In the Mounts of Mayhem release, you can obtain a zombie horse legitimately in Survival on both Java and Bedrock Edition. Search at night in a dark area, find one being ridden by a spear-wielding zombie, remove the rider, tame the now-riderless horse like a normal horse, then equip a saddle so you can control it. Zombie horses burn in sunlight, so add horse armor and keep the animal under cover until you do.
What changed in Mounts of Mayhem
Older Minecraft guides often say that zombie horses are command-only or unavailable in ordinary Survival. That advice is outdated for the Mounts of Mayhem era. Mojang’s official announcement adds zombie horses as natural Survival encounters, and the Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes document their taming and riding behavior.
The release applies to both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. You therefore do not need a command, a map editor, or a special world type to find one in a current Survival world. You do need a version that includes Mounts of Mayhem.
Prepare before you go looking
Update the game first
Use the latest available Minecraft update for your edition. Minecraft’s official FAQ recommends updating before playing, and the natural-spawn behavior described here is tied to Mounts of Mayhem and the Java 1.21.11-era documentation. If your world is running an older release, a guide written for that version may accurately say that zombie horses cannot be found naturally.

Plan for a night search
Natural encounters are tied to darkness. Set up near a safe shelter and begin your search after nightfall, concentrating on genuinely dark terrain rather than brightly lit areas. The Java 1.21.11 notes identify plains and savanna biomes as places where the encounter can occur.
Bring a way to protect the horse from daylight
A zombie horse takes damage from sunlight. Before you leave the area with it, have access to a roof, cave, or other shade where it can wait. Your longer-term goal is horse armor, which protects a zombie horse from sunlight damage.

Taming alone is not enough for practical riding. A tamed zombie horse needs a saddle before you can mount and control it, so keep one available before starting a search if possible.
Step-by-step: get a zombie horse in Survival
- Confirm a current release. Make sure the world is running a Mounts of Mayhem version on Java or Bedrock. If you are unsure, update the game before searching.
- Search after dark. Move through dark areas at night. On Java, the documented locations include plains and savanna biomes.
- Identify the encounter. Look for a zombie riding a zombie horse, commonly with an iron spear. The zombie is the hostile threat; the horse itself is not hostile toward players.
- Remove the rider. Defeat the zombie or otherwise unseat it, following the official instruction to unseat the rider. Keep your attention on the horse after the rider is gone, because the riderless animal does not attack you.
- Tame the riderless horse. Use the same taming routine you use for a regular horse in your edition. The Java 1.21.11 release notes explicitly state that zombie horses can be tamed in the same fashion as regular horses.
- Equip a saddle. Once tamed, place a saddle on the horse. This is what lets a player mount and control it for normal travel.
- Move it into shade. Do not leave the newly acquired horse exposed when morning arrives. Sunlight damages zombie horses, so lead or ride it under cover while you arrange armor.
- Equip horse armor. Put horse armor on the zombie horse to protect it from sunlight damage. Armor is the reliable way to keep it outdoors during the day.
- Make it persistent. Interact with the horse after securing it. Zombie horses can despawn like hostile mobs, but they become persistent when a player interacts with them. Do this before traveling away from the encounter site.
Where zombie horses spawn
Darkness is the key condition
The official Java notes tie their natural appearance to darkness. Searching only in daylight, or restricting your search to heavily lit locations, removes the condition under which the documented encounter occurs. Nighttime is the practical search window, although a dark covered area can also satisfy the darkness requirement.

Plains and savanna are documented Java locations
Java Edition 1.21.11 documentation names plains and savanna biomes and describes the zombie horse appearing with a zombie rider carrying an iron spear. Treat those as the confirmed Java search targets rather than assuming every biome has the same behavior.
There is no published spawn-rate promise
The official material does not publish a percentage chance, a fixed number of nights, or a guaranteed distance for finding one. A long search does not mean your world is broken; it means the encounter is not guaranteed on a schedule stated by Mojang.

Both editions support the Mounts of Mayhem addition, but the cited documentation is more specific for Java. The table separates what is confirmed for each edition from details that are only explicitly documented in the Java notes.

Taming and equipment are described as horse behavior rather than as a Java-only feature: tame the riderless animal as you would a regular horse, then use a saddle to mount and control it. The documented sources do not establish that command syntax is identical between editions, so a command-based workaround should not be assumed to transfer from Java to Bedrock.

Understanding the rider and the horse
The rider is the dangerous part
The spear-wielding zombie is the hostile mob you must deal with. Once it has been removed, the horse is passive toward players. This distinction matters when you are trying to secure the animal: you can focus on separating the rider without treating the horse as another enemy.
Taming does not automatically solve daylight
Ownership and survival are separate problems. A horse can be tamed and saddled yet still take sunlight damage. Keep it under a roof or in another dark enclosure until horse armor is equipped.

Health and movement vary
Java Edition 1.21.11 lists 25 health points, equal to 12.5 hearts. Movement speed and jump strength are variable and are set when the individual horse spawns, so two zombie horses can perform differently even when obtained in the same way.
Persistence: prevent the horse from disappearing
Zombie horses retain hostile-mob despawn behavior until a player interaction makes them persistent. After the rider is gone and the horse is safe enough to approach, interact with it rather than leaving immediately to fetch supplies. Then move it into a protected pen or shaded shelter, tame it, saddle it, and armor it.

If you discover that the horse is gone after traveling away, the likely failure is that it was never made persistent or was left exposed to sunlight. The game does not publish a separate guaranteed timer that tells you exactly how long an untouched zombie horse will remain.

Troubleshooting common problems
“I only find ordinary zombies.”
Check the two conditions documented for the encounter: search at night in darkness and, on Java, concentrate on plains or savanna. The zombie horse is an uncommon-looking combination because the zombie is mounted; scan above ground rather than checking only isolated mobs.
“The horse disappeared after I found it.”
Interact with the animal as soon as you can do so safely. Until a player interaction makes it persistent, it can despawn like a hostile mob. Moving it into a shelter also prevents sunlight from becoming the next problem.
“My tamed horse will not work as a mount.”
Check the saddle. A tamed zombie horse can be mounted and controlled after a saddle is equipped; taming by itself is not the complete riding setup.

“It catches fire in the morning.”
That behavior is expected. Zombie horses burn in sunlight. Put the animal under cover immediately and equip horse armor, which protects it from sunlight damage.
“An old guide tells me I need commands.”
That advice belongs to versions before natural Survival spawning was added. For Mounts of Mayhem, start with a current Java or Bedrock Survival world and use the nighttime search method instead. Command syntax should not be presumed identical across editions.
“I cannot find a published spawn percentage.”
There is no official spawn percentage or guaranteed search duration in the cited release material. Plan for repeated night searches rather than treating a specific number of attempts as a promise.
