Generate thumbnail candidates when a video is published, review the exact image that will be served, store the approved image as a stable rendition, and then attach its reference to the listing or video record. Do not rely on extracting a frame again every time someone views the listing: a poster frame is a distinct image representation, and the platform may support uploading one, selecting a frame by timecode, or both.
What the publishing pipeline should do
Treat poster generation as a publish-time media workflow, not a read-time side effect. The goal is to make the chosen still reproducible, reviewable, and independently addressable even if the video-processing service or source file later changes.
- Identify the source video. Keep its internal reference and the listing or video record it belongs to.
- Create a bounded set of candidates. Extract frames at selected timestamps, or use a provider’s timecode-based thumbnail operation. Limit the number of candidates so review and processing costs remain predictable.
- Normalize only under a defined policy. If you resize, crop, or convert a candidate, record the transformation rules. The resulting image—not just the extracted frame—is the output to review.
- Review the exact intended output. Apply the same content policy that governs other public listing media to the bytes you intend to serve.
- Store the approved rendition. Persist it at a stable object reference and verify that the stored object has the expected media type and digest.
- Commit the reference. Update the listing or media manifest only after storage verification succeeds.
Keep the source-video reference and candidate references internal unless the product has a reason to expose them. On reads, resolve the already-approved rendition; do not regenerate a poster from the video in the request path.
Choose a platform capability that matches the job
API support is platform-specific. Some APIs accept a custom image, some select a frame by timecode, and some expose a poster field in a commerce schema without establishing how the image is generated. Confirm the target API’s current version, authorization, account eligibility, media limits, quota, and propagation behavior before implementation.

Decide whether to select a frame or upload an image
Select by timecode when the source frame is suitable
A timecode operation is useful when a frame in the video already represents the listing well. Generate candidate timestamps first, inspect the resulting images, and record the selected timecode with the approved rendition. A timecode is a selection instruction; it is not a substitute for retaining or reviewing the final image.
Upload a custom image when the frame needs design work
Use an uploaded image when the poster needs a crop, title treatment, or other deliberate composition that cannot be obtained by selecting a source frame alone. Check the target endpoint’s supported formats and size limit, and ensure the uploaded bytes are the exact reviewed output.
Keep platform fields separate from your internal asset record
A platform’s poster or preview field may point to its own hosted image, while your system may need an internal approved rendition for reuse, audit, or recovery. Shopify’s separate previewImage and sources fields illustrate the distinction between the still and video sources; they do not, on their own, prescribe an asset-retention architecture.

Store and publish the approved rendition safely
Use an immutable or versioned object reference where possible. That gives the listing a stable target and helps prevent an approved image from silently changing when a candidate is regenerated or overwritten.
- Retain metadata that identifies the source video, chosen timecode if applicable, rendition format and dimensions, policy outcome, and object version or digest.
- After upload, verify the stored object’s media type and digest against the intended output before committing its reference.
- Make the publish action idempotent so retries do not create inconsistent records or point the listing at an unverified object.
- Update the listing or manifest only after the stored rendition is confirmed. If commit fails, retain enough job state to retry the commit without repeating successful extraction and review unnecessarily.
- Resolve the stored approved rendition on reads rather than extracting a new frame for each request.
These are architecture recommendations, not requirements imposed by the named platform APIs. They are especially useful when moderation applies to public media: reviewers need to approve the same image that visitors will receive.

Do not collapse every failure into “thumbnail unavailable.” Separate outcomes make retries safer and help operators identify whether the issue is media processing, policy, storage, or the platform API.

- Extraction failure: no candidate could be produced from the source video. Retry only when the cause is transient; otherwise return the job for source or processing correction.
- No acceptable candidate: extraction succeeded, but none of the bounded candidates is usable. Request a different source or a different selection rather than publishing an unreviewed fallback.
- Policy rejection: the intended output failed review. Do not attach its reference to the public listing.
- Storage failure: the approved image was not durably stored or its stored media type or digest did not verify. Do not commit the listing reference.
- Manifest or platform commit failure: the rendition exists, but the listing or remote record was not updated. Retry the commit idempotently and preserve the verified object.
Check API behavior before launch
The endpoint-specific differences matter operationally. A practical integration checklist is:

- Does the target accept an uploaded image, select a frame by timecode, or offer both?
- Which scopes, permissions, account eligibility rules, and resource identifiers are required?
- Which MIME types and maximum image sizes are accepted by the exact operation?
- What are the quota or rate-limit rules, and can the update take time to appear in delivery caches?
- Does the listing or media schema expose an explicit poster or preview-image field?
- Does your policy require storing and moderating the exact bytes that will be served?
For example, YouTube documents permission-related errors and an upload-rate-limit error, while api.video warns that CDN delivery can lag after a change. Treat these as reasons to handle authorization, retry timing, and propagation explicitly—not as behavior shared by every provider.
