If the Windows 11 taskbar is missing, first check whether it is set to hide automatically: open Taskbar settings > Taskbar behaviors and turn off Automatically hide the taskbar. If it is enabled, move your pointer to the bottom edge of the screen to reveal the bar. If neither step works, restart Windows, install available updates, and only then consider checking system files.

1. Turn off taskbar auto-hide

Windows 11 can hide the taskbar automatically, so check this reversible setting before trying more involved fixes. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. Expand Taskbar behaviors, then clear Automatically hide the taskbar if it is selected. Microsoft documents this control in its Windows taskbar customization guidance and accessibility guidance.

2. Test the reveal gesture

If you want the taskbar to remain hidden, or the auto-hide setting is already enabled, move the mouse pointer to the very bottom edge of the screen. On a touch-capable display, touch that edge instead. Microsoft says this should reveal a hidden taskbar when auto-hide is on. If it appears, the taskbar is hidden by its configured behavior rather than missing from the desktop.

3. Restart the computer

If the taskbar remains absent after checking its visibility setting, restart Windows. A restart is one of Microsoft’s recommended troubleshooting actions for File Explorer problems and can apply pending updates, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every taskbar issue. Save open work first, then use Start > Power > Restart. Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance covers this step.

4. Install available Windows updates

Check for updates and install those offered for your device. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and follow the prompts. Restart if Windows asks you to. Updates are a supported maintenance step in Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance; their availability does not establish that a particular update caused your taskbar problem.

5. Check Windows system files if the problem persists

If the taskbar is still missing after the simpler checks, missing or corrupted system files are one area Microsoft identifies for troubleshooting. Use Microsoft’s official File Explorer instructions for the current System File Checker procedure and commands. This is a later troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try for a taskbar that may simply be set to auto-hide.

If the taskbar is still missing

Microsoft’s guidance supports these settings and general Windows troubleshooting steps, but it does not establish one universal cause or a guaranteed repair for every missing-taskbar case. Note your Windows version and build, when the problem began, and any recent changes; use those details when following Microsoft’s support options. Avoid jumping straight to resetting Windows or other recovery tools for a visibility problem.

On a touch-capable device

Windows 11 does not have a manual tablet-mode switch. Microsoft says tablet mode changes automatically as a keyboard is detached or attached, or as the device changes form factor. Do not follow Windows 10 instructions that tell you to toggle a tablet-mode tile; see Microsoft’s tablet-mode guidance.
