The short answer: you can get a free web address immediately by using a platform subdomain such as yourname.github.io, yoursite.netlify.app, project.vercel.app, or username.wixsite.com/siteaddress. However, these are not independently owned domain names.
If you want a branded address such as yourbusiness.com, the usual “free domain” offers are limited promotions: a website provider may cover the registration cost for the first year when you purchase an annual plan. Students, eligible nonprofits, and technically capable users may also have additional options.
First, understand what “free domain” means
A conventional domain name is a registered address such as example.com, example.org, or example.co.uk. You normally register it through a registrar, which collects the registry fee and, for many domains, applicable ICANN-related charges.

That difference matters. A platform can change its terms, suspend an account, or discontinue a free subdomain. A promotional custom domain can begin charging at renewal. A sponsored domain may not give your organization complete registrar control.
Option 1: Use a free platform subdomain
This is the only broadly available, no-payment route for most people. You do not register a normal second-level domain; instead, you publish your site beneath a platform-owned domain.
GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages provides user and organization sites at an address based on the account name, such as yourname.github.io. Project sites may appear below that address. This is particularly useful for documentation, open-source projects, developer portfolios, resumes, and static websites.
Advantages: no domain-registration bill, excellent compatibility with static HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and a familiar address for technical projects.
Limitations: the address includes GitHub’s namespace, and GitHub Pages is not a general-purpose server for applications requiring a traditional backend.
Netlify
A site deployed to Netlify receives a default address in the form site-name.netlify.app. You can use it for a static site, a prototype, or a small front-end project without buying a separate domain.
The site name must be available, and changing the name later can affect links and bookmarks. If you eventually buy a custom domain, you can normally attach it to the same deployment, but plan the move carefully so visitors and search engines reach the new address.
Vercel
Vercel assigns deployments a project-based address under .vercel.app. It is a practical choice for sites and applications built with modern JavaScript frameworks, especially when the project is already hosted on Vercel.
As with the other platform addresses, the free URL is not a portable domain registration. It remains tied to the Vercel project and account.
Wix
Wix’s free hosting option uses an address in the form siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress. It is suitable for trying the Wix editor, creating a personal site, or publishing a basic project without paying for hosting or registration.
The free Wix address includes Wix branding in the URL. Wix states that replacing it with a custom domain requires a paid plan.
How to choose among free subdomains
- Choose GitHub Pages for developer portfolios, documentation, and static projects.
- Choose Netlify for straightforward static deployments and previews.
- Choose Vercel for projects already built around Vercel’s deployment workflow.
- Choose Wix if you want a visual site builder and do not need independent domain ownership yet.
Use a platform subdomain when the URL itself is not central to trust or branding. It is usually a poor long-term choice for a business whose customers must remember and recognize the address.
Option 2: Get a custom domain free for the first year with an annual plan
Some website builders include a domain credit when you purchase a qualifying annual website plan. This can give you a real custom domain, but the website plan is not free. Think of it as a bundled first-year registration, not a permanently free domain.
WordPress.com
WordPress.com says that new annual plans include a domain credit for one year. Eligible choices include popular extensions such as .com, .net, and .org, subject to availability and the plan’s terms.
The offer does not apply in the same way to monthly plans. After the first year, the domain renews at the standard registration price unless you cancel, transfer it, or otherwise change the renewal arrangement.

Wix
Wix advertises a free custom domain for one year with qualifying annual website plans. Its public offer has included extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .biz, .shop, and .xyz, although availability, eligibility, and renewal prices vary by extension and plan.
This is separate from Wix’s free wixsite.com address. If you need a builder and a custom domain, compare the total plan price—not just the domain line item—and inspect the price that applies in year two.

Before choosing a “free” first-year domain, calculate:
Two-year cost = qualifying plan cost + year-two domain renewal + optional extrasOptional extras may include business email, premium DNS features, privacy protection, paid templates, backups, or third-party services. Also check whether canceling the website plan causes the domain to expire, removes the promotional price, or leaves the domain active under a separate renewal charge.
Option 3: Check the GitHub Student Developer Pack
Verified students may qualify for the GitHub Student Developer Pack. GitHub’s published eligibility information describes the pack as available to verified students aged 13 or older who are enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting course. The pack contains partner offers and free or discounted developer tools.
The important qualification is that the exact domain benefit is not permanent or universal. Partner offers can change, and the public pack information does not by itself establish which domain provider, extensions, registration period, renewal terms, or geographic restrictions apply at the moment you apply.

- Open the live Student Developer Pack after approval.
- Read the current domain partner’s offer and terms.
- Record the registration length, eligible extensions, renewal price, privacy terms, and transfer rules.
- Set a reminder before the promotional registration expires.
Do not rely on older articles promising a free .me, .tech, or another particular extension unless that offer is currently displayed in your pack and remains available in your country and school category.
Option 4: Look for nonprofit domain sponsorship
Eligible charities may have access to sponsorship rather than a normal free-registration promotion. Free For Charity describes a program that registers, pays for, renews, and manages a nonprofit’s .org domain in its Cloudflare account. The nonprofit receives domain-administration access, but the organization does not independently hold the registrar account in the same way it would after registering directly.
This can be a genuine way for a qualifying nonprofit to avoid registration and renewal charges. It is not a general free-domain registrar for personal or commercial websites.
Before accepting sponsorship, obtain clear answers to these questions:
- Who is the legal registrant?
- Who controls the registrar account and recovery email?
- Can the nonprofit manage DNS records directly?
- Can the domain be transferred to an account controlled by the nonprofit?
- What happens if the sponsor closes, changes its program, or the nonprofit leaves?
- Will email, website hosting, and DNS continue during a disagreement or transition?
If long-term independence is important, compare sponsorship with paying for the domain directly. A small registration fee may be worthwhile if it gives the nonprofit complete control.
Option 5: Request a free delegated subdomain through EU.org
EU.org provides a free delegated namespace through a request-and-validation process. You choose an available subdomain, configure nameservers, submit the request, and wait for human validation. Approval is not instant.
This is not the same as registering a normal .com, .org, or country-code domain. You must supply or arrange nameserver service, understand DNS delegation, and follow EU.org’s policies. Its policy is mainly oriented toward nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations and individuals; commercial sites are strongly encouraged to use an ICANN-accredited registrar except as a last resort.
EU.org may suit an experienced user who needs a stable delegated namespace and understands DNS. It is less suitable for a business that needs conventional ownership, simple support, or a widely recognized commercial domain.
What is not a free domain
Cloudflare Registrar
Cloudflare Registrar is an at-cost registration service, not a free-domain service. Cloudflare says it charges the registry and applicable ICANN costs without adding its own markup. That can be inexpensive, but you still pay the registration fee.
Cloudflare’s free DNS and SSL services are separate. They can help operate a domain you already own; they do not eliminate the cost of registering that domain.
Amazon Route 53
Amazon Route 53 also charges for domain registration. AWS documentation describes registration fees based on the top-level domain and generally requires registration for at least one year. Route 53 may be useful if your infrastructure is already on AWS, but it should not be presented as a free-domain provider.
Free SSL, DNS, hosting, or domain search
A free SSL certificate encrypts traffic; free DNS hosting answers DNS queries; free web hosting stores or serves site files; and a domain-search tool only checks availability. None of those services gives you registration ownership of a custom domain.

Ownership and renewal checklist
Before accepting any free-domain offer, answer each question:
- Is this a registered domain or a platform subdomain?
- Whose name is listed as the registrant?
- Who controls the registrar account, recovery email, and two-factor authentication?
- Is the $0 price limited to the first year?
- What is the exact renewal price, including applicable taxes or add-ons?
- Is auto-renew enabled, and how can it be disabled?
- Can you transfer the domain to another registrar?
- Does canceling the website plan cancel the domain or change its price?
- Are privacy protection, DNS management, email, and SSL included?
- Are there student, nonprofit, country, age, school, or extension restrictions?
- If a sponsor controls the account, what happens if the sponsorship ends?
How to avoid losing the address
- Use an account you control. Do not register a valuable domain with an employee’s personal email or an outside designer’s account.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Keep recovery codes in a secure location.
- Record the renewal date. A free first year still has an expiration date.
- Save DNS records. Keep copies of website, email, verification, and security records before changing providers.
- Check transfer restrictions. Some newly registered domains may have temporary transfer limitations, and promotional terms may impose additional conditions.
- Separate domain and hosting decisions where possible. A domain should ideally remain recoverable even if you change website builders.
Bottom line
“Free forever” usually means a platform subdomain or a delegated namespace—not independent ownership of a branded .com or .org. A custom domain is most often free only for a limited period, bundled with a paid annual website plan, or paid for by a student program or nonprofit sponsor.
For a personal project, start with GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel, or Wix’s free address. For a business or professional organization, compare the complete two-year cost, renewal terms, transferability, and account control before choosing. If none of the eligibility-based routes fits, paying for a conventional domain is usually the clearest and most portable solution.
