Start with Windows Storage settings before buying hardware or deleting folders. Open Settings > System > Storage, identify what is consuming the system drive, then use Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, launcher controls, and your personal-file folders in that order. This approach recovers space without risking game libraries or Windows recovery files. If the drive is still too small, add a compatible microSD card, replace the internal SSD, or move infrequently used files to an external drive—but only after checking your exact handheld model.
The menu wording varies between Windows 10 and Windows 11, and every handheld has different drive sizes, card slots, and SSD form factors. The steps below apply to Windows handheld gaming PCs generally, with model-specific examples called out where official specifications are available.
1. Find out what is filling the handheld
Do not begin by deleting random folders. First establish which drive is short on space and which category is responsible. Windows may report installed apps, temporary files, system and reserved storage, documents, pictures, and other categories separately; a large game installation requires a different remedy from a crowded Downloads folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows displays a breakdown of space used on the system drive, normally C:. The current Storage settings layout is documented by Microsoft’s Storage settings guide.
- Open File Explorer > This PC and look at the free-space bars for every listed drive. Check the internal drive first, then any microSD card, USB drive, or other installed storage.
- Expand the largest Storage category and note the folders or applications it identifies. Record the available space before cleaning so you can judge which action helped.
Keep the system drive from reaching zero free space. Windows needs working room for updates, temporary files, shader caches, and paging activity, and a completely full drive can prevent ordinary maintenance. The exact amount of free space to preserve depends on the device and your workload; the official guidance does not establish a universal safe percentage, so use the Storage view and update requirements shown on your own system rather than relying on a generic number.

2. Use Windows’ built-in cleanup tools
Review Cleanup recommendations in Windows 11
Windows 11 groups several low-risk opportunities under Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. The page can list temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synchronized content, and unused apps. Open each group, inspect the individual items, and read the displayed space estimate before selecting anything.
- In Temporary files, keep items you still need. Windows may include update remnants, thumbnails, delivery-optimization files, and Recycle Bin contents; the exact list varies by system state.
- In Large or unused files, sort through the proposed files rather than selecting the entire group automatically. A large installer, recording, or archive may still be important.
- In Unused apps, verify the application name and whether its games or saves are stored separately. Uninstall only software you recognize and no longer need.
- In Cloud-synced files, confirm that an online copy exists and that removing the local copy will not prevent offline access when you play away from a network.
- Choose Clean up only after reviewing the selections. Menu names can differ in Windows 10; use the Storage page’s equivalent recommendations when available. Microsoft describes these categories in its free-space guidance.
Delete ordinary temporary files
From Settings > System > Storage, open Temporary files to see a more detailed list. Select only data that Windows identifies as disposable. If an item is still in use, Windows may leave it in place; that is normal. Restarting the handheld and checking again can make a pending cleanup visible, but do not interrupt an update that is actively installing.
Configure Storage Sense deliberately
Storage Sense can automate removal of temporary files and Recycle Bin content on the system drive. Microsoft says it operates on the system drive, typically C:. Its defaults do not automatically manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, review each setting, and then choose whether it should run automatically or only when you start it. The controls and their behavior are described in Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide.
Pay particular attention to the Downloads rule. A handheld is often used for game installers, mod files, screenshots, and emulator assets, so automatic deletion could remove something you intentionally kept. Set a retention period that matches your habits, or leave Downloads unmanaged and clean it manually. Apply the same caution to cloud files if you need them available during travel.
3. Remove or relocate large games through their launchers
Games are usually the largest controllable category on a gaming handheld, but launchers maintain manifests, updates, compatibility data, and save synchronization. Use the launcher’s own storage or uninstall controls instead of dragging a game folder in File Explorer or deleting files inside a launcher directory.

The ROG Ally family officially supports Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, and GOG Galaxy, among other software, according to the ROG Ally FAQ. Other Windows handhelds may support the same launchers, but their current interfaces and library-management features can change independently.
Choose what to do with each installed title
- Uninstall a game you no longer play. Start in the launcher’s library or installed-games view and use its uninstall command. Check whether cloud saves are synchronized before removing a title, especially if the handheld has been offline.
- Move a game when the launcher supports a library-location change. Use the launcher’s storage manager or library settings and let it perform the move. Follow the launcher’s current instructions because there is no single procedure shared by every Windows game service.
- Keep a smaller installation. Some games offer optional high-resolution texture packs, language packs, or campaign components. Remove optional components only through the game or launcher interface that provides them; do not delete files by guessing their purpose.
- Check multiple libraries. A handheld can have separate libraries on C:, a microSD card, and a USB drive. Review each launcher’s installed list and the Windows Storage category so an old library is not overlooked.
Do not assume that moving a shortcut, renaming a folder, or deleting a launcher cache will free the space reported for the game. If an uninstall appears not to reduce the available space, restart the launcher, empty the Recycle Bin if applicable, and recheck Settings > System > Storage. If the launcher still reports an inconsistent library, use its repair or library-rescan function rather than deleting manifest files manually.
4. Clean personal files that quietly consume the drive
Windows’ own guide highlights Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads as common sources of large files. Game captures and recordings are especially easy to accumulate on a handheld. Open each folder in File Explorer, switch to a details view, and sort by Size or Date modified.
- Review screen recordings, exported clips, screenshots, installers, archives, and old mod packages. Open a file before deleting it if its name is unclear.
- Move files you want to keep to a desktop PC, network location, external drive, or compatible SD card. Wait for the copy to finish, open a few files at the destination, and only then remove the originals.
- Delete files you no longer need. If you want them removed immediately from the internal drive, right-click the Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin; otherwise deleted files continue occupying space there.
- Check duplicate capture folders created by different recording tools. Keep one organized archive rather than several copies of the same clip.
Cloud synchronization can make a file appear local even when another copy exists online, but availability and offline behavior depend on the cloud service. Confirm that the remote copy is complete before choosing an online-only or local-delete option. A file that is merely visible in a synchronized folder is not automatically safe to remove from the device.
5. Handle Windows system files with care
Windows can offer cleanup of a previous installation after an upgrade. That can recover substantial space, but it removes the rollback path. Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone, and you won’t be able to go back to your previous version.” The warning appears in Microsoft’s free-space guidance.

Leave the previous installation in place while you are testing a major update, new drivers, or handheld-specific control software. If the system is stable and you are certain you will not need to return to the earlier Windows build, review the item in Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations and accept the rollback trade-off deliberately. Never delete protected Windows folders directly from File Explorer to create space; use the Storage interface so Windows can apply the correct cleanup rules.
6. Add storage only after checking your exact handheld
When cleanup is no longer enough, expansion is a hardware decision, not a universal Windows setting. Confirm the model, available slot, supported card type, internal SSD form factor, and the manufacturer’s installation guidance before buying anything. A part that fits one handheld may be unusable in another, and opening a device can require a backup and a Windows migration or reinstall.
microSD card
A compatible microSD card is the least invasive expansion path on models that provide a usable reader. ASUS documents microSD game storage for the ROG Ally family in its ROG Ally FAQ. After inserting a card, format it only when Windows or the handheld’s instructions call for it, then select the card as a library location in the launcher that supports moving or installing games there.
Use the card for installed games or files only when your model and launcher support that arrangement. Keep critical documents backed up elsewhere, and eject the card through Windows before removing it. A card is convenient because it does not require opening the handheld, but it is still removable media: losing or damaging it can make its games and files unavailable until it is replaced or restored from backup.
Internal SSD replacement
An internal SSD replacement can provide a permanent increase in the main library, but compatibility is model-specific. Check the exact module length and interface, the manufacturer’s service instructions, and whether the process requires transferring or reinstalling Windows. Back up saves, personal files, and any recovery media before opening the chassis. If you are not comfortable disconnecting the battery, handling small screws, or migrating an operating-system installation, use a qualified repair service.

Official ASUS announcements illustrate why model identification matters. The original ROG Ally announcement lists a 512 GB M.2 2230 SSD: ASUS ROG Ally announcement. The ROG Xbox Ally X announcement lists a 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD: ASUS Xbox Ally announcement. Those capacities and form factors are examples for those specific models, not a specification for every Windows handheld.
External USB drive
An external drive is useful for recordings, installers, documents, backups, and games you play infrequently. It avoids opening the handheld, but the drive must remain connected during use and may need a suitable cable or powered hub. Treat it primarily as storage kept elsewhere rather than assuming every game or launcher will run from it in the same way. Configure the launcher’s library location when supported, and test one installation before relocating a large collection.
Expansion choices at a glance
| Option | Compatibility check | Best use | Convenience while handheld | Installation risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| microSD card | Confirm the model has a supported reader and follow its card requirements. | Additional game installs and portable files when the launcher supports the location. | High: no case opening, and the card stays inside the device. | Low hardware risk, but removable-media failure or loss remains possible. |
| Internal SSD replacement | Match the exact SSD interface and physical form factor; verify migration or reinstall steps. | A larger permanent system and game library. | High after installation because no external device is needed. | Highest: requires opening the handheld and protecting or reinstalling Windows. |
| External USB drive | Check ports, cable requirements, file-system support, and launcher behavior. | Personal files, backups, recordings, and infrequently used games. | Lower: the drive and cable must travel with you. | Low internal risk, but the drive can be disconnected or damaged. |
There is no evidence here for a universal speed ranking between these options. Choose based on your handheld’s documented compatibility, what you intend to store, how often you play away from a desk, and whether you are prepared to migrate or reinstall Windows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Keep game libraries and free space manageable
Set a library policy
Decide which drive has which job. For example, reserve the internal drive for Windows, launchers, and games you play most often; use a compatible card for a rotating catalog; and use an external drive for recordings and archives. The exact assignment is yours, but writing it down prevents every launcher from silently filling C:.
Audit after major installs and updates
After installing a large game, a Windows feature update, or a graphics-driver package, revisit Settings > System > Storage and File Explorer > This PC. Confirm that the intended drive gained the files and that free space on C: remains adequate for normal updates. If space changed unexpectedly, inspect Temporary files, Downloads, and launcher library locations before deleting anything.

Protect saves and personal data
Uninstalling a game and replacing an SSD are different risks. Verify cloud-save synchronization where available, copy local saves if a game stores them outside the launcher, and back up personal files before hardware work. A storage cleanup is successful only if it creates usable room without losing data you meant to keep.
8. Troubleshoot common cleanup problems
The Storage total does not match File Explorer
Windows categories can take time to recalculate, and some files are reserved for the system or currently in use. Restart, allow pending updates to finish, and revisit Storage. Check Recycle Bin contents and each launcher’s library because deleted or moved game files may not be reflected immediately.
Storage Sense removed something unexpectedly
Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and review the Downloads, Recycle Bin, and cloud-content rules. Change the retention settings before running it again. Restore the file from your backup or cloud recycle area if one exists; Storage Sense is not a substitute for a backup.
Recommended Free Tools
A launcher cannot find a moved game
Do not recreate manifests by deleting folders. Use the launcher’s library-location, locate-existing-installation, verify, or rescan feature if it provides one, and consult that launcher’s current support instructions. If no supported move process exists, uninstalling and reinstalling to the new location is safer than manually rearranging protected launcher data.
The handheld remains full after deleting games
Check whether the game was installed on another library, whether the uninstaller left a separate high-resolution or language component, and whether the Recycle Bin still contains deleted files. Then inspect Videos, Downloads, and temporary files. If Windows still reports unusual system usage, avoid deleting system folders manually and use the built-in Storage cleanup categories.
Quick Recap
9. A safe 15-minute cleanup checklist
- Open Settings > System > Storage and record the largest categories and the free space on each drive.
- Review Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files; remove only items you recognize.
- Configure Storage Sense so Downloads and cloud files are not deleted unless that is genuinely what you want.
- Open each game launcher, sort installed titles by size when the launcher offers that view, and uninstall or move games using its own controls.
- Sort Videos, Pictures, Music, and Downloads by size; copy anything worth keeping before deleting it.
- Empty the Recycle Bin only after confirming that its contents are no longer needed.
- Leave the previous Windows installation alone if rollback may still be useful.
- If the drive is still insufficient, identify the exact handheld model and compare a compatible microSD card, internal SSD replacement, or external drive using the criteria above.
