Free space is part of the HyperOS installation process, not just the download. Xiaomi says the update package is downloaded and then extracted on the phone, so the process can need more than twice the package size; larger updates may require more than 15 GB available. That figure is not a universal minimum for every Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO device.
Start by checking the phone’s storage categories, then review Xiaomi’s Cleaner and Deep clean suggestions. Remove or move only data you have checked, retry the update, and troubleshoot the connection or an incomplete package if installation still will not proceed.
Why a HyperOS update needs more free space than its download
An update file is not used directly from its downloaded form. Xiaomi explains that the package is downloaded and then extracted locally during installation. Its official wording says: “During the update, the update package must first be downloaded and then extracted locally, a process that requires more than twice the size of the update package itself.” See Xiaomi Global Support’s explanation of insufficient storage during updates (publication date not shown; accessed 2026-10-13).
For a small package, the required working space may be considerably less than 15 GB. Xiaomi also says that larger updates may require more than 15 GB of available storage. Treat that as a possibility for a large package, not as a fixed requirement for every HyperOS update or every phone. The exact need depends on the package and the space already occupied by the operating system, apps, media, downloads, and temporary files.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Easily move files off your device, freeing up valuable space so you can store your favorite photos, movies, music, games, and more.
- Say goodbye to emailing photos between devices. Once they’re on your SanDisk Phone Drive, read speeds up to 100MB/s let you transfer files fast. (1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support required.)
- AUTOMATIC BACKUP. Automatically back up your latest photos, videos, music, documents, and contacts with the SanDisk Memory Zone app. (Download and installation required. Set up automatic backup within app settings. See official SanDisk website for Memory Zone details.)
- DATA RECOVERY. Recover deleted files with the included RescuePRO Deluxe software.(Registration and download required; terms and conditions apply. See RescuePRO page on SanDisk site.)
- CONVENIENT DESIGN. Attach your drive to your keyring to help keep it secure so you can have storage wherever you are, whenever you need it.
Storage and RAM are different. Storage holds apps, photos, videos, downloads, and update files; RAM is working memory used while apps and processes run. Closing recent apps or using a RAM-clearing control does not remove stored files or create the disk space needed for an update. Xiaomi distinguishes these functions in its Phone Storage/RAM Introduction and FAQs.
Before deleting anything: protect the files you need
Freeing space is safe only when you know what each item is and whether you still need it. Use the following preparation checklist before confirming a cleanup:
- Open important photos, videos, documents, and recordings so you know which copies are valid.
- Make a separate copy of irreplaceable files, or verify that an existing backup can be opened from another device or service.
- Check messaging and social apps for media that exists only inside the app or its local folders.
- Do not select a whole category merely because it is large. Review individual items first.
- Keep enough battery and use a reliable Wi-Fi connection before starting the update itself.
These backup checks are prudent preparation rather than a complete backup procedure supplied by Xiaomi’s cleanup pages. Xiaomi identifies media and apps as possible cleanup targets, but the cited pages do not define one backup method that works for every model, region, or HyperOS version.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStep 1: Find what is consuming your phone’s storage
Begin with the storage summary so you can target the largest categories instead of deleting at random. On some Xiaomi phones, the route is Settings > About phone > Storage > Clear. Xiaomi UK documents this route in its low-storage instructions.
Labels and locations can vary by model, region, and HyperOS release. If you do not see that exact route, open Settings and use its search field for “Storage,” then open the result under About phone or the system storage section. The goal is the same: display category totals and the files or apps behind them before removing anything.
Record the available-space figure and identify whether the pressure comes mainly from videos, downloads, apps, app data, cached files, installation packages, or another category. This baseline lets you check whether a cleanup actually created space and helps you avoid repeatedly deleting small items that make little difference.
Step 2: Use Cleaner and Deep clean selectively
Run Cleaner, then inspect its proposals
Xiaomi’s UK support path is Security > Cleaner > Clean up. Cleaner can surface temporary or removable items, but its suggestions are still a list for you to review, not an instruction to select everything. Open the details for each group, check the size, and deselect anything you recognize as important.

After the scan, compare the proposed total with the storage categories you saw earlier. If Cleaner reports only a small amount, move to larger media or unused apps rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
Open Deep clean for large, specific items
Xiaomi’s documented route is Security > Deep clean. The global FAQ says Deep clean may suggest videos, infrequently used apps, installation packages, app data, and large files. It advises checking items one by one and selectively deleting files and apps you do not use often; see Xiaomi’s storage and RAM FAQ and the UK cleanup guidance.
Use Deep clean as an inventory first. Sort or open the largest entries, identify their location and owner, and only then mark them for deletion. A large video may be a duplicate, but it may also be the only copy of a family event. An installation package may be an old download, but deleting it can remove the local file you intended to use later.
What you can usually review first
The following targets are specifically identified in Xiaomi’s cleanup guidance. The safest choice depends on your own files and app usage, so treat each as a review category rather than an automatic “delete all” command.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Storage target | What to check | Safer action |
|---|---|---|
| Large videos and other media | Whether the item is duplicated and whether a backup or separate copy opens correctly | Move or copy important media first; delete only confirmed duplicates or unwanted files |
| Downloads and large files | Whether the file is still needed for work, travel, study, or offline use | Keep required files and remove obsolete downloads after opening or verifying them |
| Unused apps | Whether you still need the account, offline data, or locally saved content | Uninstall apps you no longer use; check for app-specific data you may need before removal |
| Cached files | Which app created the cache and whether it contains only rebuildable temporary data | Clear the cache for suitable apps, then recheck the resulting free space |
| Installation packages | Whether a package is an old download or the only copy you intend to keep | Delete obsolete packages after confirming they are no longer needed |
| App data | Whether it contains offline downloads, drafts, saved games, or sign-in-related local content | Review the app and its data carefully; do not remove it solely because the category is large |
Large videos and files
Videos often provide the biggest immediate gain. Open the largest files from Deep clean or your file manager, check their dates and contents, and confirm that a backup copy is usable before deleting the originals. Include downloaded movies, screen recordings, camera exports, and files received through messaging apps in your review.
Apps you no longer use
Uninstalling an unused app can recover both the application space and, depending on how Android handles that app’s data, associated local files. Before removing it, check whether it holds offline maps, drafts, exported projects, or other content that is not synchronized elsewhere. If you reinstall later, the app may not restore local data automatically.
Cached files
A cache is generally temporary data that an app can recreate, but the word does not guarantee that every item is disposable in your particular app. Review the app name and the amount of space involved. Clear a cache when you understand what will be removed, then reopen the app if you need to confirm that essential content remains.

Installation packages and app data
Old update packages, downloaded installers, and app data can be large. Deep clean may group them together, so inspect each entry instead of accepting a combined selection. Keep a package if it is the only copy you deliberately saved; remove it when it is an obsolete download and the app or system no longer needs it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether automatic system downloads are refilling storage
If free space keeps falling after cleanup, an automatically downloaded system package may be occupying it again. Xiaomi’s Redmi 13C 5G support article warns that automatic system downloads over Wi-Fi can fill storage over time and recommends checking available storage regularly. Its device-specific path is Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > three-dot menu > Update settings; see Xiaomi’s automatic-download instructions.
The Redmi 13C 5G page is an example for that device, not proof that every HyperOS phone exposes identical controls. On your phone, open the equivalent Update settings screen if it exists and review automatic-download options. If a partially downloaded package is listed, follow the on-screen controls to finish or remove it rather than deleting unrelated personal files.
Retry the HyperOS update from the correct screen
After cleanup, return to the update control instead of relying on a notification that may refer to an earlier attempt. Xiaomi’s general instructions place update controls at Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Xiaomi HyperOS icon > three-dot menu. The additional-settings path is described in Xiaomi’s HyperOS update-settings guide.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or About tablet.
- Tap the Xiaomi HyperOS icon or update entry.
- Open the three-dot menu and review the available update settings.
- Start or resume the update when the storage figure is comfortably above the package’s working-space requirement.
Keep the phone connected to a stable network and avoid interrupting the download. The update may need additional temporary space during extraction, so do not immediately refill the newly available capacity with downloads or large recordings.
If the update is still stuck
Storage is still insufficient
Return to the storage screen and check the available figure after cleanup. Xiaomi’s general estimate is more than twice the package size, with larger updates sometimes needing over 15 GB, so a small amount of newly freed space may not be enough. Look again for large videos, downloads, unused apps, cached files, installation packages, and app data rather than assuming the first cleanup removed everything.
The network interrupted the download
Xiaomi’s troubleshooting page for the Xiaomi 14T Pro lists network conditions as one possible cause of an update becoming stuck and recommends switching to a stable network. Apply that as a general troubleshooting possibility, while recognizing that the cited instructions are written for the Xiaomi 14T Pro. Reconnect to reliable Wi-Fi, then retry from the HyperOS update screen.

The package is incomplete or corrupted
The same Xiaomi 14T Pro guidance says to redownload an incomplete or corrupted package. If the update repeatedly stops after an interruption, use the available redownload or retry control rather than repeatedly trying to install the same partial file. A fresh download may require temporary space again, so confirm storage before starting it.
Battery or another device condition is abnormal
Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 14T Pro troubleshooting page also mentions battery abnormality among possible factors. Check the phone’s battery and charging behavior, and follow any warning shown on screen. Because this advice comes from a model-specific troubleshooting page, do not assume that every device reports the same condition or uses the same recovery wording. The page is available at Xiaomi’s explanation of a Xiaomi 14T Pro update stuck during installation.

Moving files off the phone instead of deleting them
If the largest items are important, move them to another location before updating. A USB-C flash drive may help, but compatibility is not guaranteed by the cited Xiaomi guidance. Check that your exact phone supports USB On-The-Go (OTG), that the connector fits, and that the drive’s format is supported before buying or relying on one. Copy a small test file, open it from the drive, and only then consider deleting the phone’s original.
A cloud-backup service is another category-level option for keeping photos and videos outside the phone. Verify that the upload completed and that files can be opened from another device before removing local copies. The cited Xiaomi pages do not endorse a particular provider or establish current terms for any named service.
A practical cleanup order
Use this order when you want the largest likely gain with the least risk:
- Check the storage summary and note the available space.
- Verify backups or make separate copies of irreplaceable photos, videos, and documents.
- Review large videos and downloads, deleting only confirmed duplicates or unwanted files.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use after checking for local drafts, offline content, or other app-specific data.
- Run Security > Cleaner > Clean up and inspect each suggestion.
- Open Security > Deep clean and review large files, installation packages, app data, and infrequently used apps individually.
- Check the HyperOS update settings for automatic downloads if storage keeps disappearing.
- Recheck available storage, then retry through Settings > About phone/tablet > Xiaomi HyperOS.
This sequence separates high-value personal files from temporary cleanup candidates and gives you a measurable storage check before each update attempt.
