To unlock a carrier-restricted Samsung Galaxy, request an unlock from the carrier or retailer that originally supplied the phone. Samsung does not issue a universal carrier unlock code or set one eligibility policy for every carrier. The original provider checks whether the phone qualifies and tells you whether to enter a code, use an on-device setting, or wait for an automatic unlock.
First, identify which lock the phone is asking about
The exact wording on the screen determines who can help. Samsung UK says it does not lock its devices to a particular network, while explaining that a network restriction may be applied by the original provider or retailer. Samsung UK Support explains the difference between SIM and network locks.
- Network unlock code or network lock: The phone is restricted to its original carrier. Contact that carrier or the retailer that supplied it.
- SIM PIN or PUK: These protect or unblock the SIM card; they do not remove a carrier restriction. Contact the SIM provider or follow its SIM-security process.
- Phone screen PIN, password, or pattern: This controls access to the handset itself, not the carrier network.
- Regional lock: This is a separate restriction from a carrier network lock. Samsung discusses regional locks separately in its support guidance.
How to request the network unlock
- Find the original provider. Check the purchase receipt, packaging, account records, or carrier identification information. If you are unsure, Samsung’s US guidance on moving a Galaxy to another carrier explains that carrier-identification details can help.
- Get the IMEI. On many Galaxy phones, open Settings and go to About phone or Status, then IMEI Information. Menu wording can vary by model and software. Samsung says the IMEI is useful when requesting an unlock. Give it only through the carrier’s official support channel; do not post it publicly. See Samsung Gulf’s network-lock guidance.
- Ask the original carrier to check eligibility. Have the account and device details ready. Requirements may involve account standing, a contract, or an outstanding device balance, but they differ by carrier and location. Samsung describes account and payment checks as examples, not universal rules. AT&T, for example, says an installment balance must be paid off under its own policy; that requirement should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. See AT&T’s device-unlock requirements.
- Follow the carrier’s instructions for that model. If a code is required, the carrier will explain when and how to enter it. Other supported devices may use a setting or carrier app, or unlock automatically once eligible. T-Mobile documents an on-device Device Unlock route for supported phones, while AT&T describes automatic unlocking for some eligible devices. See T-Mobile’s device-unlock instructions and AT&T’s requirements above.
- Test the phone with the new service. Follow the carrier’s setup instructions with an activated SIM or other supported service method. An unlocked phone is not guaranteed to support every feature or network band offered by the new carrier.
Why there is no single code or universal process
The original provider controls its eligibility checks and unlock method; Samsung does not set a common policy across carriers. One carrier may require a manually entered code, another may provide an on-device option, and some eligible phones may unlock automatically. Fees, wait times, proof-of-ownership rules, and payment conditions depend on the provider, country, account, and device. Ask the original carrier for its current terms rather than relying on a general fee or timeline.

If the unlock does not work
The carrier says the phone is not eligible
Ask which specific condition remains unmet, such as a balance or account requirement, and what action or documentation is needed. Eligibility rules belong to the original provider; Samsung lists account standing and payoff as possible checks, and AT&T’s terms are one carrier-specific example.
No code-entry screen appears
Do not assume the phone is broken or keep trying unrelated codes. The carrier may use a supported settings or app workflow, or an automatic unlock. Follow the original provider’s instructions for the exact model and software.

The phone accepts the unlock but service is limited
Confirm that the new SIM or service is activated, then check compatibility for the exact Galaxy model and carrier. A network unlock removes the carrier restriction; it does not add radio bands or guarantee support for every calling and data feature. Samsung Canada notes that VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and 5G optimization can depend on the carrier and model. See Samsung Canada’s compatibility guidance for unlocked Galaxy devices.

Samsung’s consumer guidance sends network-unlock requests to the original carrier or retailer. Ask that provider to identify who is responsible for the device and give the specific reason if it cannot process the request.
