Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The practical route is to use a free host, select the same Minecraft version and modloader as your modpack, install the server files, start the instance, and give friends the address the host generates. In 2026, Falix is the better-documented choice for Forge, Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, and one-click modpacks. Minehut is easier for a small group running a lighter pack, but its free Starter plan has 1 GB of RAM and 10 player slots.
Neither option is equivalent to a paid, always-on server. Free instances use shared resources, sleep when empty, and may take time to wake. Large modpacks can exceed the available memory, so choose the host according to the pack and group you actually intend to run.
Free modded Minecraft hosting compared
The two documented free choices have very different ceilings. Falix publishes more memory, a CPU allocation, NVMe storage, broad loader support, and one-click modpack sources. Minehut’s free Starter plan is simpler and has a clear 10-player limit, but only 1 GB of RAM. The figures below are the providers’ 2026 plan documentation, not independent performance tests.

Falix describes its offer as “Your own Minecraft server. Free, forever. No card. No time limit.” That wording does not mean the process is always immediate: the same free service can sleep after inactivity and place a start in a queue. Minehut’s support documentation calls it “a freemium (free premium) server provider,” which is a useful reminder that free access is tied to provider limits and policies.

Choose the host before installing the modpack
Choose Falix for loader and pack flexibility
Falix is the stronger documented fit when your group needs a specific loader or wants to import a pack from a major public platform. Its free plan lists Forge, Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge, plus one-click modpack sources from Modrinth, CurseForge, Feed The Beast, and Technic. The 2.5 GB shared-memory allowance gives a heavier pack more room than Minehut’s 1 GB, although it is still a shared allocation rather than a guarantee that every large pack will run well.
The plan lists unlimited player slots, but that is a slot setting, not unlimited processing capacity. One CPU core and 2.5 GB of shared RAM still constrain world generation, entity counts, chunk loading, and mod initialization. Treat the slot number as an administrative maximum rather than a promise that a large group can play smoothly.

Choose Minehut for a small, lighter group
Minehut’s free Starter plan lists 1 GB of RAM and 10 player slots, with no time limit and sleep when the server is empty. That can suit a small group using a compact mod set or a relatively light Fabric installation. It is a poor starting point for a memory-hungry pack: the 1 GB ceiling leaves little room for the server itself, the loader, world data, and mods to initialize together.

Minehut allows up to five free servers per account according to its 2026 support documentation. The August 2026 policy also says extra servers can be scheduled for deletion, so do not treat the five-server allowance as permanent archival storage. Keep copies of worlds and configurations outside the provider.
What you need before creating the server
- A Minecraft Java Edition client and a fixed version. Write down the exact version required by the modpack, such as the version displayed by its launcher or download page.
- The correct modloader. Forge, Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge are different server platforms. A client using one loader cannot normally join a server running another.
- A complete client modpack. Every player should install the same pack release, including the same loader and Minecraft version.
- Enough free-plan capacity. Compare the pack’s memory guidance with 2.5 GB shared RAM on Falix or 1 GB on Minehut. A pack that needs more memory will not become suitable merely because the provider allows more player slots.
- A backup destination. Have local storage or a cloud folder ready before you generate a world or change server files. Falix documents Google Drive backups on its free plan.
- Time for waking and queues. Free instances can stop while empty. Plan for a wake-up delay when your group joins rather than assuming the address responds instantly.
How to create a free modded server
1. Create an account and open the free-server panel
- Register with Falix or Minehut and verify the account if the provider requests it.
- Choose the option to create or start a free server. On Minehut, keep the five-server account limit and the August 2026 deletion warning in mind if you create more than one instance.
- Give the server a recognizable name. Use a name that distinguishes the pack and Minecraft version if you expect to maintain more than one test world.
2. Set the Minecraft version and loader
- Check the modpack’s required Minecraft version in the launcher or pack metadata.
- Select that exact version in the host panel.
- Select the matching loader. Falix explicitly lists Forge, Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge; select the one named by your pack.
- Do not mix loaders because they have similar names. Forge mods are not automatically Fabric mods, and a NeoForge server is not interchangeable with a Forge server for every release.
Make this choice before adding content. Changing the loader after a world has been created can require a fresh installation and can make existing configurations incompatible.
3. Install the modpack or server files
- Use the host’s one-click modpack browser when the pack is available from a supported source. Falix lists Modrinth, CurseForge, Feed The Beast, and Technic.
- Select the exact pack release, not simply the newest release. The server and every client must use the same release.
- If the pack is not available through the browser, install the server files supplied by the pack author and upload or place them through the host’s file manager according to its interface.
- Review the generated configuration before the first launch. Remove duplicate files only when the pack’s instructions identify them as duplicates; deleting an apparently unused dependency can prevent the server from starting.
4. Accept the server’s first-run requirements
On first launch, the server may create configuration files, generate a world, or display a license prompt. Follow the panel’s instructions and wait for the process to finish before stopping the instance. World generation and mod initialization are often the most memory-intensive part of the first start, so a free plan may take longer than a later restart.

5. Start the server and wait for it to become ready
- Press the host’s start button.
- If the server is sleeping, wait for the wake-up process. Falix documents possible start queues, and both providers can stop free servers while they are empty.
- Use the console or status indicator to confirm that the server has finished loading rather than handing friends an address while it is still initializing.
6. Copy the generated address and test one client
- Copy the address shown in the provider panel.
- Install the identical modpack, Minecraft version, and loader on one test client.
- Join that client first. Confirm that the world loads, blocks and items from the pack appear, and no missing-mod message is shown.
- Only then send the address to the rest of the group.
7. Back up before changing the installation
Create a backup after the first successful join and before adding another large pack, changing the loader, or editing world-generation settings. Keep at least one copy outside the host. Falix documents Google Drive backups on its free plan; use that facility or download a copy when the panel provides the option.
Make the client and server match exactly
Most failed joins are compatibility failures rather than networking failures. A player can be rejected when any of the following differs between the client and server:
- Minecraft version
- Loader family or loader version
- Modpack release
- Individual mod version
- Required dependency or library
- Configuration that changes required content
Install the pack through the same distribution method for everyone when possible. If one player adds an extra client-only visual mod, that may be harmless, but a missing gameplay mod or a different dependency version can stop the connection. When troubleshooting, compare the complete file lists rather than relying on the pack’s name alone.

Common problems and practical fixes
The server never finishes starting
- Check whether the free instance is waking from sleep or waiting in a provider queue.
- Read the console for a loader error, missing dependency, or corrupted configuration.
- Confirm that the selected Minecraft version and loader match the server files.
- Restore the last known-good backup instead of repeatedly restarting a broken installation.
The server stops during world generation
World generation can exceed the available memory on a free plan, especially with a large terrain or structure pack. Reduce the pack, remove nonessential content, or move to a plan with more memory. Do not interpret a successful small test world as proof that unexplored terrain will perform identically.
A player receives a mismatched-mod error
- Ask the player to record the exact Minecraft version and loader shown by the launcher.
- Compare the player’s modpack release with the server’s installed release.
- Check for duplicate or manually updated files in the client’s mods folder.
- Reinstall the pack cleanly if the file lists still differ.
The address works for one player but not another
First verify that the server is actually online and not asleep. Then have both players copy the address directly from the provider panel and confirm that the same server instance is running. If the server is in Europe, players far from that region may experience higher latency; the cited provider information establishes Falix’s Europe hosting location but does not publish a latency guarantee.
The server is laggy despite available slots
Player slots do not measure performance. Falix’s unlimited slot setting still shares 2.5 GB of RAM and one CPU core. Minehut’s 10 slots still share a 1 GB memory ceiling. Reduce simultaneous players, lower demanding settings in the pack, limit rapid world exploration, or choose a larger paid plan when the workload consistently exceeds the free allocation.

Understand sleep, queues, and availability
Free hosting trades cost for provider-controlled availability. Falix says a free server sleeps after 10 minutes without players and may queue starts. Minehut says free servers sleep when empty. Sleep preserves the free resource pool, but it means the first person to arrive may need to start the instance and wait.

Plan group sessions with a few minutes for startup, and keep a backup so a provider-side interruption does not become world loss. If your group needs an always-running world, automatic overnight farms, or immediate joining at any time, a paid upgrade is the relevant next step rather than trying to work around sleep.
When a paid upgrade becomes necessary
Consider upgrading when the pack cannot complete startup within the free memory allowance, the server crashes while generating terrain, or regular play produces persistent tick or connection delays. More memory can help a large modpack initialize, while additional CPU capacity can matter when many entities, machines, or players are active. Always-on operation is a separate requirement: extra RAM does not by itself remove a provider’s free-tier sleep policy.
Before upgrading, make a backup and record the current Minecraft version, loader, pack release, world seed, and configuration. That information makes migration less risky and lets you test the paid instance against the same known-good installation.
Rules for keeping a free server dependable
- Freeze the Minecraft version and modpack release for the duration of a group season.
- Keep a dated backup before every major mod or configuration change.
- Give server operators a written list of the exact loader and pack versions.
- Start the server before inviting the group, allowing for sleep recovery or a queue.
- Avoid creating unnecessary Minehut servers because extra free servers can be scheduled for deletion under the August 2026 policy.
- Use the provider’s address exactly as displayed and do not publish account credentials in chat.
- Move to a higher-resource plan when the pack’s documented requirements exceed the free allocation instead of repeatedly deleting world data.
Which option should you use?
Use Falix when modloader choice, one-click pack import, storage, or memory headroom is the deciding factor. Its documented 2.5 GB shared RAM, one CPU core, 10 GB NVMe storage, Europe location, broad loader support, and Google Drive backup option make it the more capable free starting point for modded play, provided you accept the 10-minute idle sleep and possible start queue.
Use Minehut when you have a small group, a light installation, and value a straightforward 10-player cap. Its 1 GB Starter plan is substantially tighter for modded workloads, and its free instances sleep when empty. Keep external backups, and remember that the five-server allowance is subject to the provider’s August 2026 policy on extra-server deletion.
