Start with Windows 11’s storage report rather than deleting model folders. Open Settings > System > Storage to see which drive is full and whether the pressure comes from apps, temporary files, personal files, cloud content, or system and reserved storage. Windows’ Cleanup recommendations and Storage Sense can remove expendable data, but Microsoft’s built-in Copilot+ models and runtimes are Windows-serviced components: there is no general supported procedure to uninstall or move them. If you need more room after cleanup, move large personal files to another drive and empty the Recycle Bin.
What you can—and cannot—move
Windows 11 does not present Copilot+ model components as ordinary downloads that you can drag to another disk. Microsoft describes these components as local models plus supporting runtimes maintained through Windows AI updates. Phi Silica is included with Windows on supported Copilot+ PCs. The official Windows guidance covering versions 24H2, 25H2, 26H1 and 26H2 (on applicable editions and hardware) does not provide a universal uninstall or relocation workflow for those built-in components.
That distinction determines the safe cleanup plan:
- Use Windows storage pages to identify and remove temporary or expendable content.
- Review personal files in folders such as Downloads, Videos and Pictures, and move wanted but infrequently used files to an external drive if necessary.
- Do not delete protected Windows folders or guessed “model” directories. Removing files outside a supported setting can break updates, features or system recovery.
- Treat a model installed by a separate application differently. Use that application’s own storage setting or uninstaller after confirming its documentation; do not apply Windows-component advice to a third-party model package.
No published figure establishes the disk footprint of each built-in AI component, so the amount you can reclaim cannot be predicted from the model name or from the fact that a PC is a Copilot+ device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Confirm which drive is actually full
Begin with measurement. Storage estimates change with the device, installed applications, update state and cloud files, so do not assume that an AI feature is responsible simply because the PC has one.

- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Record the available space and expand the categories shown for the system drive, normally C:. Look for Apps, Temporary files, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Other, and System & reserved.
- Open File Explorer > This PC and compare the free-space bar for every internal and removable drive. A second drive may have room even when C: is nearly full.
- Note whether the pressure is persistent or appeared after a large update, a video download, or a cloud-sync change. The timing helps you choose a reversible action instead of deleting broadly.
Storage categories are estimates, not a promise that every listed byte can be removed. A category can include files owned by several applications, and cleaning one item may have little visible effect if another category is still growing.
2. Use Cleanup recommendations before manual deletion
Windows groups relatively safe opportunities in one review screen.
- Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Open each category and read the item descriptions and estimated savings. Depending on the PC, Windows can show temporary files, large or unused files, files that are already synced to the cloud, and unused apps.
- Select only items you recognise as expendable, then choose Clean up.
- Recheck Settings > System > Storage and File Explorer > This PC after the operation finishes.
Review matters because “large” or “unused” does not mean unwanted. A project archive, game installer, tax file or downloaded video can be important even if Windows has not seen it opened recently. If Cleanup recommendations offers a previous Windows installation, deleting it can recover substantial space but removes the straightforward rollback path to that earlier installation. Keep it only if you still need that recovery option.

When the screen lists cloud-synced files, verify that the cloud copy is complete and that you understand whether the action deletes the file or merely removes its local copy. The difference is explained in the OneDrive section below.
3. Configure Storage Sense without losing files you still need
Storage Sense automates selected cleanup tasks. It works on the system drive, usually C:, and can run on a schedule or when free space is low.
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
- Turn it on if you want automatic maintenance, then choose the schedule or the low-space trigger offered by Windows.
- Review the temporary-file options before saving the configuration.
- Decide separately what should happen to files in Downloads and to locally available cloud content. Configure those rules only when you understand the retention period and have another copy where needed.
- Run Storage Sense manually when available, or wait for the selected trigger, then check the free-space total.
Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. It does not automatically manage every folder on every drive. Downloads and cloud content require explicit settings, and files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from cloud offloading. When inactive cloud files are made online-only, their local data is removed but the cloud copy remains; that is different from permanently deleting the file.
Before enabling an aggressive schedule, consider shared PCs, metered connections and folders used by creative or development tools. A cleanup policy that is convenient for a general laptop can be disruptive if another person or application expects a local copy.
4. Handle Windows-managed AI components as system software
Why deleting a model folder is unsafe
Copilot+ AI components combine models and runtimes that Windows services through AI updates. Their location, package relationships and update behavior are not documented as a user-managed cache. Deleting a directory because its name contains “AI,” “model” or a model identifier can leave an incomplete package, cause update failures, or remove files needed by another Windows feature.
There is no general supported sequence in the current Windows instructions to select Phi Silica or another built-in Copilot+ component, uninstall it, and move it to D: or an external disk. Do not take ownership of protected folders, change permissions, or use registry hacks to force that outcome. Those actions can create a larger recovery problem than the original shortage.
When the model came from an app
A separately installed application may download a model into its own data directory and may offer a model selector, cache limit or alternate storage location. Identify the exact application first. Then use its documented settings or uninstaller, and check whether removing a model also removes chats, indexes or other app data. If the app has no documented relocation option, ask its vendor rather than substituting instructions intended for Windows components.

What a Windows update can change
Windows AI updates can service component files over time, so their disk use may change after an update. That does not make an update cache a safe target for manual deletion. Use Windows Update’s own cleanup and the Storage pages to deal with update-related temporary data; leave active component packages to the operating system.

5. Reclaim space from ordinary personal files
When system cleanup is insufficient, personal files are the supported fallback because you control their copies and can verify them before moving them.
- In Settings > System > Storage, open the category that points to personal data, or choose File Explorer > This PC and inspect the largest folders.
- Sort Downloads, Videos, Pictures, desktop folders and project directories by size and date.
- Keep files that are actively used on the fastest local drive. Move archives, completed projects and other infrequently used material to an external SSD, another internal drive or a verified network location.
- Open several moved files from the destination before deleting the originals. For a large collection, compare folder sizes and use the destination’s backup or integrity features.
- Delete only the confirmed originals, then right-click Recycle Bin > Empty Recycle Bin. Space occupied by deleted files is not reclaimed until the bin is emptied.
Moving personal data does not move Windows AI components. It simply gives the system drive more working room for updates, applications and normal operation. Windows also lets you change default save locations for supported new content in the Storage settings, which can prevent future pressure on C:; existing files must still be moved separately.
6. Use OneDrive Files On-Demand for cloud libraries
For OneDrive content, Files On-Demand can reduce local usage without relocating Windows’ built-in models. A cloud file can appear in File Explorer as a small placeholder and download its full contents only when you open it. This is useful for large photo libraries, shared folders and archives that you need occasionally.
- Online-only: the full file remains in the cloud and uses little local disk space until opened.
- Locally available: the full file is present and can be opened without a connection.
- Always keep on this device: Windows will not make that item online-only through Storage Sense.
Use the OneDrive context-menu command that frees local space only after confirming synchronization has completed. The operation is not a permanent deletion, but opening an online-only file later requires a network connection and enough local room for the download. Files On-Demand changes the local representation of cloud files; it is not a supported storage location for Phi Silica or other Windows AI component packages.

7. Check Recall only if you enabled it
Recall is a separate storage consideration on supported Copilot+ PCs. If you opt in, it stores encrypted snapshots and related contextual data locally. Microsoft states that Recall requires at least 50 GB of free space to enable. When free space falls below 25 GB, automatic snapshot saving pauses.
Those thresholds describe Recall, not a universal minimum for Windows AI models. If Recall is enabled and storage is tight, review its settings and stored snapshots through the Recall interface rather than searching for and deleting its files manually. Decide whether the feature’s history is valuable before changing retention or deleting snapshots; doing so affects Recall’s searchable timeline, not the underlying Copilot+ model installation.
8. Choose an action by risk and reversibility
| Action | What changes | Reversibility | Connection or extra drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanup recommendations: temporary files | Deletes selected expendable temporary data | Usually not needed for recovery; review each item first | No extra drive; internet may be needed later if an app recreates data |
| Cleanup recommendations: previous Windows installation | Removes rollback files for an earlier installation | Rollback is no longer available through those files | No extra drive |
| Storage Sense | Automates temporary-file, Recycle Bin and configured cloud cleanup | Cloud files can be downloaded again; deleted local data may not be recoverable | Network needed to redownload online-only cloud files |
| Move personal files | Places your data on another internal, external or network drive | Reversible while the destination copy remains intact | External, secondary or network storage required |
| OneDrive Files On-Demand | Replaces local cloud copies with smaller placeholders | Full files can be downloaded again | Network needed when opening online-only files |
| Delete built-in Windows AI folders manually | May damage protected components or servicing | Not a supported recovery path | Not recommended |
9. If free space does not return
The Recycle Bin still contains the files
Deleting a large folder in File Explorer normally moves it to the Recycle Bin. Empty the bin, then wait a moment for Storage to recalculate.
Cloud files are still pinned locally
Check whether the files are marked Always keep on this device. Remove that pin only for data you can access online and do not need offline.
The wrong drive was cleaned
Storage Sense focuses on the system drive. If a secondary drive is full, inspect it directly in File Explorer and manage its files or applications using that drive’s own folders and settings.

An application is recreating temporary data
Some apps rebuild caches after cleanup. Close the app, check its own cache or download controls, and monitor the category that grows rather than repeatedly deleting unrelated Windows folders.
An update is pending
Leave adequate working space for Windows Update. Removing protected component files to make room can prevent the update that would otherwise service the system. Prefer temporary files, verified personal-file moves and cloud offloading first.
You suspect a separately installed model
Look at Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the application that installed it. Record the app name and version, then follow that app’s storage documentation. A generic “AI model cleanup” script cannot reliably distinguish an app-owned model from a Windows-managed component.
10. A maintenance routine that prevents repeat shortages
- Check Settings > System > Storage monthly and after major Windows updates.
- Run Cleanup recommendations deliberately instead of accepting every suggestion automatically.
- Set Storage Sense to a schedule that fits your backup and offline-file habits.
- Keep Downloads as a temporary inbox: archive or delete installers and media after you verify them.
- Use cloud placeholders for libraries that do not need to be offline, while pinning active projects locally.
- Keep at least one independent copy of important personal files before moving or deleting them.
- Leave Windows-managed AI components alone; monitor their behavior through supported Windows settings and updates.
Bottom line
Free space by measuring the system drive, applying Cleanup recommendations, configuring Storage Sense, and moving verified personal files—not by hunting for model folders. Copilot+ models and runtimes are serviced as part of Windows, and no general supported method relocates them. OneDrive Files On-Demand can make cloud files online-only, while Recall has its own 50 GB enablement and 25 GB pause thresholds. If a model belongs to a separate app, use that app’s documented controls.
