To improve at NYT Strands, treat the clue as a hypothesis rather than a definition. Brainstorm a few possible categories, test a word or phrase that could name the category as the spangram, and then search for related theme words by tracing adjacent letters in every direction. Diagonals, bends and turns are legal; a cell cannot be reused within one word. Three valid non-theme words earn a hint that highlights the letters of a theme answer. Finish by auditing every unused tile so the board forms a complete solution.
This method does not require finding the spangram first every time. The spangram is a powerful organizing clue, but a clear theme word can reveal the category when the long word is hard to see.
Know exactly what the board is asking you to do
NYT Strands presents a 6-by-8 grid of letters and a theme clue. There is no printed answer bank. Your job is to find every solution word hidden in the grid, including one special word or phrase called the spangram.
Recommended Free Tools
| Element | Rule or purpose |
|---|---|
| Grid | Six rows by eight columns of letters. |
| Letter path | Letters must be in vertically, horizontally or diagonally adjacent cells. The path may change direction. |
| Cell use | A cell cannot be used twice in one word. It may be available for another word after you finish the first. |
| Theme clue | A short clue points to the relationship shared by the theme words. It may be literal, figurative, pun-based or reference-based. |
| Theme words | The ordinary solution words that fit the clue’s intended category or connection. |
| Spangram | A word or phrase that names or reveals the theme and touches two opposite sides of the grid. |
| Board completion | The solution words partition the board: once all answers are found, the solution accounts for the grid’s letters. |
| Hints | Three valid words outside the solution unlock a hint that highlights the letters of one theme answer. |
The spangram must touch opposite sides, but it does not have to start or finish in a corner. “Opposite sides” means, for example, the top and bottom edges or the left and right edges. Do not reject a plausible spangram merely because its endpoints are not at extreme corners.

Start with the clue, but keep several interpretations alive
The clue is your main source of information, yet its wording is deliberately compact. Read it both literally and figuratively before hunting for letters.
List possible relationships
Write or think through two or three possibilities:
- A category, such as a class of objects, professions, foods or places.
- A phrase or expression in which the answer words commonly appear.
- A pun, double meaning or wordplay connection.
- A cultural, scientific, historical or fictional reference.
- A shared prefix, suffix, sound or spelling pattern.
Do not commit to the first category that comes to mind. If it produces no convincing paths, keep the clue and change the interpretation. A word can be perfectly ordinary and still be wrong if it does not belong to the day’s intended relationship.
Separate a category name from an example
When you imagine likely answers, ask whether each candidate names the whole group or is merely one member of it. The spangram usually expresses the theme at the category level. For example, if you suspect a set of particular objects, the spangram may be the collective label rather than one object in that set. This distinction gives you a better target for a long cross-board path.

If several plausible words cannot be traced with legal adjacency, that is evidence against the interpretation, not proof that the board is impossible. Keep the clue’s wording in view, try a synonym or a different sense, and scan for a shorter theme candidate. One clear answer often exposes the intended category more reliably than forcing a speculative long word.
Find the spangram without treating it as a rule
The spangram is useful because it makes the theme explicit and spans the board. Many players look for it early, and that is a sound heuristic, but it is not a requirement or a guaranteed fastest route. A solve can discover it in the middle or at the end.
Generate a spangram hypothesis
- Translate the clue into a category, phrase or reference.
- List words or phrases that could name that category, not just examples within it.
- Prefer candidates long enough to plausibly cross the grid, while remembering that length alone does not validate a guess.
- Look for the candidate’s letters in connected cells, allowing horizontal, vertical and diagonal moves and any number of turns.
- Check whether one legal path touches two opposite edges. It may touch an edge at an interior cell rather than a corner.
Trace from both edges
Instead of searching the entire grid at random, inspect the top and bottom rows, then the left and right columns, for letters that could begin or finish your category name. Follow promising sequences inward. A path can zigzag, so do not abandon a candidate because it is not straight.
Switch to a theme word when the spangram stalls
After a few reasonable checks, stop investing in a spangram that has no visible route. Search for short, obvious members of your best category. Once two or three members emerge, their shared relationship can suggest a better category label and a more realistic spangram. This is often faster than repeatedly guessing long words from the clue alone.

Confirm the word, not just the route
A connected path that reaches opposite sides is not automatically the spangram. The letters must form a word or phrase that explains the clue. Conversely, a phrase that perfectly describes the clue is not enough if its letters cannot be traced in order without reusing a cell. Both meaning and geometry have to agree.
Build a category checklist for theme words
Once you have a plausible theme, turn it into a finite search list. Mental brainstorming is more effective than scanning every letter combination.
Expand by synonyms and examples
- Write several direct members of the category.
- Add common synonyms, alternate spellings and inflected forms.
- Consider singular and plural versions if the clue permits either.
- List related subtypes, brands only when the clue clearly calls for them, and familiar compounds.
- Include less literal interpretations suggested by a pun or reference.
Use the list as a set of search prompts, not as permission to force a word. Every candidate still has to match the clue and follow a legal path.
Search distinctive letter sequences
Start with unusual clusters, uncommon endings or a distinctive pair of letters rather than the first letter of every candidate. If you are looking for a word with a rare sequence, scan the grid for that sequence and then test neighboring cells around it. Common endings and compounds can help you focus, but they are clues, not rules.

Mark certainty levels
Classify candidates mentally as confirmed, plausible or speculative. Confirmed words fit both the theme and a legal path. Plausible words fit the category but still need a route check. Speculative words are merely associations. Work through confirmed candidates first so an attractive but unsupported guess does not consume your attention.
Trace letters with the full movement rule
Many stalled solves come from searching only in straight lines. Strands paths are continuous chains of adjacent cells and may turn at every step.
What counts as adjacent
- One cell up, down, left or right.
- One cell diagonally up-left, up-right, down-left or down-right.
- A mixture of these moves in any order.
You cannot jump over a cell, skip a letter or reuse the same cell in one word. A diagonal move is legal even when the path then turns horizontally or vertically on the next step.

Trace candidates slowly before committing
- Locate the first letter and identify every adjacent cell that could supply the next letter.
- Follow one branch for two or three letters.
- If it dead-ends, backtrack to the last branch instead of starting over.
- Check that no cell appears twice in the same path.
- Read the completed sequence aloud or in your head and compare it with the clue.
This branch-and-backtrack approach is more reliable than dragging quickly through a visually attractive route. It also helps you notice when a path uses a tile that a different answer needs.
Use the board’s visual geography
For a suspected spangram, begin at edge letters and work toward the center. For ordinary theme words, scan dense unused regions after each confirmed answer. A word that appears impossible from one starting letter may become obvious when you approach it from the other end, because paths can be traced in either direction as long as the resulting letter order is correct.
Use hints as a controlled recovery tool
Strands rewards three valid words that are outside the puzzle’s solution with a hint. The hint highlights the letters of one theme answer. It is not necessary to pretend that using a hint reveals every answer or that hints are always scarce; the supported function is a letter highlight that helps you infer and trace one word.
Earn extra-word progress deliberately
When you are stuck, look for ordinary words that are unrelated to your current theme hypothesis. Trace them legally and submit them. Keep a small mental record so you do not repeatedly test the same sequence. After three valid non-theme words, use the available hint when it will unblock your search.
Turn highlighted letters into an answer
- Inspect all highlighted cells rather than guessing from only the first few.
- Trace the highlighted sequence in the direction that forms a word.
- Check how that word fits the clue and the category you are building.
- Use the newly confirmed category member to search for its peers and revise your spangram hypothesis.
Choose the right moment
Spend a hint when you have exhausted a sensible category checklist, when the remaining region is small but ambiguous, or when one highlighted answer would clarify the theme. If you already have a strong path and only need to verify it, keep searching first; the goal is to use the hint to create information, not to replace all reasoning.

Audit the remaining grid to solve the last words
Completion is a constraint check. When most answers are marked, the unused tiles should form the remaining solution words. Treat those letters as a new, smaller puzzle.
Count and inspect unclaimed cells
Look at the shape of the unused region, its edge letters and any clusters that could support diagonals. Ask which category members from your checklist can be formed entirely from those cells. If the leftovers look fragmented or produce no plausible word, suspect an earlier path rather than immediately inventing a new category.

Revisit the clue’s intended sense
The last answer may use the clue’s pun or secondary meaning, while the first words seemed literal. Compare the remaining letters with synonyms, compounds and related references. A candidate that fits the leftover geometry but not the clue is probably a decoy.
Check every earlier path
- Was a diagonal move overlooked?
- Did a path bend through an adjacent cell you dismissed?
- Did two answers accidentally share a cell in a way the interface does not allow?
- Did an obvious word count as an extra word because it was not actually part of the theme?
- Did you stop one letter early or include a letter out of order?
Correcting one mistaken path often makes several remaining answers visible at once.
Fix the most common sticking points
“I understand the theme, but I cannot see the words.”
Expand the category into concrete examples, synonyms and compounds. Search for distinctive letter sequences and allow diagonal bends. Then inspect unused cells after each confirmed answer instead of repeatedly scanning the full grid.
“I found an obvious word, but it does not count.”
Check two separate conditions: the path must use adjacent letters in order without reusing a cell, and the word must belong to the intended theme. A valid dictionary word can be an extra word rather than a solution word. If it is rejected entirely, retrace the path for a skipped, nonadjacent or repeated cell.
“I cannot find the spangram.”
Try a word or phrase that names the category and test paths connecting opposite edges. If that produces nothing after several plausible candidates, find a clear theme word first. Its relationship to the clue can lead you to the spangram later.
“I am stuck on the final few letters.”
Stop broad searching and treat the unused cells as a constrained subproblem. Reconsider the clue’s intended sense, inspect diagonal connections and undo any path that leaves an implausible remainder. The last word may be less literal than the first ones.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Should I use a hint?”
If three valid non-theme words have unlocked one, use it when a highlighted path will reveal the category or break a deadlock. The hint highlights letters of a theme answer; you still need to identify and trace the word.

Choose tactics according to the board, not a rigid doctrine
| Approach | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Clue-first | When the clue suggests a familiar category or phrase and several likely members come to mind. | A narrow interpretation can make you overlook a pun or secondary meaning. |
| Spangram-first | When a category name is distinctive and edge letters offer a plausible route. | The long word may be hard to see; finding it first is a heuristic, not a guaranteed optimum. |
| Theme-word-first | When a short, obvious candidate is visible even though the category label is unclear. | One example may be misleading until a second member confirms the relationship. |
| Independent solving | When you want to test your interpretation and preserve the challenge. | It can be slower after a false start or an overlooked diagonal. |
| Earned-hint solving | When three extra words are available and a highlighted answer would clarify the board. | You receive letters for one answer, but must still infer its word and theme fit. |
| Straight-line scanning | Useful only as a quick first pass for obvious sequences. | It misses legal turns and diagonals, which are central to the movement rule. |
| Flexible path tracing | Use for serious candidate testing and spangram searches. | More branches require careful backtracking and cell-use checks. |
A repeatable solve sequence
The following routine combines the strongest parts of each tactic while leaving room to change direction.
- Read the clue twice. Note literal, figurative, pun-based and reference-based interpretations.
- Scan the edges. Look for letters that could begin or end a category name touching opposite sides.
- Test one or two spangram candidates. Trace them with diagonals and turns; reject any path that breaks adjacency or repeats a cell.
- Find a clear theme member. If the spangram is elusive, switch to a short candidate that fits the strongest category interpretation.
- Build a checklist. Add examples, synonyms, compounds and less literal members suggested by the clue.
- Trace flexibly. Explore branches, backtrack cleanly and mark confirmed paths mentally or in the interface.
- Use extra words strategically. Three valid non-theme words produce a hint highlighting one theme answer’s letters.
- Audit the remainder. Search the unclaimed tiles, question suspicious earlier paths and verify that the completed solution partitions the board.
Illustrative reasoning without assuming a particular day’s answers
Suppose a clue makes you think of a broad class of objects. Your first impulse is to search for one famous example, but the grid offers no convincing route. Instead, list the category label, a few subtypes and several synonyms. You notice a shorter subtype along a diagonal bend and confirm that it fits the clue. That word narrows the category. A second member appears in a different corner, and together they suggest a more precise phrase that could be the spangram.
You then inspect the two opposite edges for that phrase. One candidate path touches the left and right sides but requires reusing a center cell, so it is invalid. A second route uses a diagonal and two turns without repeating any tile and spells the category phrase. With the spangram confirmed, you return to your checklist and test remaining members. If the final region does not match, you undo the last uncertain answer and examine whether the clue was intended as a pun rather than a literal category.
This example illustrates the important order of decisions: meaning proposes candidates, geometry validates them, and the remaining tiles expose mistakes.
Practice skills that transfer from puzzle to puzzle
Practice edge-to-center tracing
On any board, choose an edge letter and follow possible adjacent paths inward for several moves without trying to solve the clue. This builds comfort with diagonal movement and turns, the two visual features most often missed by straight-line scanning.
Practice category expansion
Take a familiar category and quickly produce direct members, synonyms, compounds and a possible category name. The exercise trains the same mental checklist you need when a clue is intentionally broad.
Practice path auditing
After tracing a word, verify the sequence backward: every pair must touch, no cell may repeat, and the completed word must fit the theme. This habit prevents an attractive but illegal route from contaminating the rest of the solve.
Keep performance claims realistic
There is no established strategy statistic showing that one approach always produces faster solves or higher success rates. Treat clue-first, spangram-first, hints and flexible scanning as practical tactics whose value depends on the specific clue and board, not as guaranteed performance upgrades.
Where to play and verify current interface details
Use the official NYT Games destination for the live puzzle and its current controls. Interface labels, account requirements and archive policies can change, so rely on what the current game displays rather than assuming that a guide written for an earlier interface still matches every button or menu.
Independent explanations can help clarify the movement rule and hint mechanic, but they are not official statements of NYT policy. For the puzzle itself, the board’s acceptance or rejection of a path is the final check.
