Start at Settings > System preferences > Storage management. This screen shows what is consuming your Chromebook’s internal drive—Downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage and other user accounts—so you can remove the right data instead of deleting files at random. Clean up unneeded downloads and apps first, then review offline Drive copies and extra local accounts. Move suitable files to Drive or compatible external storage, and back up anything important before deleting or formatting.

Find out what is using your Chromebook’s storage

ChromeOS separates storage into categories, which makes a nearly full device easier to diagnose. Open Settings, choose System preferences, and select Storage management. Depending on your ChromeOS version, the wording or location can differ slightly, but the page should show remaining space and the main categories occupying it. Google’s current cleanup guidance is available in Free up space on your Chromebook.

Category What it can contain First action
Downloads Files saved from the browser, such as installers, videos, images, PDFs and archives Open the Files app and remove items you have backed up or no longer need
Offline files Local copies of Google Drive files marked available offline, including automatic My Drive sync on some Chromebook Plus devices Turn off offline availability for files that do not need to work without an internet connection
Browsing data Cached content, browsing history, cookies and other locally stored browser information Clear only the data you understand the consequences of removing
Android storage Android applications and the data they store Uninstall unused apps and remove their associated data when appropriate
Other users Files belonging to additional accounts that have been added to this Chromebook Remove an account from the device only after confirming its local files are not needed

Storage management is a diagnostic view, not a guarantee that every file can be safely deleted from that screen. Open the relevant category and check the actual files, app names or offline settings before confirming a removal.

Clean up Downloads without losing files you still need

Review the local Downloads folder

ChromeOS saves browser downloads to the Chromebook’s local drive by default. Google describes Downloads as a temporary location, so it is often the fastest place to recover space. Open the Files app, select Downloads, and sort or inspect the contents. Large videos, disk images, duplicate photos, exported projects and old installers are common candidates.

  1. Open Files and select Downloads.
  2. Use the file details or sorting controls to identify unusually large or obsolete items.
  3. Open a file first if you are unsure what it is. Do not remove a document that is the only copy of important work.
  4. Move files you want to keep to Google Drive or a compatible external drive, then verify that the copy opens from its new location.
  5. Select files that are no longer needed, choose Delete, and empty the Files app’s Trash when you are certain you will not need to restore them.

Deleting a file from Downloads removes the local copy; it does not automatically create a backup elsewhere. If a download is an installer or archive that you can obtain again, deleting it is usually low risk, but personal photos, tax documents and school or work files should be copied first.

Change where future downloads are saved

If Downloads repeatedly fills the internal drive, change Chrome’s download destination. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and go to Settings > Downloads. Use Change to select a different folder, or enable the option that asks where to save each file. The exact control can vary by ChromeOS release. Saving directly to a Drive folder or an attached storage device can prevent another large batch from accumulating locally, although an external device must remain connected while the file is being saved.

Google’s file guidance covers alternate save locations, deletion, Drive and external storage in Open, save, or delete files on your Chromebook.

Clear browser data carefully

Storage management may identify browsing data as a significant category. Chrome can retain cached webpages, cookies, browsing history, download history and other local information. Clearing it can reclaim space, but it may also sign you out of sites, remove locally stored browsing information or make pages load more slowly until their cache is rebuilt.

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
  2. Choose More tools > Clear browsing data (the wording may differ slightly by version).
  3. Select a time range and review each data type before proceeding.
  4. Clear only the categories you intend to remove, then confirm.

Download history is only a record of past downloads; deleting that history does not necessarily delete the files in the Downloads folder. Check both places. If a site relies on cookies or saved site data, clearing those items can require you to sign in again. Browser cleanup is therefore useful when the category is large, but it should not replace reviewing the actual files that occupy the drive.

Remove unused apps and Android data

Uninstall apps you no longer use

Unused ChromeOS and Android apps can consume more than the application package itself because they may retain offline content, media, caches and settings. Google notes that an app can be downloaded again later, so uninstalling one is preferable to disabling the entire Android environment when you simply need space.

  1. Open the Launcher and locate the app.
  2. Right-click (or two-finger tap) its icon and choose Uninstall.
  3. Confirm the removal and repeat for apps you no longer need.
  4. Return to Settings > System preferences > Storage management to check whether Android storage has decreased.

Removing an app can also remove data stored only inside that app. Check the app’s own export or backup option first if it contains notes, downloaded media, game progress or locally edited files. Android app storage is covered in Google’s Install & use Android apps on your Chromebook.

Do not turn off Google Play as a routine cleanup step

Turning off the Google Play Store is a destructive choice, not an ordinary cache-clearing action. Google says that disabling Play Store erases Android app data and settings from the Chromebook. Use it only when you deliberately want that result and have backed up anything important. For a storage shortage caused by a few unused apps, uninstall those apps instead.

Reduce space used by offline Google Drive files

Drive files that are available offline have local copies on the Chromebook. They remain useful without an internet connection, but a large offline collection can consume much of a small internal drive. Chromebook Plus devices may offer synchronization of all My Drive for offline use when enough local space is available; enabling that convenience can substantially increase local storage use.

Turn off offline access for individual files

In the Files app or Google Drive interface, locate a file or folder marked available offline and switch off its offline setting. The cloud copy remains in Drive, while the device copy is removed after synchronization. Keep offline access for documents needed during travel, outages or places with unreliable connectivity; leave large videos, completed projects and archival material online if you can work without them locally.

Use Drive’s storage cleanup control

Google documents a cleanup path at Settings > System preferences > Google Drive > Clean up storage. Review the files listed there and remove offline availability from items that do not need to be stored on the device. The controls and labels can vary with ChromeOS version, so follow the wording shown on your Chromebook. Instructions for offline copies and Chromebook Plus synchronization are in Use Google Drive files offline on your Chromebook.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing offline availability is different from deleting a file from Drive. Confirm that distinction before clicking a delete command: the goal is to remove the local copy while preserving the cloud copy.

Check additional user accounts before deleting one

Every account added to a Chromebook can have locally stored files. Storage management lists this use under other users. Removing an extra user from the device removes that user’s files stored on the Chromebook. It does not delete the person’s Google Account or account information such as bookmarks stored with that account.

  1. Ask the account owner whether any local Downloads, offline Drive files or app data must be retained.
  2. Sign in to that account and copy or synchronize files that need to be kept.
  3. From the Chromebook sign-in screen, select the account’s menu and choose the option to remove the account from the device.
  4. Confirm only after verifying that the local copy is no longer needed.

This is an effective way to reclaim space on a shared Chromebook, but it is not a way to close or erase the person’s Google Account.

Move files to Drive or compatible external storage

Choose cloud storage when internet access is acceptable

Google Drive keeps suitable files available across devices and removes the need to retain every file on the Chromebook. Keep only the files you need offline. Google One can add capacity to the Google account, but it does not enlarge the Chromebook’s physical internal drive; it helps only when you move files out of local storage and access them online. Google identifies additional account storage in Connect & entertain with apps on Chromebook.

Choose a USB flash drive or SSD for local access

An external flash drive or SSD is useful when files must remain available without an internet connection. Before buying or relying on one, check the Chromebook’s available port (USB-C, USB-A or an adapter), the drive’s capacity and file-system compatibility. Google warns that some external devices may not work with a particular Chromebook, so compatibility is not universal.

  • Portable & Lightweight: Compact and durable design for travel, school, or daily use-take your files anywhere
  • Plug-and-Play Convenience: No software or drivers required; simply insert into USB-C or USB-A ports and start transferring files instantly

Connect the drive, open Files, and copy or move selected items from Downloads to the external volume. Open several copied files from the drive before deleting the originals. Always eject the device from the Files app before unplugging it to reduce the chance of unfinished writes or corruption.

Never format before making a backup

Formatting an external drive erases its contents. If ChromeOS asks to format a device, stop and confirm that the drive is empty or that every file has another verified copy. A format prompt can indicate an unsupported file system, a damaged drive or a compatibility issue; it is not proof that formatting is safe.

Storage choice Best when Important limitation
Google Drive, online You have dependable internet and want files available on multiple devices Files not marked offline are not reliably available without a connection
Google Drive, selected offline files You need a limited working set during travel or outages Each offline copy consumes internal storage
USB flash drive You need inexpensive, portable local file transfer Capacity, durability and Chromebook compatibility vary
External SSD You need larger local storage and frequent file access It still requires a compatible port and safe ejection
Google One account storage Your Google account needs more cloud capacity after moving files online It does not increase the Chromebook’s internal drive

Understand what happens when storage gets critically low

Google warns that low Chromebook storage can interfere with downloading files, loading webpages, saving settings such as passwords, adding user accounts and running Android apps. ChromeOS may also automatically delete downloaded files, browsing data, cache or unused accounts when space is very low. Automatic cleanup is not a backup strategy: it can remove data you expected to keep, so copy important files before the device reaches that point. The warning and affected functions are described in Google’s storage guidance.

If you cannot download a file

  • Open Storage management and note the largest category.
  • Delete or move large, replaceable files from Downloads.
  • Clear appropriate browsing data if that category is unusually large.
  • Retry the download only after space is visibly available.

If Android apps will not install or open

  • Remove unused Android apps and their downloaded content.
  • Review offline Drive files, which can occupy space outside the Android category.
  • Restart the Chromebook after cleanup so storage totals and app installation checks refresh.
  • Do not disable Play Store unless you intend to erase Android app data and settings.

If space appears to return and then disappear

  • Check whether Chrome downloads are still directed to local Downloads.
  • Review Chromebook Plus offline synchronization and reduce the set of files kept offline.
  • Look for another user account or an app that continually downloads data.
  • Reopen Storage management after each major change to identify the category growing again.

A safe order for reclaiming space

Use this sequence when you need room quickly but want to minimize accidental loss:

  1. Back up irreplaceable documents, photos and project files to Drive or another verified location.
  2. Open Settings > System preferences > Storage management and record the largest categories.
  3. Clean Downloads, starting with files you can replace or have already backed up.
  4. Uninstall unused apps, checking app-specific data first.
  5. Reduce offline Drive availability, especially broad Chromebook Plus synchronization.
  6. Clear selected browser data if browsing data is a major consumer and you accept the sign-out or history consequences.
  7. Review and, if appropriate, remove additional local users after confirming their files are safe.
  8. Move remaining local files to compatible external storage or Drive, then verify the copies.
  9. Recheck Storage management and keep a buffer of free space for updates, downloads and temporary files.

There is no official cleanup amount that every Chromebook will recover; the result depends on the files, apps and offline data on that particular device. Storage management is the reliable way to see whether each action made a meaningful difference.

Prevent the Chromebook from filling again

  • Review Downloads regularly instead of treating it as permanent archival storage.
  • Save large files directly to Drive or an attached, compatible drive when practical.
  • Keep only the Drive folders needed offline; remove offline status from completed work.
  • Uninstall apps you have not used recently, especially apps that cache media.
  • Before accepting an automatic offline-sync option, check how much internal space is available.
  • Keep at least one verified backup of important files before any deletion, account removal or format operation.
  • Check Storage management after major downloads, app installations or synchronization changes.

The practical goal is not to delete everything local. It is to reserve the internal drive for ChromeOS, active work and the files that genuinely need offline access, while placing archives and replaceable downloads somewhere safer and more suitable.
