Start with the game’s own Steam Store requirements, then reduce background load, check available memory and drivers, and lower demanding graphics settings. Use Steam’s in-game performance monitor to see what is happening while you play. These steps can improve smoothness, but there is no universal FPS gain—and if your PC is below the game’s requirements, settings changes may not overcome its hardware limits.
Check whether your PC can run the specific game
Open the game’s Steam Store page and compare its listed operating system, processor, memory, and graphics requirements with your computer. A generic “low-end PC” label is less useful than this game-by-game check. Steam cautions that meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee high frame rates; systems close to the minimum may still encounter performance or launch problems. Later game updates can also add features or visual detail that affect older hardware. Steam Support: Performance Issues
Try the easiest, reversible changes first
Close unnecessary apps
Before launching the game, close applications and startup programs you do not need. Background software can compete with a game for system resources, so this is a sensible first check before changing graphics settings.

Steam’s general Task Manager guidance suggests aiming for at least 1,000 MB of available RAM, with 2,000 MB or more safer. These are troubleshooting heuristics, not a game requirement or a guarantee of smooth play. When free memory is low, the computer may swap data to disk, which can contribute to repeated frame-rate hitches. Check available memory while the game is affected, and close unneeded apps if memory pressure is high. Steam Support: Performance Issues
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Update component drivers
Check for current CPU, graphics, and audio drivers using the instructions from your PC maker or the component manufacturer. Steam notes that outdated drivers may prevent hardware from using its capabilities fully. Prefer official update channels rather than third-party driver-download sites. Lower graphics demand without guessing at one “best” preset
Higher resolution and video settings that exceed what the hardware can handle can reduce FPS. Lower the resolution or a demanding graphics option, then play long enough to judge whether smoothness improves and whether the image-quality trade-off is acceptable. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped. Exact controls and their effects vary by game; Steam does not establish a universal best configuration for third-party titles.

- A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
If the PC uses integrated graphics
Integrated graphics are less powerful than a dedicated graphics card. Steam suggests trying low shader detail and windowed mode as starting points. Not every game offers those controls, and neither change guarantees smoother play. Steam Support: Integrated Graphics
Observe FPS and system load while the problem occurs
Steam’s in-game overlay performance monitor can display FPS, CPU and GPU performance, and system RAM information. Turn it on in Steam’s settings and check the readings during the part of the game that stutters or feels slow. These metrics can help you notice which resources appear heavily loaded, but one reading is not a universal bottleneck test. Steam Support: In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor

Verify game files for missing content or crashes
File verification is useful when a game has missing assets or crashes; it is not a general FPS-boost setting. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. The check can take several minutes. Steam notes that some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Do not verify files while other system-intensive work is running, or verify several games at once. Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files
Use launch options only when they apply to the game
Launch options can override a game’s settings, but Steam’s commonly discussed performance options apply to Valve Source and GoldSrc games—not most third-party titles. Do not paste generic flags into every game. For a supported Valve title, Steam documents -autoconfig as a way to restore detected video and performance defaults; remove the option after the reset. If a third-party game has a launch or setting problem, consult that game’s developer support. Steam Support: Launch Options Steam Support: Performance Issues

Know when settings are not enough
If the computer does not meet the game’s requirements, reducing background load and graphics demand may help, but the hardware can remain the limiting factor. Steam identifies a video-card or memory upgrade as possible ways to improve performance when a system falls short. The right upgrade cannot be determined without the PC model, existing components, compatibility, upgradeability, budget, and the game’s demands. A memory upgrade will not fix every processor or graphics bottleneck. For a laptop, verify that its memory can be upgraded and that any replacement is compatible before buying.
