Short answer: Treat GTA VI and Modern Warfare 4 differently. Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but its cited support information does not publish a final install size. For Modern Warfare 4, Steam lists 115GB available on an SSD at launch for PC, and Xbox warns that mandatory updates can need additional room. On PS5, delete games you can redownload, move less-used PS5 games to USB extended storage for archiving, or install a compatible internal M.2 SSD when you want several large games to remain playable without transfers.
What is confirmed about the storage requirements?
Storage planning is easier when confirmed requirements are separated from speculation. The following facts are the useful starting point:
- GTA VI: Rockstar confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Its cited support page lists a preload start of November 12, 2026, but it does not publish a final install-size figure. Do not rely on rumored numbers when deciding how much space to clear.
- Modern Warfare 4 on PC: Steam lists 115GB available on an SSD at launch. That is a launch requirement, not a promise that future updates, optional content or other installed components will fit in the same amount of free space.
- Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox: Xbox warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage. There is no single console-size figure that should be applied to every platform, edition or installed component.
- PS5 internal expansion: Sony’s storage guidance specifies a commercially available M.2 SSD using PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, with capacities from 250GB to 4TB for the cited PS5 model, plus physical-fit and other requirements.
These distinctions determine the right cleanup strategy: free space immediately by deleting, archive games on a USB drive, or expand internal storage when you want a larger playable library.
Choose between deleting, archiving and expanding
| Option | What it does | Can a PS5 game be played immediately from that location? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete | Removes the installed game and releases its space. Your purchase remains in your library for redownloading. | No; reinstall it before playing. | Games you will not play soon and content you can download again. |
| USB extended storage | Moves PS5 game data off the console for storage. | No. PS5 games must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before launch. | Keeping infrequently played games without downloading them again. |
| Internal M.2 SSD | Adds high-speed internal capacity that the console can use for installed games. | Yes, when the drive meets Sony’s compatibility requirements. | Maintaining a large, ready-to-play PS5 library. |
A USB drive is therefore an archive, not a way to run PS5 games directly. An internal M.2 drive costs more and must be compatible, but it avoids the transfer step every time you return to a large title.

Free space on a PS5: the complete workflow
1. See what is consuming the drive
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Open the games and apps category and sort the list by size so the largest installations appear first.
- Check whether the space is being used by complete games, add-ons, captured media or other data before deleting anything.
Starting with the largest items gives you a measurable result quickly and avoids removing several small games when one unused installation would have freed more room.
2. Delete games you can redownload
Select a game you no longer need installed and choose the delete command. Sony states that deleting a purchased game does not remove your entitlement: you can download it again from your game library. This is the fastest free option when your internet connection and download time are acceptable.
Do not assume that deleting a game also protects its local saves. If a save is important, back it up before changing the installation or other data.

Some large games separate campaign, multiplayer, language packs or other add-ons. Highlight the game, open Customize when that option appears, and remove components you no longer use. This can preserve the part you still play while avoiding a complete reinstall later.
The option is title-dependent. If Customize is not shown, the game does not expose removable components through that screen; do not delete random files from the console’s storage.

4. Archive PS5 games on USB extended storage
- Connect a compatible USB extended-storage drive and let the PS5 format it if it has not been prepared for console use.
- From the storage-management screen, select the installed game and choose the move option to transfer it to USB extended storage.
- When you want to play that PS5 game again, move it back to console storage or the internal M.2 SSD.
Sony’s guidance is explicit: PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. The drive is valuable because it preserves the downloaded data, so a return visit requires a transfer rather than a new download.
5. Add an internal M.2 SSD for a permanent playable library
Choose this route when repeated USB transfers or redownloads are more frustrating than the cost and installation work. Sony’s cited safety guide requires a compatible commercially available drive with these headline specifications:
Recommended Free Tools
- PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface
- Capacity from 250GB to 4TB
- Physical dimensions, heatsink clearance and other fit requirements specified for the PS5 model
Do not buy solely by capacity. A SATA M.2 drive, an incompatible PCIe generation, or a module with a heatsink that does not fit the expansion bay can fail the console’s requirements even if its advertised storage looks sufficient. Check Sony’s current installation and safety information for your exact console model, power the system down completely, install the drive as directed, and format it when the PS5 prompts you.
An M.2 SSD is the option that keeps installed PS5 games playable from the added storage. It does not change the fact that a title may still require updates or online services.
6. Protect saves before a major cleanup
When a backup matters, upload saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before deleting games or changing storage. Verify that the upload has completed, then perform the cleanup. This separates the safe removal of an installation from the risk of losing progress stored only on the console.

Free space on Xbox Series X|S
Use the console’s storage-management tools
Open the Xbox storage-management screen, review installed games and apps by size, and remove titles you no longer play. For games you want to keep, move compatible installations to supported expansion storage instead of downloading them again later. The exact choices available can vary by title and storage location, so follow the move or copy prompts shown by the console.
Keep room for mandatory updates
Xbox’s Modern Warfare 4 listing warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage. Do not plan to finish with only the published launch requirement free; leave practical headroom for the update process and any content you intend to install. If an update fails for lack of space, remove or move another large game, retry the update, and then restore archived titles as needed.
Do not count on a disc to solve GTA VI storage
Rockstar says the physical GTA VI package contains a download code and no disc. Buying the physical package therefore does not provide a disc-based installation that bypasses the console’s storage requirement. Plan for a digital download and the space needed for the installed game when Rockstar publishes the final figure.
Free space on a Windows PC for Modern Warfare 4
Start with the published SSD requirement
Steam lists 115GB available on an SSD at launch for Modern Warfare 4. The requirement is specifically for available space and an SSD, not merely a hard drive with that much capacity. Because updates and optional components can need more room, treat the figure as a floor rather than a target to hit exactly.
Use Windows’ storage view to find large files
- Open Settings > System > Storage and let Windows calculate the categories.
- Review installed apps and games, then uninstall titles you no longer use.
- Open the temporary-files area and remove safe caches and installers selected by Windows. Read the descriptions before removing anything in Downloads or other personal folders.
- Inspect Videos, Pictures and Desktop for large captures, exported edits and duplicate installers. Move files you need to another drive before deleting them.
- Empty the Recycle Bin so deleted files actually release their space.
- Recheck the free-space figure on the SSD that will receive the game before starting the download.
Game launchers can use temporary staging space while downloading or updating. A drive that barely meets the displayed requirement can still fail during unpacking, patching or verification, so keep more free space than the launch minimum without treating any particular extra amount as an official requirement.

Check the install location
Multiple drives can make the available-space message confusing. Confirm which drive Steam will use for the game and make sure that drive, rather than a different disk with spare capacity, has the required free space. If the launcher offers a library-location choice, select the SSD with the most practical headroom before downloading.
Why Modern Warfare 4 can need so much storage
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes. The stated goal is to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall hard-drive storage footprint. That strategy shifts part of the experience from a completely local asset set to data that can be streamed as needed.
There is an important trade-off: Activision says a continuous internet connection is required to play Multiplayer, including private matches, and DMZ. Texture streaming can reduce local storage, but it does not make the game an offline installation. A machine or console with enough disk space can still be unable to enter those modes when the required connection is unavailable.

Use the confirmed platform and preload information
Rockstar confirms GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its support information lists November 12, 2026 as the start of preload. That date is useful for scheduling a cleanup, but it does not reveal the final download or installed size.

No official install-size figure appears in the cited Rockstar support documentation as of October 16, 2026. Avoid repeating a rumored number as though it were a requirement. Instead, clear the largest safe targets first, keep ordinary update headroom, and recheck the official listing when Rockstar publishes the size or the preload client reports the actual space needed.

A practical cleanup order before either launch
- Inventory first: open the platform’s storage screen and identify the largest games, captures, installers and add-ons.
- Remove finished or abandoned games: delete purchases that can be redownloaded, or move them to supported archive storage when you want to preserve the download.
- Trim components: use PS5’s Customize option for titles that expose removable add-ons or completed portions.
- Protect progress: back up important PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before deleting data.
- Choose the right expansion: use USB on PS5 for archiving, an internal compatible M.2 SSD for a ready-to-play PS5 library, or supported Xbox expansion storage for compatible Xbox titles.
- Recheck the destination: on PC, verify the exact SSD selected in Steam; on console, confirm the game is being installed to the intended internal or expansion location.
- Leave update room: Modern Warfare 4’s Xbox listing specifically warns about additional space for mandatory updates, and any platform may need temporary working space while installing.
Common storage mistakes and their fixes
Mistake: treating a USB drive as PS5 game storage you can play from
Fix: use USB extended storage as an archive and move the PS5 game back to console or M.2 storage before launching.
Mistake: buying an arbitrary M.2 SSD
Fix: verify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe support, the 250GB–4TB range and the physical-fit requirements in Sony’s guide for your model. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility.
Mistake: deleting a game without protecting a valuable save
Fix: upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage first and confirm the backup.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Mistake: assuming the PC launch number covers every future download
Fix: regard the Steam figure as the launch baseline, keep additional headroom, and check the launcher again when updates or optional components are offered.
Mistake: applying the PC number to every console
Fix: use the storage-management information for your specific Xbox or PlayStation version. Installed components and update behavior can differ by platform, so the PC listing is not a universal console requirement.
Mistake: expecting GTA VI’s physical package to include an install disc
Fix: Rockstar says the package contains a download code and no disc, so reserve console storage for the download and installation.
Bottom line
For PS5, delete games you can redownload, use Customize to remove unneeded components, archive rarely played PS5 games on USB, and choose a Sony-compatible internal M.2 SSD when you want those games to stay playable without transfers. On Xbox Series X|S, use the storage-management and supported expansion options while leaving room for mandatory updates. On Windows, Modern Warfare 4 starts with a published 115GB SSD requirement, but updates and installation overhead make extra headroom essential. GTA VI’s final size remains unpublished in Rockstar’s cited support information, so clear space based on confirmed platform details and wait for the official preload data rather than trusting rumors.
