Check the game’s storage requirement first, then open System Settings > Data Management to see free space and remove software or captures you no longer need. Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data, so you can make room without erasing your progress. If you need more capacity after cleanup, Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards; save data stays in System Memory.

Check how much space you need and where it is available

Start with the game you want to install. Its storage requirement is listed on its Nintendo eShop page for a digital purchase or on the game’s packaging for a physical copy. Requirements vary by game, so use the listing for that specific title rather than a general estimate. Nintendo’s guidance for a download that will not fit is in its Not Enough Space to Download Digital Content on Nintendo Switch 2 support article.

Check System Memory and the microSD Express card separately

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Check the available-space figures at the top of the screen. The page shows space available in System Memory and, if one is inserted, on the microSD Express card.

Nintendo says Switch 2 has 256 GB of storage, with a portion reserved for system use, so the amount available for your games and other user data is less than 256 GB. Check the console’s live figures instead of treating the advertised capacity as entirely usable. See Nintendo’s instructions for checking available space.

Compare the game’s listed requirement with the available space shown for your console and card. If you are short, identify whether you need to clear space in System Memory, on the card, or both. Nintendo’s Data Management screen reports the two locations separately; removing data from one does not mean the other location has gained the same amount of room.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Estimate how much to clear

Use the game-specific requirement as your target, then compare it with the figure for the storage location you intend to use. The difference is the minimum shortfall to address. For example, if a listing calls for more space than the location’s available-space figure, remove enough content from that same location to cover the gap. Do not assume a large amount of free space on the card will resolve a shortage in System Memory, or vice versa: check both figures again after cleanup.

The nominal 256 GB figure is not a promise that all 256 GB can be filled with games. Nintendo reserves part of the console storage for system use. The live Data Management figures are the useful numbers for this decision because they show the current available space in each location.

Free space by deleting or archiving software

Games and other downloaded software can be removed without deleting their save data. Choose software you are not currently playing, and use one of the following Nintendo-supported routes. After removing a game, you may need to download it again before playing it; its local save data remains separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Quick Delete in Data Management

  1. Open System Settings > Data Management.
  2. Select Quick Delete.
  3. Choose the software you want to remove and follow the on-screen prompts.

Quick Delete is useful when you want to review software from Data Management rather than locate each game’s icon on the HOME Menu. Confirm the selected titles before completing the removal.

Delete a game from the HOME Menu

  1. On the HOME Menu, highlight the game.
  2. Open the game’s options.
  3. Select Manage Software > Delete Software and follow the prompts.

Check that the command says Delete Software. Deleting software removes the downloaded program, not its save data. Nintendo lists the software and save-data deletion procedures separately in its How to Delete Content on Nintendo Switch 2 guide.

Archive software when the option is available

Archiving is another way to remove downloaded software while keeping its icon on the HOME Menu, where that option is available. It is useful if you want to retain the title’s visible shortcut while making room. The software must be downloaded again before you can play it. Archiving does not mean you have deleted the game’s save data.

Whether you delete or archive, do not choose a separate save-data deletion command unless you deliberately want to erase that title’s progress. Nintendo warns that deleted save data cannot be recovered. Removing software is the safer space-clearing action when your goal is to preserve a save.

Choose what you can redownload later

A practical first choice is a downloaded game or other software you are not playing now and are willing to download again when you want it. Before confirming, check that you have highlighted the intended title. Deleting or archiving software is not the same as uninstalling a save: the purpose is to remove the software copy to make storage available while keeping the title’s local save data separate.

If you want to keep a familiar shortcut, archive where the option is available. If you would rather remove the title from the HOME Menu, use Delete Software. Either way, plan for the software to need another download before it can be played. This may be less convenient than keeping it installed, but it avoids treating save-data deletion as a space-clearing shortcut.

Remove screenshots and videos you no longer need

Captures can also use storage. Before deleting anything you want to keep, copy it somewhere safe: Nintendo says screenshots and videos can be uploaded to the Nintendo Switch App for smart devices or transferred to a computer using a USB cable.

Manage captures by storage location

  1. Open System Settings > Data Management.
  2. Select Manage Screenshots and Videos.
  3. Choose the storage location and review the captures stored there.
  4. Delete only the items you no longer want to keep.

You can also delete individual or multiple items from Album. Review the selected items carefully before confirming a deletion, especially if you have not backed up captures you want to retain. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ explains capture storage and supported cleanup options: Nintendo Switch 2 Data Management FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up first, then review the correct location

If a capture matters to you, do not treat deletion as a way to test whether a backup exists. First upload it to the Nintendo Switch App for smart devices or transfer it to a computer with a USB cable. Then open Manage Screenshots and Videos and review the listed storage location before removing items. This helps avoid deleting captures from the wrong location or assuming that clearing one location also removes files stored elsewhere.

Album is another way to delete one capture or several at once. When selecting multiple items, pause before the final confirmation and check the selection. Captures are a useful cleanup target if you have already removed software you do not need, but keep only the copies you are comfortable losing locally after backup.

Decide whether a microSD Express card makes sense

If removing software and unwanted captures is not enough, a compatible microSD Express card is Nintendo’s supported storage expansion option for Switch 2. This is optional: Nintendo says no individual games currently require extra storage space to play. A card is an option for additional capacity, not a prerequisite for installing every game.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Use a microSD Express card, not a standard microSD card that you used with the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says older microSD cards do not meet the Switch 2 requirement for game data. The card can store downloadable software, updates, downloadable content (DLC), screenshots and videos. Game save data remains in System Memory and cannot be copied to the card.

Card capacity and using more than one card

Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible microSD Express cards up to 2 TB and recommends using one card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card. If you are deciding whether to expand, account for the fact that the card can hold listed content such as games and captures, but it will not provide extra capacity for save data.

A USB thumb drive or external USB hard drive is not a substitute for a supported game-storage card: Nintendo currently names microSD Express as the expansion route. See its microSD Express Card FAQ for compatibility and card-use details.

What to check before buying

If cleanup is not enough and you decide to shop for a card, check that the product is a microSD Express card and that its capacity suits the amount of additional storage you want. Nintendo says compatible cards up to 2 TB can be used. Do not substitute an older standard microSD card, a USB thumb drive or an external USB hard drive for this purpose.

Nintendo recommends using one card. That matters if you are tempted to spread games across multiple cards: software stored across different cards cannot later be combined onto one card. Compare compatibility, capacity, verified Nintendo licensing status if stated for the particular product, and current price and availability. Do not assume that every card has a particular license or that a quoted price will remain current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expansion has a clear limit: the card can store software, updates, DLC, screenshots and videos, but Nintendo says game save data cannot be copied to a microSD card. A card therefore increases room for supported content but does not move existing saves out of System Memory.

Keep save data safe while clearing space

There are two distinct actions to keep straight: removing downloaded software and deleting save data. The first frees room used by the software while preserving the save. The second targets saved progress and is a separate, irreversible action according to Nintendo. If your only goal is to install another game, do not use a save-data deletion option as a cleanup shortcut.

  • Want to keep a game icon visible? Use archiving where the option is available; the software will need to be downloaded again to play.
  • Want to remove a save? Treat that as a separate decision. Nintendo warns deleted save data cannot be recovered.

Because save data stays in System Memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card, buying a card does not move existing saves off the console or create more save-data space.

Do not confuse two similar-looking cleanup choices

When the goal is to install a game, look for Delete Software or use Quick Delete to remove software. A separate option to delete save data is not the same task. Nintendo says save deletion cannot be recovered, so it is not a reversible way to test whether you can free enough room. If you are unsure which command you are about to confirm, stop and review the option name before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, do not assume that buying a card will solve a save-data issue. Save data remains in System Memory. The card is useful for supported software and media, not as a destination for game saves.

If the game still will not download

Recheck the requirement and free-space display

Return to the game’s eShop listing or packaging and confirm the requirement for the correct title. Then revisit System Settings > Data Management and inspect both available-space figures. Make sure you have freed space in the location that needs it; the console and card are shown separately.

Remove more software or captures deliberately

If the relevant location still does not show enough available space, repeat Quick Delete or remove another title you are willing to download later. Alternatively, review screenshots and videos and delete only items you do not need. Nintendo’s support guidance for insufficient download space points to checking the content requirement and freeing storage through Data Management.

Consider expansion only if cleanup is not enough

If you regularly need more space after removing items you do not currently use, a compatible microSD Express card adds storage for supported content. Do not buy a standard microSD card, USB thumb drive or external hard drive expecting it to serve as Switch 2 software storage. No card changes the fact that save data remains in System Memory.

Use the figures as a final check

After deleting software or captures, return to Data Management and look at the available-space figure for the relevant location again. If the game still does not fit, compare the display with the game’s requirement once more. The console and card are reported separately, so do not count space shown for one location as though it were available in the other. If needed, remove additional software you can download later or backed-up captures you no longer want locally.

What to do first

  1. Look up the target game’s storage requirement in eShop or on its packaging.
  2. Check free space for System Memory and any inserted microSD Express card in System Settings > Data Management.
  3. Use Quick Delete, or choose Manage Software > Delete Software from a game’s HOME Menu options, to remove software you can download again.
  4. Back up wanted captures to the Nintendo Switch App or a computer before deleting them.
  5. Consider a compatible microSD Express card if free cleanup does not provide enough capacity.

For most immediate space problems, start by removing software you are not playing rather than touching save data. That makes room while keeping your progress intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting a game on Nintendo Switch 2 delete my save data?

No. Nintendo says deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. Use Delete Software or Quick Delete to remove the program, and do not select the separate save-data deletion option unless you intend to erase that progress. Nintendo warns deleted save data cannot be recovered.

Where do I check free storage on Switch 2?

Open System Settings > Data Management. The top of the page shows available space in System Memory and on an inserted microSD Express card. Check the figures separately because clearing one location does not add space to the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my original Nintendo Switch microSD card in Switch 2?

Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for this storage expansion. Older standard microSD cards used with the original Switch do not meet the Switch 2 requirement for game data.

Can a microSD Express card store game saves?

No. Nintendo says game save data remains in System Memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. The card can store downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots and videos.

Do I need a microSD Express card to install every Switch 2 game?

No. Nintendo says no individual games currently require extra storage space to play. Check the specific game’s eShop listing or packaging and try the free cleanup steps first; a compatible card is optional additional capacity.

Can I use a USB drive or external hard drive for Switch 2 game storage?

Nintendo names microSD Express as the supported expansion route. A USB thumb drive or external USB hard drive is not a substitute for a microSD Express card for Switch 2 software storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the game’s own requirement and the separate System Memory and card figures first. To make room without losing progress, delete or archive software you can download again, or back up and remove captures. Keep save-data deletion separate: it is irreversible, and a microSD Express card cannot hold game saves.
