Start at Settings > Storage to see what is taking up room, then use Files > Clean to review Motorola’s cleanup suggestions. Delete or move only files you recognize, and be cautious with app data and backed-up photos. Motorola does not state one free-space amount that works for every update, so follow the space estimate or message shown on your phone.
Free up space with a quick, careful cleanup
- Check what is using storage. Open Settings > Storage and note the largest categories. Labels and screens can differ by Motorola model and software version. Motorola’s user guide describes this as the starting point for checking storage.
- Review the cleanup suggestions. Open the Files app and tap Clean. Review suggestions such as downloads or unused apps, then choose whether to delete, move, or uninstall each item. Motorola says the Files app’s settings include controls for suggestion notifications if you are not seeing suggestions. See Motorola’s current storage instructions.
- Remove items you no longer need. In Files, browse categories such as apps, images, and videos. Uninstall apps you do not use, or delete specific files after checking what they are. You can also clear an app’s cache; see the distinction below before choosing an app cleanup option.
- Review large photos and videos. Check which items you want to keep before removing them. If you use Google Photos, deleting a photo there can also delete it from your Google account, according to Motorola’s user guide.
- Consider a microSD card only if your model supports one. You may be able to move eligible media such as photos, videos, or music. Check your phone’s compatibility and Motorola’s SD-card guidance first; portable SD storage is not a place to store apps under the cited instructions.
- Try the update again. Motorola’s update guidance recommends using Wi-Fi when available and having enough battery. Use the space estimate or error message shown on your device rather than relying on a universal storage target.
What is safe to clear—and what can erase important data?
Clear cache removes temporary files
Clearing an app’s cache removes cached files. It is different from clearing the app’s storage, though the amount of space recovered can vary. Motorola’s current instructions place these controls under the app’s Storage & cache settings.
Clear storage removes app data
Clear storage removes saved data for that app. Before using it, check whether the app contains drafts, downloads, offline files, or other information you need. Do not choose it as if it were another name for clearing temporary files.

Do not assume that deleting an item in Google Photos removes only its copy on the phone: Motorola warns that the deletion can affect the item in your Google account as well. On supported interfaces, Storage manager can automatically remove local copies of photos and videos after they have been backed up. Its available timing choices are 30, 60, or 90 days; availability and labels vary by model and software version. See Motorola’s current storage instructions.

Why the menu may look different
Motorola’s storage instructions cover more than one interface. Current guidance uses Files > Clean and app-specific Storage & cache controls. Some older instructions instead use Settings > Storage, Internal shared storage, or a Cached data option. Treat these as alternatives for different software versions, not as steps every phone will show. Motorola’s older storage guidance describes the legacy paths.
Options such as Storage manager and microSD-card support also vary. If a menu or card option is missing, check the instructions for your exact phone model rather than assuming the feature is available.

How much free space does an Android update need?
Motorola’s update guidance surfaced here does not give a universal free-space threshold. Update size and the amount of space needed can depend on the update and device, so do not treat any single figure as a guarantee. Follow the estimate or instructions on your phone’s update screen, and consult support for your model if it still reports insufficient space after cleanup.
