Most Xfinity Gateways already broadcast on 2.4 GHz, so you usually do not need to add a radio or replace your router. If a device will not connect, first try the existing WiFi name and password. If it specifically requires a separate 2.4 GHz network name, you may be able to split the bands in the Xfinity app; availability depends on your gateway, automatic WiFi management, and whether Xfinity WiFi Extenders are installed.
Do you need to add 2.4 GHz to your Xfinity WiFi?
Usually, no. A 2.4 GHz band is a WiFi radio band, while a WiFi name (SSID) is the network name devices use to connect. A dual-band Xfinity Gateway can broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one shared name and password. In that setup, the gateway can choose a band for each device, and Xfinity recommends keeping one name and password across the bands. A separate 2.4 GHz name is a configuration choice, not a new radio you need to install. Xfinity’s WiFi name and password instructions explain the available naming choice.
Try connecting the device to your usual WiFi name and password first. Create a distinct 2.4 GHz name only if the device’s setup process requires you to select that band explicitly.

How to give the 2.4 GHz band a separate name in the Xfinity app
- Open the Xfinity app and sign in.
- Open WiFi, then select WiFi details.
- Choose Edit WiFi settings.
- Look for the option to use different names and passwords for the gateway’s broadcast bands. If it appears, assign the 2.4 GHz band a distinct name and save the change. App wording can vary as the interface changes.
After changing the network name or password, devices may need to reconnect. Use the new details when connecting the device that prompted the change, and update other affected devices as needed. Xfinity notes that devices may need to reconnect after WiFi details are changed: Xfinity WiFi Extender support.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Why the separate-band option may be missing
- Xfinity WiFi Extenders are installed: Xfinity requires extenders to use one shared WiFi name and password, so separate names are not compatible with that setup. The gateway can still use its available bands. See Xfinity’s extender requirements.
- WiFi settings are managed automatically: Xfinity says separate band naming may be unavailable when advanced WiFi settings are being managed automatically.
- Your gateway model exposes different controls: Options vary by gateway generation and setup. Check the model before trying another settings route.
Xfinity’s instructions describe the band-naming option and its availability in the app: WiFi name and password settings. Do not assume that removing an extender or using another menu will make band splitting available; Xfinity’s supported extender setup calls for one shared name and password.
Where to find advanced WiFi band settings by gateway model
If you need to inspect advanced settings rather than simply rename the bands, Xfinity’s documented controls depend on the gateway:

| Gateway or setup | Documented route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| XB2 | Admin Tool at 10.0.0.1 while connected to your home network | Xfinity directs XB2 users to the Admin Tool for advanced WiFi settings. |
| XB3 without extenders | Xfinity app: WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Advanced settings > WiFi bands | Xfinity says advanced WiFi settings can be managed in the app for this configuration. |
| XB6 and newer | Check the app and gateway settings for the controls Xfinity exposes | Advanced settings may be managed automatically, leaving some controls unavailable in both the app and Admin Tool. |
These are model- and setup-specific paths, not a universal way to force a band change. Xfinity’s channel and mode guidance describes the differences: advanced WiFi settings by gateway. The Admin Tool address is 10.0.0.1; using it does not override controls Xfinity makes unavailable on newer gateways.
What to check if a 2.4 GHz-only device still will not connect
- Try the existing WiFi name and password before changing network settings. The gateway may already provide 2.4 GHz under that shared name.
- If the device setup explicitly requires a separate network name, check whether the Xfinity app offers band naming under WiFi > WiFi details > Edit WiFi settings.
- If that choice is absent, check whether Xfinity WiFi Extenders are on the network and identify the gateway model. Automatic management and model generation affect which settings are available.
- For advanced controls, use the documented route for your gateway model. If the setting remains unavailable, contact Xfinity support rather than relying on an Admin Tool workaround.
Xfinity’s model-specific guidance for advanced WiFi controls is available in its channel and mode settings instructions.
