If your PS5 storage is full, start with Settings > Storage. Delete an unplayed game or app, or use a game’s Customize option to remove unused add-ons or portions. If you want to keep the installation, move it to USB extended storage; if you need PS5 games to remain playable without copying them back, install a compatible M.2 SSD. Your choice depends on whether you need space immediately, an archive, or permanently playable capacity.
How do I free up space on my PS5?
Use the console’s storage screen before deleting anything. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage. The categories show how console capacity is being used by games and apps, media, and saved data. This lets you identify the largest removable items instead of guessing.
Check the free-space figure before you begin and again after each change. Storage totals can differ between games because updates, add-ons, language packs, and optional portions are installed separately. Do not assume that deleting an item of a particular type always frees a fixed amount.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
For a quick result, sort your attention toward games you have not opened recently and applications you no longer use. Avoid deleting a title in the middle of a transfer or update, and wait for the console to finish any operation before starting a new download.
Check Customize before deleting an entire game
Some games show Customize beside the title in the Games and Apps list. When available, this can expose separate add-ons, language packs, campaign portions, or other installed components that you no longer use. Remove only the components you recognize. Not every game supports this control, and the amount recovered varies with the game’s installed content, so there is no guaranteed space saving for a particular item.
This is especially useful when you want to keep the part of a game you are currently playing. Read the component names carefully: an optional-looking item may still be needed for a mode, language, or expansion you plan to use. If Customize is not offered, the game may only be removable as a complete installation.
How to make space on your PS5 console without buying hardware
Work through the list from largest, least-used installation to smallest. Keep games you are actively playing, and remove duplicate applications or media you have already backed up. Do not delete saved data simply because it appears in the storage overview: save files are separate from the game installation and deleting them can remove progress.
- Use Games and Apps to remove complete installations or selected content exposed through Customize.
- Review media separately if screenshots and video clips are consuming substantial capacity.
- Check saved data as a separate category and preserve files that contain progress.
- Restart the download only after the storage screen shows enough free capacity; a game may also need temporary working space during installation.
A practical cleanup sequence is to remove one large, unwanted installation, return to the storage screen, and then reassess. This prevents deleting more than necessary. If you are close to the requirement, leave a little headroom for the installation process and its updates rather than aiming for an exact match with the advertised download size.
If you still need more room after removing unused content, choose between archiving to USB extended storage and adding an M.2 SSD. Those options solve different problems.
USB extended storage: keep a PS5 game archive
USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep game data available for faster transfer than downloading it again, but do not need every PS5 game immediately playable. PlayStation Support states: PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.
This is the central limitation to remember when comparing an external drive with an M.2 SSD.

USB is also a direct-play option for PS4 games. A mixed library can therefore use the drive for PS4 play while treating PS5 titles as archived installations. When you move a PS5 title, plan for the later copy-back time and for enough free space on the console or M.2 destination to hold the complete game.

| Requirement | Supported specification or limit |
|---|---|
| Interface speed | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster |
| Capacity | At least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB |
| Hub use | USB hubs cannot be used for the extended-storage connection |
| Concurrent drives | Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time |
These are platform requirements, not a guarantee that every drive in the range will work. Sony warns that compatibility is not guaranteed for all devices. Connect the drive directly to the PS5, not through a hub, and keep the console’s current system software and the drive’s own instructions in mind if the console does not recognize it.
Format a drive as extended storage
- Connect the compatible USB drive directly to the PS5.
- Follow the on-screen prompt to format it as USB extended storage, or open the storage settings and select the connected drive.
- Confirm the format only after backing up files you want to keep.
Formatting erases everything on the drive. Do not disconnect the drive or turn off the console while formatting is in progress. A drive formatted for extended storage is not the same as a drive formatted FAT or exFAT for saves and media, so choose the format according to the job and back up files before changing it.

Move an installed game to USB
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game, then press the Options button.
- Select Move Games and Apps and choose the USB extended-storage drive.
- Confirm the move and wait until the console reports completion before disconnecting the drive.
PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games can be stored there, but must be copied back to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before they can run. Moving a game therefore frees local space while preserving the installation, but it is not a way to play PS5 titles directly from an external drive.
When you are ready to play an archived PS5 game, connect the same drive and copy the title back. If the destination is full, clear sufficient console or M.2 capacity first. Do not treat an archive move as a backup of saved progress: the game files and saves are separate.
Remove the drive safely
Use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5 before unplugging it. Alternatively, wait until the PS5 is fully powered off. Disconnecting during a transfer can corrupt data. Never pull the cable while a move, copy, format, or download is still shown as active.
M.2 SSD: add storage from which PS5 games can run
A compatible M.2 SSD is the expansion route when you want additional PS5 capacity that remains playable without copying games back and forth. Sony says compatible M.2 expansion can provide up to 8 TB of additional capacity and supports storing, downloading, and playing PS5 and PS4 games, along with media applications. The 8 TB figure is the platform ceiling, not a recommendation that you need an 8 TB drive.
This is the better fit for a large, regularly played library. Unlike USB extended storage, the M.2 location can be selected for PS5 installations and does not impose the copy-back step each time you switch games. It is still an expansion device, not a substitute for checking the free-space requirement of each download.
Check compatibility before buying
M.2 drives are not interchangeable. Use Sony’s current, localized PS5 M.2 compatibility checklist before purchase. The exact requirements are specification-sensitive, including the drive type, physical dimensions, performance, and cooling clearance. Sony’s M.2 FAQ specifically says SATA M.2 SSDs are unsupported. A drive that fits the connector but fails another requirement may not work correctly.
- Verify that the complete drive, including any heatsink, fits the PS5 expansion bay.
- Use an M.2 model that meets Sony’s current speed and size requirements.
- Do not assume that a drive advertised as “M.2” is automatically compatible.
- Check the localized Sony requirements again when buying, because menu wording and specifications can change with system software.
Do not buy on capacity alone. A cheaper or larger drive is not a good choice if its interface, dimensions, cooling, or performance falls outside Sony’s requirements. No particular brand, model, price, stock status, or warranty should be assumed without checking the current listing and Sony’s checklist.

- DESIGNED FOR THE PS5 CONSOLE: Engineered to fit perfectly and easily into the PS5 console's SSD expansion slot for a quick and easy install.
- REVOLUTIONARY COOLING: Made from High-Quality CNC'd aluminum, the Sabrent Heatsink for the PS5 console was specifically designed to maximize cooling performance and simplify installation.
- UPGRADE YOUR CONSOLE! Rather than creating a heatsink that would only trap the heat in the metal cover, we designed a heatsink that replaces the native PS5 consoles cover. This allows for better cooling using the native fan as well as being a larger heatsink.
- INDUSTRIAL QUALITY: This SSD heatsink method also uses Sabrent's "Sandwich Design" which ensures even pressure throughout the SSD for efficient and consistent heat transfer unlike methods used by other brands.
- CONVENIENCE: Comes with an installation guide as well as screws and thermal tape for easy convenient installation.
Installation and formatting cautions
Sony’s installation guidance calls for a Phillips screwdriver and recommends discharging static electricity before opening the console. Incorrect installation, an unsuitable drive, or forced components can damage the console or SSD. After installation, the PS5 formats the M.2 drive; formatting removes all data on it. Back up anything stored on the drive before installing it.

Make sure the cover, spacer, and retaining screw are seated as instructed, and do not operate the console with a loose component. The drive must be formatted by the PS5 before it can hold installations.
Sony also states that all data for an individual game must reside in one location. The console cannot split one game’s files between the internal drive and M.2 storage. If a game is installed on M.2, its required game data must remain there.
What is the difference between M.2 SSD and USB extended storage?
| Need | Best-supported path | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Free space immediately without buying hardware | Delete a game or app, or remove selected content through Customize when offered | The installation may need to be downloaded again before you play |
| Keep a PS5 game archive | USB extended storage | PS5 games must be copied back before play |
| Keep more PS5 games installed and playable | Compatible M.2 SSD | It must meet Sony’s requirements and be installed and formatted correctly |
| Protect game progress | PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saves | A subscription is required, and cloud saves do not hold game installations |
The choice is therefore about behavior, not just headline capacity. USB extended storage is removable and suited to an archive, but PS5 games wait there until copied back. M.2 storage is installed inside the console and is intended for games you want ready to launch. Deleting is fastest and costs nothing, but requires a future redownload.
Save data, screenshots, and cloud storage are not game-installation space
Storage management separates installed games from saved data and media. Moving a save does not make the installed game disappear from console storage. Before clearing the saved-data category, identify whether the files contain progress you still need.
PlayStation Plus cloud saves
PlayStation Plus members can upload PS5 saves to cloud storage. Sony’s US storage information describes 100 GB of PlayStation Plus cloud storage; this is cloud capacity for supported data, not extra local capacity for downloading or installing games. Cloud-save storage requires PlayStation Plus. Uploading a save can protect progress before deleting a game, but it does not archive the game’s installation.
USB backups for PS4 saves and media
A USB drive formatted as FAT or exFAT, rather than as PS5 extended storage, can be used for PS4 save data and media files. Sony also supports copying PS5 screenshots and video clips to USB. Media files cannot be copied from USB back to PS5 console storage. Formatting a drive as extended storage and formatting it as FAT or exFAT are different operations, so choose the format based on what you need the drive to hold.
PlayStation App storage management
Sony’s US storage page describes storage management through the PlayStation App while the console is in rest mode. This can help you manage supported content remotely, but it does not create additional local game-installation capacity. Rest-mode management also depends on the console being configured to remain connected as required by the app.
What to do when a large download still will not start
- Return to Settings > Storage and confirm the free-space figure after each deletion or move.
- Check Games and Apps for another large installation or a Customize option that exposes removable components.
- If the game is archived on USB, remember that the PS5 needs room on console or M.2 storage to copy it back before playing.
- Check that the external drive is connected directly, meets the 250 GB–8 TB USB range, and is not connected through a hub.
- For an M.2 upgrade, verify the current Sony compatibility checklist and confirm that the drive was installed and formatted successfully.
- Keep the console powered and connected until a move, copy, format, or download finishes.
If the console still reports insufficient capacity, compare the actual free-space figure with the space required on the download screen and look for another installation or optional component to remove. Do not format a drive simply because a download failed; formatting is destructive and only addresses files on that drive.

Which storage choice fits your situation?
You need room right now and do not care about keeping an old install
Delete an unplayed game or app from Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Use Customize first when the game offers it and you only need to remove optional components. Your purchase remains available in the library for a later download.
You may play the game later but want to avoid a full redownload
Move the PS5 game to a compliant USB extended-storage drive. Plan for a copy-back operation before the next play session; the game will not launch directly from that drive. Keep the drive connected or store it safely so the archive remains available when needed.
You want a larger library that stays ready to play
Install a compatible M.2 SSD after checking Sony’s current requirements. This adds playable PS5 capacity, but the drive must be physically compatible, correctly installed, and formatted by the console. Treat the stated 8 TB limit as a maximum platform capacity, not a required purchase.
You are trying to protect progress rather than installations
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saves, or a FAT/exFAT USB drive for supported PS4 saves and media. Neither option replaces the local space required for a PS5 game installation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I play PS5 games from an external hard drive?
Not when the drive is configured as USB extended storage. PS5 games can be stored there, but PlayStation Support requires you to copy them back to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before playing. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.
Does deleting a PS5 game delete my purchase?
No. Deleting the installed files removes the local copy, not the purchase entitlement. You can download a purchased game again from your library, subject to the account and platform conditions that normally apply.
Will moving a game to USB move my saves too?
Game installation data and saved data are separate categories. Moving the game does not by itself move or back up your saves. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saves, or the supported FAT/exFAT USB workflow for PS4 saves.
Can I use any M.2 SSD in a PS5?
No. Sony requires specific interface, performance, physical-size, and cooling characteristics, and its FAQ says SATA M.2 SSDs are unsupported. Check the current Sony compatibility page, including the complete heatsink dimensions, before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
Is an 8 TB drive required for the maximum expansion?
No. Sony lists up to 8 TB for USB extended storage and compatible M.2 expansion. That is a platform ceiling. Select a capacity that fits your library and budget while meeting every compatibility requirement.

Can I use a USB hub for extended storage?
No. Sony’s USB extended-storage requirements call for a direct connection and state that USB hubs cannot be used. Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time.
Does cloud storage give me more room for a game download?
No. PlayStation Plus cloud storage, described by Sony as 100 GB on its US storage page, is for supported saves and related data. It does not hold the local game installation needed to download and play a PS5 title.
Why is my drive not recognized after I formatted it elsewhere?
Extended storage and FAT/exFAT storage use different formats and purposes. A drive must be formatted by the PS5 as USB extended storage for game installations, and that process erases its contents. Back up files before formatting and connect the drive directly to the console.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to free space before downloading a large PS5 game?
Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, delete an unused game or app, and check Customize for removable add-ons or portions first.
Can I archive a PS5 game without deleting it permanently?
Yes. Move it to compliant USB extended storage. You must copy it back to console or compatible M.2 storage before playing.
Which is better for playable PS5 storage, USB or M.2?
USB extended storage is an archive for PS5 games and direct-play storage for PS4 games. A compatible M.2 SSD is the option for keeping PS5 games installed and playable from the added capacity.
Will formatting USB extended storage erase my files?
Yes. Formatting erases the drive, so back up anything you want to keep and do not disconnect or power off during formatting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan cloud saves replace a game installation?
No. Cloud saves protect progress separately; they do not provide local capacity for installing or running a PS5 game.
The Bottom Line
For immediate space, use Settings > Storage to delete an unused installation or remove optional content through Customize. Use USB extended storage when you want a PS5 archive and accept copying games back. Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when you want additional PS5 games to remain playable from expanded storage. Keep saves separate from installations, back up before formatting, and follow Sony’s current requirements.
