You cannot craft a trident in Minecraft Survival. The practical route is to find a drowned that is carrying one, defeat it, and repeat the hunt until the weapon drops. Once you have a trident, you can use it as a close-range weapon or charge and throw it. Enchantments then specialize it for returning throws, water-based movement, aquatic combat, thunderstorms, or durability.
What a trident does
A trident fills two roles. At close range, you swing it like a sword. At distance, you hold the use button to charge the weapon, release to throw it, and retrieve it when the retrieval conditions for that throw are met. The weapon is especially suited to underwater play; Minecraft developer Jens Bergensten described it as “a weapon that is intended to be used underwater.”
That versatility makes the trident different from an ordinary melee weapon. Your ideal enchantment depends on whether you want a dependable ranged attack, fast movement through water and rain, extra damage against aquatic or wet targets, thunderstorm utility, or a longer service life.
How to get a trident in Survival
There is no crafting recipe for a trident. Mojang’s guidance is direct: “There’s only one way to get one — defeating a drowned.” In practice, that means finding drowned in oceans or rivers, identifying the ones holding tridents, and killing them until one drops the weapon.

Step 1: Search valid spawning areas
Look in ocean and river biomes where drowned naturally spawn. A normal exploration trip can produce attempts, but the process is random: most drowned do not provide a trident, and only a drowned carrying one is relevant to your hunt.
Step 2: Identify a trident-bearing drowned
A drowned holding a trident is visibly different from one using only its hands or another item. Keep your distance until you know which attack it is using; a trident-bearing drowned can throw its own weapon.
Step 3: Kill the carrier safely
Use terrain, a shield, ranged attacks, or controlled melee spacing to avoid being hit by the drowned’s thrown trident. A Looting sword is useful when you have one because it improves your chances of getting drops, but the exact incremental effect depends on the Minecraft version. Do not treat any fixed “one trident every” time estimate as guaranteed.
Step 4: Repeat the attempt
Finding a carrier does not make a drop certain. Continue searching and defeating carriers, or move to a farm that creates a steady stream of drowned. The practical advantage of a farm is more attempts per hour, not a promise that any individual drowned will drop a trident.
How rare are tridents in Java and Bedrock?
Edition matters, and published figures use different denominators. Mojang’s Bedrock-focused guidance gives an approximate rate of one trident per 188 drowned. A separate 2025 reference snapshot reports an 8.5% drop chance from a trident-bearing drowned in Java Edition and 25% in Bedrock Edition. Those numbers describe different parts of the process and should not be combined into one universal probability.

Version changes, edition rules, and differences in how a source defines “chance” can change the practical result. Use the edition and game version shown on your world when planning a farm, and judge progress by the number of attempts rather than by a fixed countdown.

How to improve your chances without a farm
Use Looting when available
A Looting sword can improve drop prospects while you clear drowned. Because the exact effect is version-dependent, it is safer to describe Looting as an advantage rather than quote a guaranteed percentage or completion time.
Increase encounters, not risk
Search areas where drowned are easy to see and reach. Keep an escape route, light or otherwise secure nearby land, and avoid fighting several carriers in open water if you cannot control their attack angles. The goal is to maximize completed kills while preserving your equipment.
Track attempts realistically
Long dry spells are normal for a rare drop. A run with no trident does not prove that your world is broken. If manual hunting becomes inefficient, switch to a repeatable drowned farm rather than assuming the next few kills must succeed.
Building or using a drowned farm
A farm turns natural drowned spawning into repeated attempts. The Minecraft Wiki documents aerial designs for both Java and Bedrock that move naturally spawned drowned to a killing area. The design described in that reference uses four functional parts:

- An aerial spawning platform: a raised area where drowned can spawn under the design’s conditions.
- Flowing water: water moves spawned drowned toward the collection route.
- A drop shaft: the mobs fall to a lower level, separating spawning from the player’s combat position.
- A player-kill area: you finish the drowned yourself so drops are collected and the farm produces more attempts.
Why a farm helps
The farm does not change a trident’s underlying rarity. It concentrates spawning and transport so you can process more drowned than a casual ocean search. Because the cited design works in both editions, the concept transfers between Java and Bedrock, although construction details and spawning behavior should be checked against the edition and version of your world.
How to operate one
- Build or follow an aerial drowned-farm design appropriate to your edition.
- Confirm that naturally spawned drowned are entering the water channels rather than getting stranded on the platform.
- Stand in the designated killing area and defeat the arriving mobs.
- Use Looting if your design lets you make the final kill with a sword.
- Collect drops, repair or replace equipment as needed, and continue operating the farm for more attempts.
A farm is most useful when you want a trident reliably enough to justify construction time, or when you need several attempts after losing or wearing out earlier weapons.

Important difference: a drowned’s trident is not your thrown trident
Do not assume that every trident you see thrown can be picked up. Mojang’s guide distinguishes between tridents thrown by drowned and tridents thrown by the player. A drowned-thrown trident is not automatically recoverable as an item. The retrieval behavior described for your own weapon applies to a trident you have thrown, not to every projectile launched by an enemy.
This distinction explains many apparent “lost trident” incidents. If an enemy throws at you, concentrate on avoiding the attack; do not plan your equipment around collecting that projectile afterward.
How to use a trident
Melee attacks
At close range, swing the trident like a sword. This is the simplest use and does not require a charge-up. It is useful when an enemy is already within reach or when throwing would be unsafe in a confined space.
Charged throws
- Equip the trident in the appropriate hand.
- Hold the use button to pull the weapon back and charge the throw.
- Release the button to launch it at the target.
- Retrieve the trident after it lands when the weapon and enchantment conditions allow retrieval.
Throwing gives you reach and lets you attack from outside an enemy’s immediate melee range. It also creates a retrieval problem, which is why Loyalty is the general-purpose enchantment for players who throw often.
Underwater fighting
Water is the trident’s natural environment. It remains useful for melee and throwing where ordinary ranged weapons can be awkward, and several of its enchantments are specifically designed around water, rain, or aquatic targets.

Loyalty: the practical choice for repeated throws
Loyalty makes a thrown trident return to you after a short delay. Choose it when you want normal ranged use without repeatedly swimming or walking to the landing point. For general exploration and combat, Loyalty is usually the most convenient specialization because it addresses the weapon’s main logistical problem: retrieval.

Riptide: movement through water or rain
Riptide propels the player through water or rain. It is a movement tool as much as an attack option: charge the trident while the required wet conditions are present, then use it to launch yourself. Choose Riptide for ocean travel, rapid repositioning, or rain-powered movement rather than for a conventional returning projectile.
Impaling: aquatic and wet-target damage
Impaling improves damage in the aquatic or wet situations covered by the player’s edition. It is the targeted combat choice when your enemies and battlefield consistently meet those conditions. Because the exact set of affected targets can differ by edition, check the rules for the edition and version you play instead of assuming that every land mob receives the same bonus.
Channeling: lightning during thunderstorms
Channeling can call lightning when the thrown trident hits a mob during a thunderstorm. It is a weather-dependent utility enchantment, not a replacement for ordinary ranged damage. For it to do its special work, you need a thunderstorm, a valid mob target, and a successful hit.

Unbreaking and Mending: longer service life
Unbreaking and Mending are general durability choices. Unbreaking helps a trident last longer before its durability is exhausted, while Mending supports continued use when the game supplies the experience needed to repair the item. Add durability-focused enchantments when replacing the weapon would be more troublesome than specializing it for a particular attack style.

Common problems and fixes
“I have killed many drowned and still have no trident.”
That can be normal. The item is rare, and published rates differ by edition and by whether the figure counts all drowned or only trident-bearing carriers. Increase the number of encounters, use Looting where appropriate, or move to a drowned farm.

Enemy-thrown and player-thrown tridents are treated differently. The fact that a drowned can throw one does not mean that projectile becomes your item.
“My Riptide trident does nothing.”
Riptide requires water or rain for its movement effect. Test it while standing in water or during rain rather than on dry ground under clear weather.
“Channeling is not producing lightning.”
Channeling’s special effect requires a thunderstorm and a thrown trident that hits a mob. A normal throw in clear weather will not satisfy those conditions.
“Impaling does not always deal extra damage.”
Impaling is conditional. Confirm that the target and wet or aquatic situation match the rules for your edition and version before judging the enchantment.

Add Unbreaking and Mending when possible, and reserve the weapon’s specialized use for situations where its strengths matter. A farm can provide more attempts for a replacement, but durability enchantments reduce how often replacement is necessary.
