To create the conventional retail barcode for a book in Adobe InDesign, use a script that generates an EAN-13 symbol from the book’s assigned ISBN-13. InDesign’s built-in QR Code feature creates a QR code, not the vertical-bar ISBN symbol. Validate the ISBN first, preserve the barcode’s proportions and clear space, then scan a print proof and compare the decoded digits with the assigned ISBN.
ISBN and barcode are not the same thing
An ISBN identifies a specific book or book-like product; the retail barcode is the graphic symbol that encodes that identifier. For books, that symbol is typically EAN-13. ISBN.org, the U.S. ISBN Agency, puts it plainly: “An ISBN is a number, not a bar code.” ISBN.org: About the ISBN Standard
InDesign’s QR Code generator does not create the conventional ISBN retail barcode. Entering an ISBN there produces a QR code, which is a different symbol with a different purpose. Adobe Community discussion
Confirm and validate the ISBN before generating bars
Use the ISBN assigned to that edition or format by its publisher or the appropriate national ISBN agency. ISBN agencies are designated by country, and ISBN.org cautions that an ISBN obtained from a non-official source may not correctly identify the publisher. If you have a legacy ISBN-10, do not convert it merely by adding “978” in front. The ISBN-13 check digit may differ, so use a proper conversion method or confirm the resulting number with the publisher or ISBN agency. ISBN.org: ISBN Conversion
A script should validate both the input and its check digit before drawing bars. It should also distinguish an ISBN from any number that happens to pass an EAN-13 checksum: a valid EAN-13 is not necessarily an assigned ISBN-13. ISBN eligibility depends on the publication. The International ISBN Agency gives examples of eligible and ineligible materials and advises publishers to ask their national ISBN agency when unsure. International ISBN Agency: What is an ISBN?

Choose a barcode-generation approach
A custom ExtendScript can automate barcode creation inside InDesign, but its behavior and compatibility depend on the particular script. A dedicated InDesign script is another option; alternatively, generate barcode artwork elsewhere and place it in the layout. The available documentation supports the following distinctions, not a general ranking of every product or service.

Adobe describes scripts as a way to automate document processing and extend InDesign’s capabilities. Adobe Developer: ExtendScript for InDesign For any third-party or custom script, test it in the exact InDesign version and operating environment used for production; the sources here do not establish that the title-matched custom script works with the 2026 release.

Run a script in InDesign

Obtain the script and follow its maintainer’s installation instructions. For example, Indiscripts’ instructions for its BookBarcode script say to put its JSXBIN file in a Scripts Panel folder. Those are product-specific directions, not a guarantee for every script or InDesign release. Indiscripts: BookBarcode documentation

Open the Scripts panel through Window > Automation > Scripts, as specified in the cited BookBarcode instructions.

Run the script according to its own prompts, entering the validated ISBN-13. If the script rejects the number, check for a typo, unsupported punctuation, an invalid digit count, or a failed check digit rather than bypassing validation.

Review the generated object in the layout. Confirm the encoded number and any human-readable digits against the assigned ISBN before proceeding.
Place and preserve the barcode in the cover layout
The International ISBN Agency says an ISBN should appear on a printed book’s copyright page or title page. If the book has no barcode, it advises placing the ISBN on the back cover or jacket, preferably at the lower right. International ISBN Agency: What is an ISBN?

Follow the publisher’s and printer’s current instructions for barcode location, size, delivery format, and any regional or distributor-specific requirements.

Keep the barcode’s proportions and quiet areas intact. Avoid stretching, cropping into the clear space, or adding effects that could interfere with scanning.

Use strong contrast and make sure the human-readable number is present and legible where the chosen artwork includes it.
The cited material does not establish one universal minimum size or print-grade requirement. Obtain those values from the printer or distribution partner rather than assuming a script’s dimensions are a production specification.

Some ISBN barcode workflows include a separate five-digit EAN-5 price add-on. The Adobe Community answer notes its use in some contexts, and the DTPTIPS article says its script can optionally add one. Neither establishes that EAN-5 is required everywhere. Ask the publisher, printer, or distributor whether a price add-on is appropriate for the intended territory and sales channel before including it.
Check the exported proof before delivery

Export a proof using the delivery settings required by the printer.

Scan the barcode from the exported proof, at its final intended size, with a barcode-reading app or handheld scanner. Adobe Community guidance recommends scanning and comparing the decoded number with the ISBN. Adobe Community discussion

Compare every decoded digit with the assigned ISBN, and inspect the human-readable digits, contrast, quiet areas, and placement in the cover design.

Complete the printer’s preflight as well. A successful scan checks basic readability and encoding; it does not replace production checks or guarantee acceptance by a printer or retailer.
