Minecraft does not generate extra network ports when you install a plugin. You obtain an unused port from your hosting panel or router, configure the plugin to listen on that port, allow the correct protocol through the firewall, and restart the server. For the common cases, Dynmap uses TCP port 8123 by default, Geyser uses UDP port 19132 by default, and a Velocity proxy listens on the address defined by its bind setting.
What an additional port actually is
A port is a numbered entry point on a server address. The IP address identifies the machine; the port identifies the service on that machine. A Minecraft Java server normally accepts game traffic on its main server port. A web map, Bedrock bridge, proxy listener, voice service, or query service may need a different entry point so that traffic can reach the correct process.

- Allocation or routing: your hosting provider assigns the port, or your router forwards it to the server’s internal address.
- Plugin configuration: the plugin is told which number and address to bind to.
- Firewall access: the operating system and any provider firewall allow the required protocol, either TCP or UDP.
If any layer is missing, the service can appear to start locally while players outside the machine cannot connect.

Choose and obtain the port before editing files
Hosted server: request an allocation
On a Pterodactyl-style panel, open the server’s network or allocations area and add an available allocation. The panel may show an IP and port pair, and some hosts require an administrator to assign it. For HTTP-based map plugins such as Dynmap or BlueMap, the allocation must permit the web traffic required by that service; a panel option describing an unfiltered or unrestricted port may be required. The exact label differs by host, so use the allocation’s stated protocol and restrictions rather than assuming every extra port behaves like the game port.
Record the complete address supplied by the panel. If the panel gives 203.0.113.20:8123, the number after the colon is the port you enter in the plugin. Do not change the allocation number in the plugin to a random value: a process listening on a number that the host has not routed will not be reachable from the Internet.
Self-hosted server: forward a port on the router
For a server at home or in a private data center, select an unused external port and create a port-forwarding rule to the machine running Minecraft. Set the internal destination address and the same service protocol that the plugin uses. Also permit that protocol in the machine’s firewall. A router rule that points to the wrong internal address, or a computer that changes address through DHCP, can break the service even when the plugin configuration is correct.
Check for collisions
Each process can bind a particular protocol and port only once on the same address. Make a list of ports already used by the Minecraft server, proxy, maps, voice chat, query service, and other applications. Two services cannot both listen on TCP 8123. TCP and UDP are separate protocol namespaces, so the same number can technically exist once for each protocol, but using distinct numbers is easier to document and less error-prone.
General procedure for adding a plugin port
- Identify the service and protocol. Read the plugin’s current configuration or startup log. Dynmap’s web server is TCP; Geyser’s Bedrock listener is UDP; Velocity’s proxy bind is TCP.
- Reserve an unused port. Obtain it from the host allocation panel or forward it on the router. Keep a written inventory of the number, protocol, plugin, and public address.
- Stop the server before editing. A stopped process avoids a configuration file being rewritten while you are changing it. Make a backup of the existing file.
- Change only the relevant setting. Preserve YAML indentation, TOML syntax, and the spelling of the key. Do not put a protocol prefix such as
http://in a numeric port field. - Save and start the server. Watch the console for a bind error or a success message showing the chosen address and port.
- Open the matching firewall path. Permit TCP or UDP as appropriate in the host firewall, operating-system firewall, router, and any cloud security group.
- Test from an external network. A test performed on the same machine can succeed even when the provider or router is blocking outside traffic. Use a separate connection where possible.
- Document the result. Record the file path, configured value, public address, protocol, and the date so a future plugin update can be checked against it.

Defaults can change between plugin releases and server platforms. Treat the values above as the starting points for the versions that generated those files, not as a guarantee that every current build uses the same defaults.
Configure Dynmap’s web port
File and key
For a plugin installation, open plugins/dynmap/configuration.txt. A mod installation uses dynmap/configuration.txt. Set the webserver-port value to the allocated TCP port. For example:

webserver-port: 8123If your host assigned 28080 instead, use that number in the file and expose TCP 28080 at the host or router. Do not expose 8123 merely because it is Dynmap’s default when the allocation is different.
Restart and read the log
Restart the server after saving. A successful startup produces a line in the Dynmap console in this form:
[dynmap] Web server started on address 0.0.0.0:8123The number in the message should match your configured port. If it reports the old number, the wrong file was edited, the server did not reload, or a configuration-generation step restored the previous value. If it reports that the address is already in use, select another allocated port and update the routing rule as well.
Reach the map
Use the host’s public address and the configured port in a browser, for example http://203.0.113.20:28080. A browser failure does not by itself prove Dynmap is misconfigured: confirm first that the panel allocation is attached to this server and that TCP traffic is permitted through every firewall layer.

Configure Geyser’s Bedrock port
Find the platform-specific file
Geyser’s configuration path depends on the server platform:
- Spigot or Paper:

In the bedrock section, set the listener’s port. The default is UDP 19132. A simplified example is:

port: 19132Keep the indentation produced by Geyser. YAML treats indentation as structure; moving port outside the bedrock section can make the value ineffective or cause a configuration error.
Keep the Bedrock port separate from other UDP services
Bedrock traffic uses UDP. It cannot share the same UDP port with a voice-chat service, query listener, or another Geyser instance. TCP and UDP are different protocols, but a second UDP listener on the same address and number will still collide. Reserve one UDP allocation for each service that needs one.

Geyser can be configured with clone-remote-port. When that option is enabled, Geyser overwrites its Bedrock port with the Java server’s port each time it starts. If you need a fixed, separate Bedrock port, leave this option disabled; otherwise a manually selected value may appear to change after every restart.
Test the listener
After restarting, run Geyser’s console test command with the public address and allocated UDP port:
geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>Replace both placeholders with real values. The command checks reachability of the Bedrock endpoint, but a successful result still depends on the Bedrock client using the same public address and port and on the port remaining assigned to this server.
Configure a Velocity proxy listener
Set the proxy bind address
Velocity reads its listener from velocity.toml. The bind value contains an address and port, such as:

bind = "0.0.0.0:25577"0.0.0.0 tells the proxy to listen on all local interfaces. Use the address form required by your deployment if the proxy must listen on one specific interface. The port in the example is not a universal requirement; replace it with the TCP allocation assigned to the proxy.
Configure the backend trust relationship
Changing the proxy’s port is only one part of a Velocity network. Each backend Paper server also needs the Velocity forwarding configuration and a shared secret in its paper-global.yml velocity block. That secret is separate from the network port: a reachable listener with mismatched forwarding settings can still reject or mishandle connections. Keep the secret identical where required and do not publish it.
Expose only the proxy to players
In a typical proxy layout, players connect to the Velocity listener, while backend servers accept connections only from the proxy or a private network. Allocating a new public port for every backend is not automatically necessary for player access. It is necessary only when a backend service, such as a map or Bedrock listener, must be reached directly and the host routes that service.
BlueMap and Plan: verify before assigning a number
BlueMap
A commonly referenced location for BlueMap is plugins/BlueMap/webserver.conf with a port key. The exact default and generated structure are not established here, so open the file created by the installed version and follow its comments. Confirm the protocol expected by that build before creating a firewall rule. Do not assume that a value copied from Dynmap applies to BlueMap.

The location and name of Plan’s web-port setting are not established in this guide. Use the configuration generated by your installed Plan version or its current documentation. If the file does not expose a web listener, assigning a port in the host panel alone will not create one.

- Hosting allocation: verify that the IP and port are attached to the correct server and that the allocation permits the intended traffic.
- Cloud or provider firewall: add an inbound rule for the exact port and protocol if the provider supplies one.
- Operating-system firewall: allow the service on the machine that runs Minecraft. A TCP rule does not permit UDP, and a UDP rule does not permit TCP.
- Home router: forward the external port to the server’s stable internal address. Check whether the router supports hairpin access; testing from inside the same LAN may not work even when Internet access does.
- Application bind address: confirm that the plugin listens on an interface reachable from the route. A service bound only to loopback is available locally, not through the public address.
Use the narrowest source ranges practical for administration and private services. A public map or Bedrock listener must be reachable by its intended users, but management panels and backend proxy ports should not be exposed merely because another plugin needs an allocation.
Diagnose a port that does not work
The console shows the old port
- Check that you edited the active platform-specific file, not a backup or a file for another server type.
- Confirm the key spelling and indentation.
- Stop and start the server rather than relying on a reload command that may not recreate the listener.
- Check whether a setting such as Geyser’s
clone-remote-portintentionally rewrites the value.
The service says “address already in use”
Another process already owns that protocol-and-port pair. Identify the existing service from your host’s process or allocation list, then choose a different assigned port. Changing only the plugin file is insufficient if the host or router still forwards the old number.
It works locally but not from the Internet
This pattern points to routing or filtering rather than the plugin itself. Recheck the provider allocation, public IP, router destination, cloud firewall, operating-system firewall, and protocol. For a UDP service such as Geyser, testing with a TCP-only tool gives a misleading result; use Geyser’s connection test and an actual Bedrock client.
The browser reaches a different service
The port may be forwarded to another machine, or a reverse proxy may already own it. Verify the destination address and inspect the startup log on the Minecraft host. A successful HTTP response is not proof that Dynmap is the process answering.
Connections fail after a restart
Check whether the host reallocates ports, the router’s internal address changed, or the plugin regenerated its configuration. Keep backups and an inventory of the intended allocation so you can compare the live file with the known-good value.
Planning several plugins on one server
Count allocations by service, not by Minecraft installation. A single backend with Dynmap and Geyser normally needs one TCP port for the map and one UDP port for Bedrock, in addition to whatever port carries Java traffic. A Velocity network may add a proxy TCP listener, while each server’s map or Bedrock service adds its own listener. The exact total depends on which services are enabled and whether they are exposed publicly.

Use a simple inventory such as “TCP 28080 — Dynmap — server A” and “UDP 19133 — Geyser — server A.” This prevents accidentally assigning the same UDP number to voice chat and Bedrock or forwarding a map port to the wrong backend.
Security and maintenance considerations
- Expose only services that users need. An unused allocation should remain closed at the firewall.
- Do not publish Velocity forwarding secrets or place them in screenshots and support posts.
- Prefer a stable internal address for a self-hosted machine so router forwarding does not silently follow another device.
- Back up configuration files before plugin upgrades. Generated formats and defaults can change, and an upgrade may recreate a file with new keys.
- When changing a port, update the host allocation, router rule, firewall rule, bookmarks, client instructions, and monitoring checks together.
- Record whether a number is TCP or UDP. The number alone is not a complete endpoint.
Version-change checklist
Plugin defaults and paths are version-sensitive. Before applying an old tutorial to a new server, verify:
- The plugin name and platform match the file you are editing.
- The generated configuration still contains the key described here.
- The startup log reports the intended address and protocol.
- The host still offers the allocation and has not changed its filtering policy.
- The firewall rule uses the same protocol as the listener.
- A test from outside the server confirms the public endpoint.
If those checks pass, the process is complete: the host or router supplies the route, the plugin owns the listener, and the firewall permits the right traffic.
