements should coexist and which should not transfer. For example: “Use the person from Reference 1, the jacket material from Reference 2, and the mountain environment from Reference 3; keep the person’s face and jacket color, but do not copy the pose or any text from the references.” This prevents an incidental background detail from becoming an unwanted subject.

Make text and layout explicit
Image models can render text, but exact wording and placement still need unusually clear instructions. Put the required words in quotation marks and describe typography and hierarchy:
Create a vertical event poster. Put the exact headline “NIGHT MARKET” at the top in large bold sans serif capitals. Place “Friday, 18 October” below it in smaller regular text. Keep all lettering inside the safe margins and leave the lower third clear for sponsor logos.
Specify whether text should be centered, left-aligned, arched, stacked, or integrated into a sign. If the image is a diagram or infographic, describe the information hierarchy and visual organization rather than merely listing labels. For example, request a three-step horizontal timeline with numbered circles, short labels beneath each step, and arrows showing direction. Google’s prompt guide recommends requesting structures such as timelines or flowcharts when that is the intended output.

If one word is wrong, ask for a targeted correction instead of regenerating the entire composition. Google says some product surfaces may offer 2K or 4K upscaling controls, but the available controls depend on where you use Gemini.
Edit conversationally, one change at a time
Gemini Apps lets you edit an image generated in Gemini or upload an image to edit. It also supports uploading multiple images to create a composite. The user-facing workflow is documented in Gemini Apps Help.
- Generate a workable base. Prioritize the correct subject, action, framing, and aspect ratio over minor styling.
- Identify one defect. Decide whether the next change concerns the background, an object, lighting, text, color, or pose.
- Name what must stay. Say which details to preserve, such as the subject’s face, camera angle, headline, product shape, or shadow direction.
- Request the focused edit. Use natural language: “Replace the plain wall with a softly blurred bookstore interior; keep the person, pose, crop, clothing, and headline unchanged.”
- Inspect the result. Check both the requested change and possible collateral changes.
- Continue with the next smallest change. If several elements are wrong, fix the one that affects the brief most.
Follow-up prompts are easier to control when they refer to visible elements by name and location. “Make it better” gives no measurable direction; “reduce the glare on the upper-right bottle while preserving the label and reflections on the other bottles” does.
Ask for variations when the direction is uncertain
During exploration, ask for distinct alternatives rather than tiny random changes. Google DeepMind recommends requesting multiple images at once so you can compare creative directions. Treat the outputs as options, not as a guarantee that every variant will share identical layout or quality.

A practical Gemini Apps workflow
Generate from text
- Open Gemini on a supported account and start a new conversation.
- Describe the image’s job, subject, action, context, composition, style, lighting, aspect ratio, and exact text if needed.
- Review the result against the six comparison axes above.
- Use a follow-up prompt for the single most important correction.
Edit an existing image
- Upload the image or select an image generated in Gemini.
- State the edit and list the details that must remain unchanged.
- For a composite, upload each source image and assign a role to each one.
- Check identity, edges, text, shadows, and object interactions after every edit.
Google’s product documentation says access, generation limits, and controls vary by product surface. The Gemini Apps help page also states that image editing is not available to users under 18. Google Photos connected-editing instructions specify users must be 18 or older in the United States and use a personal Google Account, with regional restrictions applying. Using the API: model identity and limits
For API calls, use the current model identifier gemini-nano-banana-2.1 shown in Google’s model documentation. The page was last updated on October 6, 2026 UTC and lists 131,072 input tokens and 32,768 output tokens. Those are API limits, not a recommendation to write extremely long prompts; concise, relevant instructions remain easier to control.
Keep the same prompt principles in code: label each reference, state its role, define the desired output, and preserve required details during edits. Store the name of a recurring character or object in your application so later turns use the same label consistently. Handle model responses as drafts that require visual inspection, especially when text or exact geometry is important.

Create a square studio product photograph of a matte black travel mug standing upright on a pale concrete surface. Show the logo facing the camera, with a three-quarter view and soft window light from the upper left. Keep the background minimal and leave 15 percent empty space above the mug for a headline. Use realistic material texture and natural contact shadow.
Character continuity
Create a cinematic medium shot of Mara, the same woman shown in Reference 1: short dark curly hair, round glasses, olive jacket, and a small scar above her right eyebrow. Mara is repairing a radio at a wooden workbench in a coastal workshop at dawn. Preserve her facial features and clothing; change only the environment and action. Use warm side light and a 16:9 composition.
Multi-reference composite
Use Reference 1 for the red backpack’s shape, Reference 2 for the ripstop fabric texture, and Reference 3 for the alpine trail environment. Create a realistic outdoor advertisement showing the backpack on a rock in the foreground. Keep the backpack’s logo area blank, use morning light, and do not transfer text or people from any reference.
Poster with exact text
Create a vertical concert poster with a dark navy background and neon coral line art of a saxophone. Put the exact headline “RIVER ROOM SESSIONS” at the top in bold condensed sans serif capitals. Place the exact date “18 OCTOBER 2026” below it in smaller text. Keep all lettering sharp, centered, and inside safe margins; leave the bottom 20 percent empty for ticket information.
Focused edit
Keep the subject’s face, pose, clothing, camera angle, crop, and headline unchanged. Replace only the gray background with a softly blurred green garden at golden hour. Match the existing light direction and preserve the subject’s contact shadow.

Troubleshoot common failures
The subject is correct but the composition is wrong
Regenerate with explicit framing, viewpoint, aspect ratio, and placement. State where the focal subject sits and where negative space is needed. Do not add more style adjectives until the layout works.

A reference detail overwhelms the scene
Reassign roles in the prompt and state what not to copy. Reduce the reference set to the images that resolve the current ambiguity. A maximum of 14 references does not mean 14 are desirable.
The character drifts between scenes
Use the same stable name, repeat the defining visual traits, and identify the reference that establishes identity. Keep the number of recurring characters within the model’s described support of up to four when continuity is essential.
Text is misspelled or rearranged
Put exact wording in quotation marks, specify the typographic hierarchy and alignment, and make a targeted text-only correction. If the wording remains unreliable, generate a clean layout with reserved space and add final type in a dedicated design tool.
An edit changes details that should remain
List the preserved details in the same sentence as the requested change. Narrow the edit to one object or region, then compare the result with the previous version. If drift continues, return to the last stable image and make a smaller change.
The output looks generic
Replace abstract adjectives with observable facts: materials, dimensions, camera position, light direction, color relationships, and object placement. Add one concrete detail at a time and remove instructions that do not affect the intended image.
Access, account, and availability checks
Google’s Gemini product information says Nano Banana 2.1 access is provided to Google AI plan users and that paid plans have higher image-generation limits. Exact quotas and controls can change. Availability also depends on the product surface, account type, age, and region. Check the current Gemini image-generation page and the Gemini Apps Help instructions for the account you will use.
Do not assume that a feature visible in the API is available in Gemini Apps, or that an editing control offered in one country appears in another. Treat plan names, limits, and age requirements as time- and region-sensitive product information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Final pre-export checklist
- Does the image perform the job and fit its destination aspect ratio?
- Are the subject, action, viewpoint, and object relationships unambiguous?
- Did each reference have a stated role, with unwanted details excluded?
- Are recurring characters or objects named consistently?
- Is every required word quoted exactly and checked character by character?
- Did the last edit change only the requested element?
- Have you inspected edges, shadows, hands, object counts, and small text at the intended display size?
- Are the account, age, region, plan, and product-surface requirements satisfied?
The highest-control workflow is iterative: establish a clear composition, use references as labeled sources rather than a pile of inspiration, specify text and format, and make narrowly scoped conversational edits. Nano Banana 2.1 can assist with both generation and editing, but the final choice should come from comparing the image with the actual brief, not from assuming that a longer prompt or more references will automatically produce a better result.
