To get a server with BMAD preinstalled, choose BMAD under Software/Application during Bluehost’s Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) checkout, then connect to the provisioned server over SSH, configure an Anthropic API key, and initialize a project. This guide covers that Bluehost image workflow; installing BMAD into an existing project uses a separate CLI process.
Choose between a preconfigured server and a project install
The Bluehost VDS image is for people who want a provider-provisioned, command-line development environment and are prepared to use SSH and manage server-level access. The image’s documentation describes it as a developer playground, not a production service.
If you already have a development environment and only need BMAD in a project, use the framework’s general CLI installation instead. That route does not provision a server or configure Bluehost’s image.

Order a Bluehost VDS with BMAD
- Open Bluehost’s VDS order flow and review the currently available Standard and High Performance plans.
- Configure the available location and hardware options, then open the Software/Application selection during checkout.
- Select BMAD, confirm the selection, and complete checkout after checking the current total and billing terms. Bluehost says it selects the operating system for the chosen application and permits one application per purchase.
BMAD may also be installed manually after purchase, according to Bluehost’s installation guide. The guide says BMAD will not appear as an available application if the selected plan fails its minimum requirements, but it does not publish BMAD-specific hardware minimums in the surfaced instructions. Confirm eligibility in the order flow rather than assuming a plan qualifies.

Log in to the provisioned server over SSH
- In the Bluehost Portal, find the new server and reset its root password.
- From a terminal on your computer, connect using the server address:
ssh root@your_server_ip. Replaceyour_server_ipwith the server’s actual address and enter the root password when prompted.
The documented image is command-line-only; it does not provide a web GUI. Its supporting information describes SSH-only access, no HTTP or HTTPS services, and UFW configured with port 22 open. These details apply to the described Bluehost image, not to every BMAD installation or server.

Set the Anthropic API key and initialize a project
- On first login, run
bash /opt/bmad/setup-env.shand follow the prompts to setANTHROPIC_API_KEY. The image documentation also says you can edit/etc/bmad/.envto configure the key. - Initialize a project with
bmad-init project-name [quick|standard|enterprise]. Replaceproject-namewith a name for your project, and choose one of the listed tracks. - Work with the project under
/srv/bmad-projects/, the directory Bluehost identifies for BMAD project data.
The API key is not baked into the image. Bluehost says /etc/bmad/.env is root-only, so keep the key private and avoid copying it into shared project files or public repositories.

Install BMAD in an existing project instead
For a project on an existing development environment, the BMAD-METHOD repository README gives this installation command:
npx bmad-method installThe README lists Node.js v20 or higher as a prerequisite. Its CLI also includes npx bmad-method list and npx bmad-method status. Repository instructions can change, so check the README for current requirements and commands before installing.

This project-level route does not provide the Bluehost VDS, its SSH access, or the image’s server configuration. Conversely, the preconfigured image workflow is specific to Bluehost’s documented offering; the available evidence does not establish that other providers offer the same image or provisioning process.
