Start with the company that processed the payment, not necessarily the game developer. Find the receipt or transaction history, stop using the item, and submit a truthful request through the billing platform’s official support page as soon as possible. An accidental purchase is not automatically refundable: the outcome depends on the platform, country, item type, time elapsed, and whether the game or item was used.
Use the transaction record to identify whether Apple, Google Play, PlayStation Store, Steam, Nintendo eShop, or a publisher processed the charge. The policies below were checked on October 11, 2026; store rules and local consumer rights can change.
1. Identify the billing provider before asking for money back
The game’s logo on your screen does not prove who billed you. A mobile game may charge through Apple or Google Play; a console game may use a console storefront; a PC title may use Steam or another retailer; and some publishers operate their own payment system. The company that received the real-money payment normally controls the refund decision.
- Search your email. Look for a receipt, order confirmation, or invoice around the time of the purchase. Note the order number, date, amount, currency, item name, and account email.
- Check transaction history. Open the purchase history for every account that could have been used on the device. Families often have more than one Apple Account or Google account signed in.
- Read the merchant name on your bank or card statement. It can reveal the store even when the game name is abbreviated.
- Record what was purchased. Classify it as virtual currency, a consumable, a skin or other add-on, a boost, downloadable content, or a complete game. Different rules can apply to each category.
- Check whether the item was delivered or used. Do not spend currency, equip a cosmetic item, activate a boost, trade an item, or launch the game if the relevant store’s rule makes that important.
If the charge is missing from one account, check the other accounts before assuming that the store has no record. A receipt sent to a family member’s address or a second account can be the key to finding the transaction.

2. Preserve your eligibility before submitting
Submit the request promptly. Some platforms set short windows, and several distinguish an unused item from one that has already been consumed, changed, transferred, or delivered. Keep the game closed when a platform’s policy says that launching matters, and do not try to disguise an accidental purchase as fraud.
- Save the receipt and a screenshot of the transaction history.
- Write down the exact date and time, including the time zone if it is shown.
- Note whether a child, friend, or family member made the purchase and whether the account holder authorized the payment method.
- Keep confirmation numbers and support-ticket emails after you submit.
- Do not file duplicate requests through several channels while the first request is pending; duplicates can make the history harder to follow.
Country and consumer-protection law can add rights beyond a store’s standard policy. A store’s published rule is not a guarantee of approval, and a processing estimate is not a promise that money will arrive by that date.
3. Platform rules and request paths

Apple App Store
Apple’s documented route is to sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “Request a refund,” select the reason and purchase, and submit. Apple says some purchases may be eligible and that eligibility varies by country or region. Apple asks customers to allow 24 to 48 hours for a status update. That window describes when an update may appear; it does not mean the request will be approved or that the funds will be credited within 48 hours.

If the transaction does not appear, check each Apple Account used for purchases. If the request is unavailable through the reporting page, contact Apple Support and provide the order number, date, amount, and item description. Explain that the purchase was accidental, identify who made it, and state whether the item was used. Do not claim that the charge was unauthorized if someone you know made the purchase.
Google Play
Google says refund rules depend on what was bought, when and how it was paid for, and the user’s location. Start with Google Play’s refund-help process while signed in to the account that paid. Include the transaction details and describe the accidental purchase accurately.

Google separates two situations that are often confused:
- Known person’s mistake: If a friend or family member accidentally bought the item using the account, request a refund through the normal purchase-refund route.
- Unknown unauthorized charge: If the account holder does not recognize the charge and nobody known to them made it, use Google’s unauthorized-charge reporting route. Google states that such a charge should be reported within 120 days.
The 120-day period applies to the unauthorized-charge description, not to every accidental purchase. Never label a known family member’s mistake as an unknown fraud report. Google also notes that the app developer may help with purchase problems and may process refunds under its own policy and applicable law. Contact the developer when Google cannot locate the order or when the problem concerns how the item was delivered.

PlayStation Store
The US PlayStation checklist is especially specific for in-game consumables such as virtual currency, skins, emotes, and XP boosts. All three conditions must be met: the request is made within 14 days of purchase, the purchase was made through PlayStation Store, and the game has not been launched after the purchase.
Delivery timing explains why launching matters. An item bought outside gameplay may be delivered the next time the game starts; an item bought during gameplay is delivered immediately. Launching after purchase can therefore make the transaction ineligible under the US checklist, even if you never intentionally spent the currency. If you already launched the game, state that fact rather than hiding it; PlayStation may still assess any rights provided by local law or another applicable exception.
- Open your PlayStation account’s Transaction History.
- Select the eligible transaction.
- Choose “Request Refund” and follow the prompts.
- Keep the submission confirmation and any follow-up message.
This is the US policy scope described by the support page. Other countries can have different rules, and local law may provide additional rights. Use the support page for the country associated with the purchasing account.

Steam
Steam has a separate rule for in-game purchases; do not apply the familiar 14-day and under-two-hours rule for complete game titles to an item bought inside a game. Steam says an in-game purchase in a Valve-developed game can be refunded within 48 hours of purchase only if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred.

Steam says eligibility is shown at the time of purchase. Sign in to Steam Support, select the purchase, and submit the request with the transaction date and an explanation of the accidental click or purchase. Leave the item untouched while the request is reviewed. If the item was consumed, altered, or transferred, explain exactly what happened; do not describe it as unused.
Steam also says you may submit a request for review even when the transaction falls outside the stated rules. That is a request for discretionary review, not an entitlement or an assurance of approval.
Nintendo eShop
Nintendo’s support page for downloaded games and DLC—including wrong-game, disliked-game, and accidental purchases—states: “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases.” Nintendo’s US digital-products policy likewise says payments are final and non-refundable except when Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one.
Do not assume that an accidental purchase will be reversed. Contact Nintendo Support if the situation remains unresolved, provide the order details, and ask whether an exception or legal right applies to your country and circumstances. Nintendo also points to parental controls as a way to restrict future eShop purchases; enabling them does not itself reverse an existing transaction.

Publisher or game support
The publisher may be able to explain an item’s delivery status, restore missing content, or tell you which retailer owns the transaction. It usually cannot override a store that processed the real-money payment. Use the merchant named on the receipt for the refund request, and use the publisher’s official support page for game-account or item-delivery problems.
Activision, for example, says its support does not refund accidental purchases made with in-game currency. For real-money purchases, its guidance directs players to the retailer that charged them, such as the console, PC, or mobile store. That is Activision’s policy, not a universal rule for every publisher. Another game may have a different policy, so check that game’s official support information.
4. Write a clear, truthful refund request
Support agents need enough detail to match your explanation to the transaction. Keep the request factual and brief:
- Identify the account email or platform username.
- Give the order or transaction number, purchase date, amount, currency, and item name.
- State that the purchase was accidental and explain who made the purchase.
- Say whether the game was launched and whether the item or currency was used, modified, or transferred.
- Ask for a refund under the platform’s applicable policy and mention any relevant local-law concern without making a legal conclusion you cannot support.
- Attach only the receipt or screenshots the support form requests; redact unrelated payment details.
A useful explanation is: “This transaction was made accidentally on my account on [date]. The item is [unused/used], and the game was [not launched/launched] after purchase. Please review order [number] under the applicable refund policy.” Template variables such as the date and order number belong in your own submission; never send another person’s full card number or password.
5. If the request is denied
Check for a simple account mismatch
Confirm that you used the account that paid, not merely the account that plays the game. Search every relevant inbox and transaction history. On mobile devices, a family member may have purchased through a different Apple Account or Google account.

Review the reason for denial
A denial may cite elapsed time, an item that was consumed, a launched game, a regional rule, or a purchase made outside the store. Compare that reason with the actual facts. If the store’s form offered an appeal or support contact, reply once with the missing transaction evidence rather than submitting contradictory explanations.
Contact the right party for the remaining problem
If the store confirms that it did not process the charge, contact the merchant shown on the receipt. If the payment is correct but the item is missing or defective, contact the game publisher. If the charge is genuinely unknown and not made by anyone you know, use the platform’s unauthorized-charge process and notify your payment provider if necessary.
Consider local consumer rights
Store policies do not necessarily describe every statutory remedy. If you are in a jurisdiction with digital-content cancellation or consumer-protection rights, consult the relevant official government or consumer-advice source for your country. Describe the facts accurately; a statutory claim is different from falsely reporting fraud.

6. Prevent another accidental purchase
- Turn on a device or store setting that requires a password, passcode, biometric check, or approval for every purchase.
- Use parental controls on child accounts and remove saved payment methods where practical.
- Keep children on their own account instead of sharing an adult purchasing account.
- Review purchase-confirmation emails and transaction history regularly.
- Explain that virtual currency is bought with real money and that tapping a confirmation button can complete a charge immediately.
- Ask the game publisher whether a spending limit, family approval, or account-level purchase restriction is available.
What to remember
The fastest path is: identify the billing provider, stop using the item, submit a truthful request through that provider, and keep the confirmation. Apple, Google Play, PlayStation Store, Steam, Nintendo eShop, and publishers apply materially different rules. A short deadline, an already-launched game, or a consumed item can change the result, while country-specific law may add rights not shown in a standard support checklist.
