You can download and play Steam free-to-play games without a credit card, Steam Wallet funds, or a subscription. Create or sign in to a Steam account, find a free-to-play game in the Store, then install it from your Library.
What “free” means on Steam
Steam defines free-to-play games as free to download and play. A purchase is not required to play or progress, although a game may offer optional in-game items or other content. The Store’s selection changes, so confirm a game’s current status and conditions on its Steam Store page.

Create or sign in to your Steam account
You need a Steam account to use the Store and Library. Steam lets you create one through its website or the Steam application. Follow Steam’s account-creation instructions, then sign in to the Steam client or website.

Find and add a free-to-play game

Open the Steam Store and browse the Free to Play section, or search for a specific title.

Open the game’s Store page. Check that it is currently marked free to play, and review its platform support and any game-specific conditions.

Open Library in Steam. Select the game and double-click its title to install and run it, as described in Steam’s new-user instructions.

What to check before installing

System requirements and storage: These depend on the game. Check the individual Store page and make sure your device has the required hardware and available space.

Optional purchases: Free-to-play does not mean every item or piece of content is free. Review the game page and in-game purchase details if you want to know what is optional.

Account features: Steam classifies accounts with no purchased game and no funded Steam Wallet as Limited User accounts. Some Steam community features may be restricted, and individual games can impose their own limits. That does not mean you need to buy a game or add Wallet funds to download or play a free-to-play title.

If the game does not install or launch

Confirm that the game is still listed as free to play on its current Store page and that you are signed in to the account you used to add it.
