To free up storage on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, first check Settings > Battery and device care > Storage—or Settings > Device care > Storage on some versions. Review the files shown in each category, then delete only items you recognize and no longer need. If your exact tablet model supports a microSD card, you can use Samsung’s My Files app to move photos, videos, and other files to it; the card does not become internal storage for apps.
Check what is using storage before deleting anything
Samsung’s Storage screen groups tablet data into categories so you can see where space is being used and inspect files before removing them. The labels and menu layout depend on the tablet model and software version, so the path may appear under either Battery and device care or Device care.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care or Device care, depending on what your tablet shows.
- Tap Storage.
- Review the categories and open the ones that appear to contain files you might be able to remove or move.
Samsung’s current Device Care guidance and its older Device Care instructions both describe checking storage by category. The exact categories and presentation can vary by model and software version. If your tablet uses different labels, look for Storage within its Device care settings rather than assuming another model’s screen will match yours.
Start by identifying the files taking up room, not by deleting unfamiliar entries. Large videos, downloaded files, duplicate items, and media you no longer want may be candidates. A category label alone is not a reason to delete everything inside it: open the category and check the individual items first.

A useful first pass is to look for the biggest files and for obvious duplicates or items you no longer use. A large video may be a better place to start than a collection of small documents, but size alone does not make a file disposable. Check names, previews, and details when they are available, and consider whether you still need the item on the tablet. If you cannot identify a file or its purpose, leave it alone until you can verify it or preserve a copy somewhere you can access.
Storage categories are an inspection aid, not a recommendation to clear every category. The contents may include files you want to keep, and the screen can look different on another tablet or software version. Work through relevant categories one at a time so you can see what you selected and avoid treating all data in a category as unnecessary.
Remove files you recognize and no longer need
From the relevant category on the Storage screen, review the listed files and select only the items you have checked. Samsung’s guidance covers reviewing items such as large, duplicate, and unused files, then deleting selected files. The precise labels and controls vary across versions.

- Inspect the file names and, where available, their details or previews.

- Use the on-screen delete control and confirm only after checking the selection.
When uncertain, leave a file in place until you know what it is or have backed it up. Do not delete system files or unfamiliar items simply because they appear in a storage listing. Be equally cautious with app data: removing it can affect information stored by that app, and it is not the same as deleting a photo or downloaded document. If an app itself is no longer needed, decide that separately rather than treating every app-related storage entry as disposable.
Before confirming a deletion, review the selection again. A mistaken selection can include something you meant to keep, especially when several similar filenames appear together. If an item matters, choose a backup or transfer route first and verify that it is accessible at the destination. Do not assume that an item is safely preserved just because you started copying it.
Samsung’s storage instructions support selecting files for removal; they do not promise a particular amount of space recovered. What you regain depends on the items you choose and their sizes. There is no reason to expect a fixed result from a cleanup: removing a few large files may have a different effect from deleting many small ones, and the available storage display may vary across devices.

Use the built-in Settings and My Files tools as the starting point. Samsung’s instructions describe those tools for identifying, deleting, moving, and copying files; they do not establish a need for paid cleanup software. A third-party utility is not a substitute for checking what a file is before removing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMove photos and other files to a microSD card if your tablet supports one
A microSD card can hold files you move or copy from the tablet, but not every Samsung Galaxy tablet has a card slot. Check the specifications or manual for your exact model before buying a card. Support for a slot, and any capacity or card requirements, are model-specific; there is no universal capacity or speed recommendation established for all Galaxy tablets.
Check the exact model rather than relying on the Galaxy tablet name alone. The product specifications or manual are the right places to confirm whether the device has a card slot and what card requirements apply. If those details are not clear, do not assume that a card marketed for another Galaxy tablet will work in yours. The device maker’s specifications should guide the choice of card type and supported capacity.
When a compatible card is installed, use My Files to transfer selected files:
- Open My Files.
- Browse to the folder containing the files you want to transfer.
- Select the files, then tap Move or Copy.
- Choose the SD card as the destination and open the folder where the files should go.
- Tap Move here or Copy here.
The SD card destination appears only when a card is installed and available to the tablet. Moving removes the selected files from their original location after transfer; copying leaves the originals in place. If you want a backup while keeping the tablet copy, choose Copy. If your goal is to reclaim internal file space and you have verified the destination, Move is the relevant choice.

After the transfer, check the card destination and open a few items to make sure the files are there and usable before deleting any remaining originals. The controls and folder names may differ by software version, but the operation is still carried out in My Files.

Samsung explicitly states in its US support guidance, “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” In practical terms, do not expect a microSD card to merge with internal storage or become extra internal app storage. Use it for files you manage, such as media and documents, rather than assuming apps can install or store their data there.
This distinction matters when choosing what to buy. A card is a removable destination for files that you transfer; it is not a guaranteed way to enlarge the tablet’s internal app space. If the main problem is that internal space is occupied by app data, a card transfer of photos or documents may help with those files, but it does not turn the card into internal app storage. Do not purchase a card on the assumption that it will automatically move apps or their data.
Compare cards only after confirming model compatibility. Relevant checks are whether the tablet has a microSD slot, the supported capacity, and any card type or speed requirements stated by Samsung for that model. Your choice should also reflect whether you need removable storage for files or a separate backup destination. The support guidance does not set one capacity, speed class, or price that is right for every Galaxy tablet, so use the specifications for your particular model instead of relying on a universal recommendation.
Use USB-C storage as a model-dependent backup option
Samsung’s Maintenance mode guidance identifies an external-storage backup using a USB storage device connected to the tablet’s USB-C port, or a microSD card installed in the device. This is a backup or transfer possibility, not evidence that every USB storage device works with every tablet or that USB storage expands internal app storage. Compatibility depends on the device and storage accessory.
If you use an external device to preserve files before deleting them, verify that the files are present on the destination before removing the tablet copies. A backup is useful only if you can access the saved files when you need them.
USB-C storage and a microSD card serve related but different practical needs. Samsung’s cited Maintenance mode instructions describe USB storage as an external backup option, while My Files instructions describe moving or copying files to an installed SD card. Neither option should be treated as guaranteed internal app expansion, and compatibility is not universal. Choose based on your goal—keeping an extra copy or moving selected files—and check whether the tablet and accessory support the connection you plan to use.

Choose the right next step for your tablet
- You are not sure what is filling storage: open Storage in Device care and inspect categories before acting.
- You found old media or downloads: delete selected files you recognize, or move them with My Files if you need to keep them.
- You want removable storage: verify the exact tablet model’s card-slot support and specifications, then use My Files to move or copy items.
- You want an external backup: consider USB-C storage or a microSD card only after checking compatibility for your tablet and the storage device.
Samsung’s support materials do not establish a universal menu layout, microSD capacity, speed requirement, or guaranteed space gain across Galaxy tablets. Use the instructions and specifications for your own model when those details matter.

A straightforward sequence is to inspect Storage, identify files you recognize, decide whether to delete them or keep them elsewhere, and verify any transfer before removing the tablet copy. If you are shopping for removable storage, confirm slot support and the model-specific requirements first. These checks prevent two common mistakes: deleting something you meant to keep, and buying a card that does not suit the tablet.

Can USB-C storage be used with a Galaxy tablet?
Samsung identifies a USB storage device connected to the USB-C port as an external backup option in its Maintenance mode guidance. Compatibility depends on the tablet and accessory, so check both rather than assuming every USB device will work.
How much space will I get back?
There is no guaranteed amount. It depends on the files you remove or move and their sizes. Review the selected items before acting, and do not delete unfamiliar files just to try to increase available space.
Should I clear app data or install a cleanup app?
Do not treat app data as disposable: removing it can affect information stored by that app. Samsung’s storage guidance supports reviewing and selecting files, and does not establish a need for paid cleanup software. Start with Settings and My Files and remove only items you understand.
Can Samsung recommend one microSD capacity or speed for all Galaxy tablets?
No universal capacity or speed recommendation applies across all Galaxy tablets. Check the specifications for your exact model and choose a card that meets its stated requirements.
The Bottom Line
Start in Settings > Battery and device care or Device care > Storage, inspect files by category, and delete only items you recognize and no longer need. Use My Files to move or copy files to microSD only if your exact tablet supports it; a card is removable file storage, not internal app storage. Check your model’s specifications before choosing an SD card or USB-C storage, and verify any backup or transfer before deleting the tablet copy.
