You can turn a GitHub repository into a visual architecture overview by pasting its URL into GitDiagram or changing github.com to gitdiagram.com in the URL. The service generates an interactive map with links back to repository files and folders, plus PNG and Mermaid export options. Treat it as a starting point—not a complete dependency graph—and check important details in the code.
How do I get an architecture diagram of a GitHub repository?
- Open the repository in GitDiagram. Enter its GitHub URL or an
owner/reponame. Alternatively, replacegithub.comwithgitdiagram.comin the URL. GitDiagram’s guide says repository file, branch, issue, and pull request URLs also open the repository diagram. See GitDiagram’s guide. - Wait for the diagram. If a stored diagram exists, it may open immediately. Otherwise, GitDiagram estimates that a new one is usually produced in about a minute; that is the service’s estimate, not an independently measured result.
- Explore the map. Zoom to inspect areas and select labeled components to open the linked GitHub file or folder.
- Export what you need. Export a PNG for an image, or copy the Mermaid source if you want editable diagram text for documentation. The project README describes the result as an interactive architecture diagram. Read the GitDiagram project README.
- Check the source before relying on it. Confirm key component names and connections in the repository, and regenerate the diagram if the code has materially changed since it was created.
What does the generated picture include—and leave out?
According to GitDiagram’s guide, the generator reads the repository’s file tree, README, and up to 12 source files. It produces an architecture explanation and a flowchart with no more than 34 components, grouped into areas and connected by labeled paths. The guide says it checks graph paths against the repository before producing the Mermaid flowchart. These are vendor descriptions of the process, not an independent assessment of completeness or accuracy.
The diagram is a high-level orientation aid, not an exhaustive inventory of modules, imports, or dependencies. GitDiagram says it may simplify or omit parts of a repository and reflects the code state at the time of generation. Do not use it as sole evidence for exact callers, all imports, security findings, or a complete architecture description. Verify those questions in code or with tools designed for them.

| Your need | Suitable route | What it shows or misses |
|---|---|---|
| A shareable whole-repository overview without local setup | GitDiagram | It samples files and limits graph size, so verify important details in code. |
| Multi-page project explanations and chat | DeepWiki | GitDiagram’s guide describes it as a generated wiki with diagrams and chat. |
| A focused view of a feature, request path, private code, or uncommitted changes | A coding agent working in a local checkout | It can inspect the local checkout and draw a view tailored to the question. |
| More exact module or import relationships | An IDE or language-specific dependency tool | GitDiagram’s guide names JetBrains IDEs, madge for JavaScript, and pydeps for Python; exhaustive import graphs can become difficult to read. |
| Declared packages, versions, licenses, dependents, and known vulnerabilities | GitHub dependency graph | It summarizes manifest, lock-file, and submitted dependency data rather than mapping the full application architecture. GitHub explains the dependency graph. |
| Repository activity, contributors, traffic, commits, or fork network | GitHub repository graphs | Available graphs depend on plan and repository visibility. Contributor, commit, and code-frequency insights are limited to repositories with fewer than 10,000 commits. See GitHub’s repository graphs documentation. |
Can you diagram a private GitHub repository?
GitDiagram’s guide says private-repository access requires a fine-grained GitHub personal access token with read access to the repository. The service says the token stays in a secure browser cookie, is sent only with your requests, and is not saved on its servers; it also says private diagrams are stored separately and accessible only with that token. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its handling practices. Before granting access to sensitive code, read its privacy policy and follow your organization’s rules for third-party services and credentials.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What does GitDiagram cost?
GitDiagram says opening stored diagrams is free and creating new diagrams is free within a daily limit. Its guide says that after the limit, users can add a personal OpenAI API key. The guide also describes daily limits for free videos and a $3 price for a video after the limit; the project README says new videos are in early access while existing videos can be watched. Limits, pricing, and availability can change, so check the current product information before relying on them. GitDiagram’s guide and project README describe these details.
When should you use GitHub’s built-in graphs instead?
For repository activity and network information
GitHub’s repository graphs show activity and network-related information, not a generated map of how an application’s components fit together. GitHub’s documentation says certain graphs are public-repository features on GitHub Free, while all repository graphs are available for public and private repositories on Pro, Team, and Enterprise Cloud. Plan rules can change; confirm current details on GitHub’s plans page before making a purchasing decision.

For package inventory and supply-chain questions
GitHub’s dependency graph identifies dependencies from supported manifests and lockfiles, along with submitted dependency data. It can show versions, licenses, manifest sources, vulnerability information, and supported transitive paths. Public repositories can show dependents; private repositories do not report that list. This is useful for understanding package supply chains, but it does not replace an application architecture diagram.

CodeBoarding documents a CLI, browser platform, VS Code and Open VSX extensions, and a GitHub Action. Its repository lists support for Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, Go, PHP, Rust, and C#. It says public maps require a committed .codeboarding/analysis.json at the selected branch or commit. The project also says telemetry is on by default and records command, success or failure, duration, token cost, repository size and languages, and account; it says it does not collect source code, file names, repository names, paths, prompts, model outputs, or API keys. Check its current documentation and configuration before using it, particularly if repository data is sensitive. See CodeBoarding’s repository documentation.
