Windows can create a battery health report as an HTML file, but the report is generated from Command Prompt rather than the Settings app. It includes the battery’s design and current full-charge capacity, recent charging and discharging activity, and longer-term usage data.
The same powercfg command works on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Use an elevated Command Prompt, then open the file location reported by Windows.
Generate the report with Command Prompt
- Select Start and type Command prompt.
- Press and hold—or right-click—Command prompt, then select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when the User Account Control prompt appears.
- Enter this command exactly and press Enter:
powercfg /batteryreport
Use the spelling powercfg. A commonly repeated version, Powerfg, is incorrect.

Open the Windows battery report
- Read the saved-file path shown in Command Prompt after the command completes.
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to that path.
- Double-click the HTML file. It should open in your default web browser.
If the path is difficult to read, run the command again with a destination you choose. Saving directly to the desktop is usually easier:
powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:UsersYourNameDesktopbatteryreport.html"Replace YourName with your Windows account folder name. The /output option sets both the report’s filename and its location. The destination must exist and be writable.
What the report tells you
Microsoft describes the report as a record of battery-usage characteristics over the lifetime of the system. It provides technical information and estimated capacity, rather than a manufacturer-independent “Good” or “Bad” health score.
These are the most useful sections to check:

Compare design capacity with full-charge capacity
Design capacity is the amount of energy the battery was designed to hold when new. Full-charge capacity is Windows’ current estimate of how much the battery can hold when charged fully.
A simple estimate of remaining capacity is:
(Full-charge capacity ÷ Design capacity) × 100For example, if the design capacity is 50,000 mWh and the current full-charge capacity is 40,000 mWh:

(40,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 80%This is an estimate, not a definitive laboratory measurement. Battery readings can vary with temperature, firmware, calibration, charging behavior, and the accuracy of the battery controller. A reduced capacity generally means shorter runtime, but it does not by itself prove that the battery is unsafe.
Use a custom reporting period
The standard command creates a report using the available battery information. Microsoft also documents an optional duration argument:

The current Microsoft command reference documents the syntax but does not state a universal 14-day maximum, so avoid relying on that frequently repeated limitation.
You can combine a duration with a custom output path:
powercfg /batteryreport /duration 4 /output "C:UsersYourNameDesktopbatteryreport.html"Generate an XML version

powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:UsersYourNameDesktopbatteryreport.xml" /xmlThe ordinary command produces an HTML report. Use the XML form only when you specifically need machine-readable output.
Battery report versus Battery usage in Settings
The Settings page is useful for seeing which apps are using battery power, but it is not the generator for the detailed HTML health report.
To view app and level information:
Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage
On Windows 10, the same general path is available through Start > Settings > System > Battery, where you can view battery level changes and app usage. The Settings view and the powercfg /batteryreport HTML file serve different purposes:

Fix common battery-report problems
“Access is denied” or the report is not created
Close the window and start Command Prompt again with Run as administrator. Also check that the output directory exists and that your account can write to it. A desktop path is a practical test:

powercfg /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopbatteryreport.html"If this succeeds, the problem was likely the original location rather than the command itself.
You cannot find the HTML file
Use the exact path printed when the command completes. If you used a custom output path, paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar. You can also generate a new copy directly on the desktop with the command above.
The command is not recognized
Check that the command is spelled powercfg, with no extra characters:
powercfg /batteryreportRun it in Command Prompt rather than entering it into a browser search box or the File Explorer address bar.

The report has little or no useful information
The report depends on battery-usage and capacity data exposed to Windows. It may be incomplete or unavailable if the device has little or no recorded battery activity, has no battery, or its battery interface or firmware does not provide usable data. Different computers may therefore show different fields.

The capacity seems wrong
Capacity is an estimate supplied through the system’s battery and firmware interface. Install available manufacturer firmware and Windows updates, then compare readings over time rather than treating one report as an exact measurement. If the laptop shuts down unexpectedly, charges abnormally, or reports a physically damaged battery, arrange a hardware inspection.

A battery report cannot make an unsafe battery safe. If the battery is visibly swollen or has expanded beyond the device’s enclosure, stop using the device immediately. Do not press on the case, puncture the battery, or continue charging it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for service or safe disposal.

Does the battery health report work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. The powercfg /batteryreport command is documented generically for Windows, and it can be used on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s current step-by-step support instructions are specifically labeled for Windows 11.
Where is the battery report saved?
Command Prompt prints the saved file location when the command finishes. The location is not guaranteed to be a fixed folder, so use the path shown there. You can choose a known location with the /output option.
What is a good battery health percentage?
There is no universal Windows pass/fail threshold. Divide full-charge capacity by design capacity and multiply by 100 for an estimate. A lower result indicates reduced runtime, but the decision to replace a battery should also consider unexpected shutdowns, charging behavior, physical condition, and the manufacturer’s guidance.
Why does Windows not show a simple battery health score?
The report provides estimated capacity and usage information, not a manufacturer-independent physical diagnostic. Battery condition also depends on factors such as temperature, firmware, calibration, and safety-related physical damage.
Can I generate a battery report without administrator access?
Microsoft’s documented procedure uses an elevated Command Prompt. Running it as administrator also avoids many output-permission problems, especially when saving outside your user profile.
