For better iPhone audio, choose settings that suit your music, connection and listening preferences: enable Apple Music Lossless if you want it, use a wired connection for lossless playback, and adjust EQ or accessibility options for the sound you prefer. Lossless does not guarantee an audible improvement for every listener, and Bluetooth playback is not lossless.
Turn on Lossless in Apple Music
On current iPhone guidance, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality, turn on Lossless Audio, then choose quality separately for streaming and downloads. Apple lists Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz. These options apply to Apple Music; available tracks and features vary by country or region.
Lossless preserves the audio data, but Apple says the difference between AAC and lossless is virtually indistinguishable. Treat it as an option if you want the original data preserved and have a compatible listening setup, rather than a guaranteed sound upgrade.
Pick a quality that fits your connection and storage
Higher-quality streams use more network data, and lossless downloads take significantly more storage. Apple also notes that streamed quality depends on the song’s availability, network conditions and the connected headphones or speakers.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- If you have a limited mobile data plan, choose a lower streaming quality for cellular and save higher-quality listening for Wi-Fi.
- If iPhone storage is tight, avoid downloading large lossless libraries; choose a lower download quality or keep fewer albums offline.
- For songs already downloaded before you enabled Lossless, delete the existing download and download the track again to get its lossless version.
Choose a connection that supports your goal
Apple says Bluetooth connections are not lossless. AirPods and most Beats wireless headphones use Apple’s AAC Bluetooth codec, so Bluetooth remains a convenient choice but does not transmit lossless audio. For a lossless route, use wired headphones, a receiver or powered speakers, or the iPhone’s built-in speakers.
Standard Lossless playback does not require an external DAC. On iPhone, Apple says an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is required to play above 48 kHz, which matters if you specifically want Hi-Res Lossless at higher sample rates. Before choosing a wired setup, check that the headphone plug, iPhone connector and any adapter are compatible.
Adjust EQ and volume consistency
In Settings > Apps > Music, use EQ to select an equalization setting that suits your listening preference. EQ changes the tonal balance; it is separate from Lossless, which concerns the audio encoding.
In the same Music settings, turn on Sound Check to normalize volume. It can help keep volume more consistent between tracks, including when Dolby Atmos songs seem quieter than stereo versions.

Try Dolby Atmos if you prefer its presentation
Selected Apple Music songs are available in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and select Automatic, Always On or Off. Apple recommends Always On when using wired headphones. Atmos is a different, content-dependent presentation—not a higher-fidelity replacement for stereo—so choose the setting that sounds best to you. If Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo, Apple recommends enabling Sound Check.
Personalize audio for your headphones or hearing needs
For supported Apple and Beats headphones, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. You can boost selected frequencies or amplify soft sounds, then choose whether the adjustment applies to phone calls, media or both.
Under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual, Mono Audio combines the left and right channels, while the balance slider adjusts the relative volume between them. These controls can help if one channel sounds quieter or if you prefer a combined mono signal.
