Generate a Garry’s Mod Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) at Steam’s Game Server Account Management page by entering App ID 4000, adding a memo, and creating the account. Put the resulting token in your hosting panel’s GSLT or Steam Account Token field—or pass it to a self-managed server with +sv_setsteamaccount—then restart the server.
Your Steam account must own Garry’s Mod, have a qualifying registered phone number, and not be limited, community banned, locked, or otherwise banned from creating game-server accounts. Create a separate token for every server, and treat each token as a password.

What a GSLT does on a Garry’s Mod server
A GSLT is a Steam Game Server Login Token. A dedicated Garry’s Mod server uses it to authenticate with Steam as a persistent game-server account instead of relying only on the Steam account you use interactively. Facepunch’s Garry’s Mod documentation says servers should have a GSLT following the May 2020 update.
The token identifies the server account to Steam. It is not a player password, an RCON password, or a replacement for your server’s normal authentication settings. The token is used at startup, so changing it in a panel or launch command normally requires a server restart before Steam can see the new value.

Use one token for one server
Create a separate GSLT for each Garry’s Mod server. The memo you enter during creation is only a label for your own reference; it does not authenticate the server and does not make one token safe to reuse across multiple instances. Use memos that identify the instance, such as a role-play server, test server, or a location, without putting the secret token itself in the memo.
Requirements before you create the token
Steam applies account-level checks before it allows a persistent game-server account to be created. Confirm these conditions first so you can distinguish a setup mistake from an eligibility problem.

These checks are separate. Owning Garry’s Mod does not by itself satisfy the phone or account-standing requirements. If Steam reports that the phone is not qualified, changing the App ID will not solve that particular error.

Open Steam’s Game Server Account Management page
Sign in at https://steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers. Use the Steam account that owns Garry’s Mod and will remain responsible for the server tokens. If Steam asks you to sign in again, complete that sign-in before entering any values.

Enter Garry’s Mod’s App ID
In the App ID field, enter 4000. Guides consistently identify 4000 as Garry’s Mod’s App ID. The live Steam page should display the App ID on the entry after creation; verify that it shows 4000 before using the token. If the page displays a different App ID, do not attach that token to a Garry’s Mod server—delete the incorrect entry and create a new one with 4000.

Add a descriptive memo
Enter a memo that tells you which instance the token belongs to. For example, distinguish a public production server from a private test server or from separate server instances on the same machine. The memo is for your reference only, so it can be changed in your own naming scheme without affecting server authentication.

Create the game-server account
Click the page’s Create button. Steam reloads the page and adds an entry containing the memo, the login token, and the App ID associated with that token. A newly created token is visible at this point, so copy it before navigating away.

Store the token securely
Save the copied value in the password or secret-management system you use for server administration. Do not post it in a support forum, paste it into a public configuration repository, or include it in screenshots. Anyone who obtains the token may be able to use it as the server’s Steam credential.

Put the GSLT into your server configuration
The exact control depends on how you run Garry’s Mod. Hosting panels use different labels and layouts, while a self-managed server receives the token as a startup parameter.
Hosted server panels
- Stop the server if your provider requires it before changing startup settings. Some panels let you edit startup variables while the server is running but do not apply them until the next restart.
- Open the server’s startup, launch-parameters, or general settings page.
- Find the field labelled GSLT, Steam Account Token, or a similar name. The wording and location vary by host, so search the panel’s startup settings rather than assuming the field is under player or workshop options.
- Paste the complete token into that field. Do not add quotation marks, spaces, or explanatory text unless the panel specifically instructs you to do so.
- Save the setting and restart the server. A save without a restart leaves the running process using its old startup environment.
Self-managed or command-line servers
Add the token to the server’s launch command with the +sv_setsteamaccount parameter. Replace the example value with the token you copied:
+sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_GSLT_HEREKeep the parameter in the same startup configuration that launches the dedicated server, then restart that process. Do not put the literal text YOUR_GSLT_HERE into production; it is only a placeholder showing where the secret value goes.
Confirm that Steam received it
After the restart, check the server’s startup output and the public server list. A correctly configured server should be able to appear in the public list. If it does not, work through the checks in the troubleshooting section instead of immediately creating many replacement tokens.

Why the server may still be missing from the public list
A missing listing does not prove that the token itself is invalid. Check the complete path from Steam entry to running process.
- App ID: Confirm that the Steam entry was created for App ID 4000 and that you did not copy a token belonging to another game-server account.
- Exact token: Compare the value in the panel or launch command with the value displayed by Steam. Re-copy it if necessary; an omitted character is enough to prevent authentication.
- Correct server instance: If the machine runs multiple Garry’s Mod instances, verify that the token was added to the startup settings for the intended instance, not to a different service.
- Restart: Stop and start the dedicated server after saving the value. A panel’s saved setting is not proof that the already-running process loaded it.
- Public-list timing: Check again after the restart and inspect the server’s startup output for authentication-related messages before changing other settings.
Resolve Steam error 24
Error 24 is ambiguous. Reports in a Counter-Strike 2 community thread associate it with two different conditions: Steam may reject the phone number as unqualified, or the account may be banned from creating persistent game-server accounts. Treat the message as an eligibility problem first, not as evidence that App ID 4000 is wrong.
When the phone number is not qualified
- Review the phone number associated with the Steam account and confirm that it is registered to that account.
- If Steam still says the number is not qualified, users in the cited community discussion reported trying a different number associated with the account.
- If the number appears valid but Steam continues to return error 24, contact Steam Support and describe the exact error. Support can determine whether the account or number is blocked; repeatedly submitting new tokens will not change an account-level restriction.
When the account is banned from creating tokens
Error 24 can also indicate a ban on creating game-server accounts. In that case, adding a phone number or changing the memo will not restore eligibility. Contact Steam Support if the account meets the ordinary requirements but the management page continues to reject creation.

Changing the Steam account password—by any method—invalidates all active GSLTs for that account. This affects every server using a token from the account, not just the server whose settings you were editing.

If you change the password, return to the management page and create replacement tokens as needed. Update each hosted-panel field or startup command with its new token, then restart every affected server. Plan this as a coordinated maintenance task when one Steam account serves several instances.
Revoke a leaked token and recover safely
Consider a GSLT compromised if it appears in a public log, repository, screenshot, chat message, or ticket visible to people who should not have it. Do not wait to see whether someone uses it.

- Delete or revoke that token immediately.
- Create a new token for the same server with App ID 4000 and a clear memo.
- Replace the value in the hosting panel or
+sv_setsteamaccountlaunch configuration. - Restart the server and remove the exposed value from stored logs, scripts, tickets, and repositories where you control the content.
A memo helps you identify which credential to revoke, but it does not protect the credential. Protect the token itself with the same care as any other server secret.
Managing several Garry’s Mod servers
Keep an inventory
Maintain a private list that maps each server instance to its Steam memo, host or machine, and current configuration location. The inventory should contain enough information to rotate a token during an outage without placing the token in ordinary notes or chat.
Do not reuse one token as a shortcut
The documented workflow calls for one GSLT per server. Separate credentials let you identify and revoke one instance without disrupting the others. Reusing a token also makes it harder to determine which server is responsible when a credential is exposed or invalidated.
Account for the account-wide limit
The retrieved Valve snippet says an account may create up to 1,000 game-server accounts, but that figure is not dated in the snippet. Treat it as a planning reference rather than a guarantee: confirm the current allowance on the live Steam page before designing a large fleet around it.

Practical pre-launch checklist
- Steam account owns Garry’s Mod and has no community, lock, limit, or game-server-account restriction.
- A qualifying phone number is registered to the account.
- The Steam management entry uses App ID 4000.
- The memo identifies exactly one server.
- The token was copied privately and stored as a secret.
- The token was entered in the panel’s GSLT or Steam Account Token field, or supplied with
+sv_setsteamaccount. - The server was restarted after the change.
- The public list and startup output were checked.
- Any password change or suspected leak has triggered token replacement on every affected server.
