Start with the seller, not your bank. Find the receipt, identify whether the preorder came from a console store, PC storefront, separate code retailer, or physical retailer, then use that seller’s official cancellation or refund process. Eligibility can change when payment is processed, the game is downloaded or preloaded, streaming begins, or the game is played.
The rules below reflect official United States guidance for PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo, plus a separate United Kingdom PlayStation policy, checked on October 13, 2026. Your country’s policy and mandatory consumer rights may differ, and storefront interfaces can change.
1. Identify who actually sold the preorder
The company that took your payment normally controls cancellation. Check the email receipt, bank descriptor, console account history, or PC storefront purchase history before opening a support case. The platform displayed on the game’s box is not necessarily the merchant that sold it.

A payment processor, console manufacturer, or bank may appear on your statement without being the seller responsible for a physical order or a separately sold code. Start with the merchant named on the receipt. If you bought through a marketplace, bundle, subscription promotion, or retailer’s own launcher, use that merchant’s order record rather than guessing from the game’s publisher.

2. Check the conditions before you act
Open the order details and write down the purchase date, scheduled release date, country of the account, edition, and current download status. Then check these conditions before launching the title or allowing an automatic download:
- Has the main game downloaded, preloaded, or begun streaming? PlayStation policies can make that the deciding condition. The UK policy also treats streaming as a loss of ordinary cancellation eligibility.
- Has anyone played it? Steam’s post-release rule uses playtime, not merely ownership.
- Has payment been captured? Nintendo’s US eShop FAQ distinguishes an order that has not yet been processed from one that has already been charged.
- Could automatic downloads start? Review the console’s automatic-download settings if your platform’s policy requires that the main content not have begun downloading.
- Is the order a code, a physical item, or a direct digital purchase? The wrong support channel can delay the request or leave the seller unable to help.
- Are bonus items already available? Immediate-access preorder bonuses may be tied to the main order and can stop working after cancellation.
Deleting an already downloaded game does not necessarily restore eligibility. Treat the download, preload, stream, or play event as permanent for policy purposes unless the seller confirms otherwise. Do not launch the title merely to test it while deciding whether to cancel; on Steam, post-release playtime is part of the stated test.
Take a screenshot of the order page before changing settings. Record the time zone shown by the account if a deadline is close, and keep any email stating the planned release date. These details make it easier to show what the storefront displayed when you submitted the request.
3. Submit a clear request through official support
- Collect the evidence. Have the order number, purchase date, account email or gamer tag, game title and edition, platform, payment method, and release date available. A screenshot of the order status can help if the account page later changes.
- Use the account’s official support route. Sign in to the storefront that received the order and choose its refund, cancellation, or contact-support flow. Select the preorder transaction rather than opening a general billing question when the interface offers that option.
- State the request precisely. Say that you want to cancel the preorder and receive a refund, identify the transaction, and explain whether the main content has not downloaded, streamed, or been played. Do not claim a condition that is not true.
- Ask where the money will go. Policies may return funds to the original payment method or offer store credit instead. Steam notes a special limitation for older purchases, described below.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the case number, email, chat transcript, and any stated decision. If the request is refused, that record helps you ask for a policy review or exercise rights available in your country.
A concise message can read: “Please cancel order [number] for [title and edition]. I purchased it on [date] for [platform/account]. The main content has [not downloaded or streamed / not been played]. Please confirm whether the refund will return to the original payment method and provide a case number.” Edit the bracketed statement so it is accurate.
Do not begin with a bank chargeback for a valid purchase. The platform guidance reviewed here directs customers to the seller’s support process and does not establish a chargeback as a substitute for it. A payment dispute can create a separate account issue and may make an ordinary support resolution more difficult.
4. Platform-by-platform rules
PlayStation Store in the United States
For a US PlayStation preorder made more than 14 days before release, the published support guidance says the request must arrive before release and the main content must not have been downloaded or preloaded. For a preorder made less than 14 days before release, the request must arrive within 14 days of purchase, with the same no-download and no-preload condition for the main content.
The two timing tests are easy to confuse. Count backward from the scheduled release date to determine whether the order was placed more than 14 days in advance; then, for an order placed inside that period, count 14 days from the purchase date. In either case, the no-download condition still matters. If the support form shows a different eligibility result, save a screenshot and ask the representative to identify the applicable regional rule.
Some preorders include bonus items available immediately. If you cancel while the main preorder content has not begun downloading, those bonus items stop working after cancellation. Their prior availability does not by itself create a separate right to keep them.

If the purchase was a voucher code bought from a different retailer, PlayStation’s US support page directs you back to that retailer. PlayStation also notes that local law may provide additional rights beyond the voluntary store policy. That statement is important if the standard form rejects a request that may be protected by mandatory rules in your location.
PlayStation Store in the United Kingdom
The UK cancellation policy uses both the time between payment and release and the content’s download or streaming state. When payment was made more than 14 days before release, cancellation is available before release only if the main digital content has not begun downloading or streaming. When payment was made 14 days or less before release, the policy allows cancellation up to 14 days after payment, again only while the main content has not begun downloading or streaming.
Starting the main download or stream generally removes ordinary cancellation eligibility unless the item is faulty. Automatic downloads can begin without a fresh manual click, so check the console’s automatic-download settings as soon as you decide to cancel. These are UK policy terms and should not be treated as a universal rule for other countries. If the title is faulty, explain the defect and request the remedy available under the applicable law or policy rather than describing the request only as a change of mind.

Steam publishes a different preorder framework. A preorder may be refunded at any time before the game’s release. After release, the preorder remains eligible under Steam’s stated policy when the request is submitted within two weeks of release and the game has been played for less than two hours.
The two-hour condition concerns playtime recorded by Steam. Downloading the game is not the same as playing it under that stated test, but launching it can add time quickly. Close the game and submit the request promptly if you are within the window. A request made before release does not need to wait for the usual post-release period.
Steam also warns that a purchase made more than six months earlier may no longer be refundable to the original payment method. In that situation, you can still request Steam Wallet credit, but the available outcome depends on Steam’s handling of the transaction. Do not assume that the six-month limitation applies to PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, or a retailer.
Advanced Access changes when the normal playtime window starts. You can request a refund before Advanced Access begins, while the standard 14-day period starts on the game’s release date. Check the order’s release and Advanced Access dates rather than assuming the first playable moment is the official release. Keep in mind that any time played during Advanced Access may still affect the recorded playtime considered by support.
For a gifted preorder, the recipient must initiate and approve removal of the gift before the purchaser submits the refund request. The purchaser should not assume that declining or ignoring the gift automatically completes the refund. Coordinate with the recipient, wait for confirmation that the gift was removed, then submit the purchaser’s transaction through Steam’s refund flow.

Nintendo eShop in the United States
Nintendo’s US digital-products policy says Nintendo Account payments, including pre-purchases, are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires a different result.
Nintendo Support’s US eShop FAQ describes a narrower cancellation opportunity: an eShop preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, up to seven days before release. That timing explains when the account may still expose a cancellation option; it is not a promise that a payment already collected will be refunded. Check whether the account shows a pending authorization or a completed charge before relying on the cancellation control.
Nintendo’s separate guidance for a physical pre-purchase from Nintendo Store says the item is charged immediately and that cancellation should be requested by contacting Nintendo support. Because the physical order is charged at purchase, do not assume the unshipped status alone guarantees repayment. Use the physical-order receipt and Nintendo’s support route, not the eShop digital form.

An Xbox Support page for digital-game refund terms was identified, but its policy details were not readable in the available material. Do not rely on a guessed deadline, playtime limit, or preorder promise. Open the current official Xbox support page for the country on your account, confirm the exact terms, and submit the request through that route. Save the page or case confirmation showing the terms that applied when you asked.
5. Physical preorders and separately sold codes
Physical game reserved with a retailer
Contact the retailer named on the receipt and ask specifically about preorder cancellation, deposits, shipping, and returns. A physical order may be charged when placed, when it ships, or at another stage defined by that retailer. If a shipment has already left the warehouse, the retailer may handle the request as a return rather than a cancellation.
Ask whether a deposit is refundable, whether shipping has been purchased, and whether a restocking or return condition applies; the retailer’s written terms control those details. Keep the receipt, order number, delivery address, and any promised release-day shipping information. Do not send a physical copy back until the retailer gives you the return instructions and destination. Photograph the package and tracking label if the retailer asks for a return.
Code purchased outside the platform store
Take the request to the code seller. The platform may be able to confirm whether a code was redeemed, but it generally cannot reverse a retailer’s sale or set that retailer’s refund terms. Include proof of purchase and explain whether the code was redeemed; do not publish the code in a public support forum. If the code was already revealed or activated, ask the retailer which remedy its terms provide rather than assuming the platform can deactivate it.

“Can I cancel before the game comes out?”
Often, but not under one universal rule. Steam states that preorders can be refunded before release. PlayStation’s US and UK policies add purchase-timing and no-download or no-stream conditions. Nintendo’s US policy is generally final, with its FAQ describing cancellation before payment processing and preload within its stated cutoff. Use the section for your storefront and country rather than relying on the release date alone.

“Can I get a refund after the game preloads?”
Preloading is a key restriction in the PlayStation and Nintendo guidance summarized here. If the main content has already preloaded, the ordinary eligibility described by those policies may be gone. Do not delete the files and assume the status resets; ask support whether a local-law or fault-based exception applies. Stop any further download activity while you document the order and contact support.
“What if the game is defective?”
A fault can be treated differently from a voluntary change of mind. The UK PlayStation policy expressly preserves the possibility of a remedy when the item is faulty. Describe the actual defect, when it occurred, and any troubleshooting already attempted. Your country’s consumer law may provide additional remedies. Keep crash messages, error codes, dates, and support transcripts, but do not exaggerate a performance complaint into a claim of non-delivery.
“What if the order is several months old?”
Check the storefront’s age limits and the payment destination. Steam says that after more than six months, repayment to the original payment method may not be available even though Steam Wallet credit may still be requested. Other platforms may use different rules, so do not transfer Steam’s limitation to them. An older order can also have a different release date, payment state, or account region than you remember.

Sign in to the account shown on the receipt and identify the transaction there. If a family member, gift recipient, or secondary account is involved, the seller may require that account holder to complete part of the process. Do not create a second refund request for the same order while the first case is open; refer to the existing case number instead.

- Read the denial reason and compare it with the policy for the account’s country, not a policy page for another region.
- Verify the actual event that triggered the decision: payment capture, preload, download, stream, playtime, release date, or an expired request window.
- Reply through the same official case and ask for a manual review if the automated form misidentified the order.
- Provide the receipt, order history, case number, and a concise timeline. If the game was faulty, document the fault rather than arguing only that you changed your mind.
- Check mandatory consumer protections in your country. PlayStation’s US guidance expressly says local law may provide additional rights, and a platform’s voluntary policy does not override a right that the law makes mandatory.
A useful timeline lists: purchase date and time, payment date, release date, first download or stream, first play session, date of the request, and the seller’s response. Point out which event the policy actually addresses. If you used the wrong support channel, withdraw nothing; simply ask the merchant named on the receipt to review the transaction.
Use a bank dispute only after understanding its consequences and the requirements of your payment provider. A dispute can suspend an account or complicate a legitimate support resolution; it is not established here as the normal preorder-refund route.
8. A quick decision checklist
- Receipt found and seller identified.
- Correct country and storefront policy opened.
- Release date and purchase date recorded.
- Payment-processing status checked where the platform uses it.
- Automatic download or preload disabled when relevant.
- Main content not downloaded, streamed, or played if the rule requires that.
- Order number, account details, and edition ready.
- Official cancellation or refund request submitted.
- Confirmation or case number saved.
- Local-law rights checked if the seller refuses.
Because storefront terms and interfaces can change, confirm the current official page immediately before submitting. The thresholds above are platform policy terms, not general statistics and not a guarantee that every country or payment method receives the same result.

Can I get a refund after a game preloads?
A preload can remove ordinary eligibility under the PlayStation and Nintendo guidance described here. Deleting the files usually does not reset the event. Contact official support and ask whether a fault or mandatory local-law remedy applies.
How do I cancel a Steam preorder?
Open Steam’s refund flow for the preorder transaction. Before release, Steam states that a preorder may be refunded at any time. After release, submit within two weeks and keep playtime below two hours under Steam’s stated rule.
