To make websites see a China-geolocated IP while you are outside mainland China, use a VPN service that offers a China location. That is different from trying to reach blocked foreign services from inside mainland China: a China IP endpoint does not bypass the Great Firewall, and no provider claim here guarantees a VPN will work reliably inside the country.
Getting a China IP from outside mainland China
The documented approach is to connect through a VPN location advertised as China. The location can be virtual: its label does not establish that the VPN hardware is physically in mainland China. The provider examples below describe advertised locations and setup, not independently tested access to any particular Chinese website.
| Service | China location and access | Physical routing and address type | What the information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its China Smart Routing location was added on September 3, 2026. A paid plan is required to use the China IP, according to its China IP page and release notes. | Proton’s Smart Routing documentation lists Hong Kong as the physical location used for China. This is a China-geolocated location, not evidence of a server physically in mainland China. | Proton documents the location and paid-plan requirement. It does not guarantee access to a particular Chinese service. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | PIA advertises a China IP that can be selected in its app. Its China IP page says the offered addresses are shared, not dedicated. | PIA describes the location as virtual. Its support location map identifies Beijing as routing through Singapore; that means the Beijing label does not establish physical presence in mainland China. | PIA documents a shared China IP offering. The available information does not establish that it will work with any particular Chinese service. |
These details help distinguish a China location label from physical server location and a shared address from a dedicated one. They do not provide a sound basis for ranking speed, uptime, residential-IP status, streaming success, or resistance to a website’s VPN blocks. Actual access can vary with the account, provider, your location, and the third-party site.
Basic setup from abroad
- Check the provider’s current location and plan details. For Proton, the China IP requires a paid plan; for PIA, the China IP offering is shared.
- Install the provider’s app and sign in.
- In the app’s location list, select its China location or China Smart Routing location, then connect.
- Open the site or service you need and check whether it accepts the connection. A displayed China location does not guarantee that the site will grant access.
Getting a China IP is not the same as bypassing the Great Firewall
If you are outside China and want a website to see a China-geolocated IP, a China VPN location addresses that goal. If you are inside mainland China and want to connect to foreign services that are blocked there, you have a different connectivity problem. Connecting to a China endpoint does not itself provide a route to blocked foreign services.

Proton says it cannot guarantee reliable operation in mainland China. Its guidance describes DNS filtering, IP blocking, and deep packet inspection as methods used to detect and block VPN connections, and notes that blocking methods change. Treat a provider’s China location advertisement as separate from a promise that its service will work from inside the country.
Proton’s preparation advice for travel
For readers considering Proton before travel, the company recommends downloading, configuring, and testing the app before arriving. If a connection is blocked, its China support guidance suggests enabling alternative routing, trying Stealth, and testing nearby or other international server locations. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not a guarantee of access.

What official rules say about VPNs and cross-border connectivity
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued a 2017 notice stating that, without approval from telecommunications authorities, organizations may not establish or rent dedicated lines—including VPNs—or other channels to conduct cross-border business operations. The notice addresses cross-border commercial activity and provider or network access regulation; it should not be expanded into a claim that every personal VPN use in every circumstance is categorically illegal. Read the MIIT notice hosted by the Cyberspace Administration of China.
In a clarification, MIIT said the notice targets unauthorized cross-border telecommunications business by operators or entities without the relevant approvals. It said foreign-trade and multinational enterprises needing cross-border connectivity for office use may rent lines from telecommunications operators legally authorized to establish international communications gateways. Businesses should use authorized providers and seek advice about their specific arrangement. See the MIIT clarification hosted by Guangdong Communications Administration.

Choose by your actual destination and use case
- You are outside mainland China and need a China-geolocated IP: look for a provider that currently documents a China location, then check whether access is paid, virtual, shared, or dedicated.
- You are travelling to mainland China and need foreign connectivity: do not assume a China IP location solves the problem. Proton advises setting up and testing before travel, but says it cannot guarantee reliable operation inside China.
- You need connectivity for a company’s cross-border office operations: distinguish commercial network arrangements from ordinary consumer use and consult an authorized telecommunications operator about the applicable requirements.
