If an AI answer stops mid-sentence, first find out whether it hit a technical limit, followed a stop instruction, or simply ended its response. The right fix depends on the cause: API users may be able to adjust generation settings, while people using a chatbot usually need to clarify the requested output or continue from the partial answer. These six steps help you diagnose the stop and recover the work without assuming any one prompt trick can prevent every cutoff.
1. Find out why the response stopped
A reply that looks unfinished does not always have the same cause. If you are using an API, inspect the response’s completion or stop reason before changing the prompt. Anthropic documents several distinct outcomes: max_tokens means the configured response limit was reached; stop_sequence means a specified sequence ended generation; end_turn indicates a natural end to the assistant turn; and tool-use or context-window conditions have their own meanings. See Anthropic’s stop-reason documentation.
OpenAI also documents incomplete responses when output limits are reached, including cases where reasoning tokens use part of the available budget. See OpenAI’s reasoning-model guidance. The signal matters: increasing an output cap will not fix an intentional stop sequence, and a tool handoff is not the same as an answer that was cut off.
Consumer chat interfaces may not expose a technical stop reason or let you change API parameters. If the interface shows an explicit continuation option, try it; otherwise, use the later steps to clarify the deliverable or request the missing portion.

2. Increase the output allowance only when it is the bottleneck
For API users, a configured output maximum can impose a hard cutoff. OpenAI describes max_completion_tokens as a hard cutoff, and Anthropic says a max_tokens stop means the response reached its configured limit. If the stop signal confirms this is what happened, raise the applicable setting enough to accommodate the requested result. Exact parameter names and limits depend on the provider and model, so check the current documentation for the one you are using.
A higher output cap gives the model room to produce more; it does not require the model to use all of it. It also cannot override a different stop condition or make an oversized request fit within the model’s total context capacity.

3. Budget for the entire request, not just the visible answer
Long code files, multi-part essays, and email packages with several drafts can need substantial output space. But the total context is also used by the prompt and conversation, and some models count reasoning tokens toward their limits. That leaves less room for visible output than the output cap alone may suggest. OpenAI explains context accounting in its conversation-state documentation and discusses reasoning-token use in its reasoning-model guidance.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor an API request, consider the full exchange: prior messages, instructions, supplied source material, and the artifact you want back. If everything will not fit, reduce unnecessary context or split the task into coherent parts. There is no universal token number that guarantees completion across models and products.

4. Define what a finished deliverable looks like
Vague requests such as “write a short email” leave the model to guess how much to produce and what to include. Specify the audience, purpose, required content, and shape instead. For example, ask for a subject line and a three-paragraph email, or for a complete function followed by a short explanation and one test case.
OpenAI’s prompt guidance illustrates this kind of precision with: “Use a 3 to 5 sentence paragraph to describe this product.” That is an example of a clear output shape, not a universally correct length. See OpenAI’s prompt-engineering guidance.

- For code: name the language, the file or function to produce, required inputs and outputs, and whether you need tests or explanation.
- For email: identify the recipient, purpose, key points, and whether you want a subject line or sign-off.
- For an essay: state the audience, thesis or question, required sections, and desired length or format.
5. Tell the model how to finish, not only what to avoid
“Don’t stop early” describes a failure to avoid, but not the complete task. Say what the response should contain and how it should end. For example: “Include the introduction, all three requested sections, and a conclusion. End with a brief checklist confirming each section is present.” This makes the target easier to follow, but it cannot lift a technical output or context limit.

6. Continue from the partial answer with its original context
If the response has already stopped, do not ask for an unrelated rewrite if you want a seamless continuation. Include the original prompt and the partial response, then identify where the unfinished work begins and what remains. Anthropic’s consumer help page recommends giving Claude the previous prompt and response when asking it to pick up where it left off. See Anthropic’s help article, dated March 16, 2026.
- Provide the original request and the answer up to the cutoff.
- Ask the model to continue from the final complete point, without repeating completed sections.
- Name any remaining components, such as the rest of the function, the closing paragraph, or the final email draft.
- Review the combined result for duplicated passages, missing pieces, broken code, and contradictions.
Continuation can recover unfinished work, but the combined artifact still needs a check before you use it. For consumer chatbots, prompting and continuing are practical options; controls such as output-token limits are generally API-level settings and may not be available in the chat interface.
