The cleanest way to reclaim space from a Steam demo is to remove the demo itself: open Library, right-click the installed demo, choose Manage, select Uninstall, and confirm. Steam removes the local demo files and, according to Steamworks documentation, automatically removes an uninstalled demo from your library.
If the drive is still nearly full, use Steam > Settings > Storage to add a library folder on another drive and move larger games. Use Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache only for cached download or configuration problems; clearing the cache is not the normal way to uninstall a demo. Do not uninstall the Steam application to remove one demo, because Steam warns that doing so can remove all installed game content.
Uninstall the demo through Steam
Removing a demo from the Steam client is a targeted cleanup operation. It affects that installation rather than your entire Steam library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Library. Switch to the Steam Library view and locate the demo you downloaded.
- Open the management menu. Right-click the demo, or open its available management menu if you are using a controller or a compact library layout.
- Choose Manage. Select Manage from the context menu.
- Select Uninstall. Choose Uninstall and confirm when Steam asks whether to remove the local installation.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Keep the client open until the uninstall operation completes. Do not interrupt it by shutting down the computer or forcing Steam to close.
- Check the result. Recheck free space in your operating system or in Steam’s Settings > Storage view.
Steamworks states that “when a demo is uninstalled, it will automatically get removed from your library.” That means you should not need a second cleanup command for the same demo. If the title still appears in a non-installed or discoverable state, that is different from the demo occupying local disk space.

Uninstalling is different from removing a demo from your account
Steamworks also documents a separate control: right-click > Manage > Remove from account. This explicitly removes the demo from the account. It is not the same decision as simply uninstalling the local files.
Use Uninstall when the goal is disk space
Choose Uninstall when you may want to download the demo again later or when you only need to remove its local files. This is the narrowest action and is the appropriate first step when a drive is full after a trial download.
Use Remove from account when you do not want the demo in the account
Choose Remove from account only when you also want the demo explicitly removed from the account’s library relationship. Steamworks identifies this as an account-management action. Consider the distinction before confirming, especially if you may want to find the same demo easily later.

The Steam library folder is the location Steam Support describes for installed games on disk. Because the demo’s files are stored in a library folder, the free-space change should be visible on the drive that contains that library.
Check the operating system
After Steam reports that the uninstall is complete, open the operating system’s storage view or the drive’s properties and compare the available space with the amount available before the uninstall. The exact amount recovered depends on the demo’s installed size and any other activity on the drive.

Check Steam’s Storage view
Open Steam > Settings > Storage. This view helps identify which Steam library locations exist and where installed content is stored. If the computer has more than one library folder, verify that you are checking the drive that held the demo rather than a different volume.
Allow for other disk activity
Free space can change while Steam is downloading an update, staging another installation, or processing content. If the number moves during your check, wait for the active operation to finish before deciding that the uninstall failed. Do not manually delete folders from a Steam library to compensate; use Steam’s management controls so the client keeps its installation records consistent.

When uninstalling one demo is not enough
A small demo may not recover enough capacity for a large game update or another installation. Steam Support documents a Storage Manager workflow for adding another library folder and installing or moving games to an alternate hard drive.
- Open the Storage settings. In Steam, go to Settings > Storage.
- Review existing library locations. Identify the current library folder and the drive where larger games are installed.
- Add another library folder. Use the Storage interface to add a library location on a second internal drive or on a connected external drive with sufficient available capacity.
- Choose content to move. Select a larger installed game rather than repeatedly removing small demos when your objective is to create substantial working space.
- Move the installation through Steam. Use the Storage controls to move the selected game to the new library folder, then let Steam complete the transfer.
- Use the new location for future installs. When installing another demo or game, select the library on the drive with adequate free capacity.
Moving a game preserves its local installation but requires another usable drive. Uninstalling a demo releases space immediately but means downloading it again if you later want to play it.
Internal drive versus portable external SSD
An additional internal drive can be convenient when the computer has an open slot and you want a permanent library location. A portable external SSD is an optional capacity solution when adding internal storage is impractical. It is not required to uninstall a demo.

Before moving a library to an external SSD, confirm that the drive is connected, has enough free capacity, and remains available when you launch the games stored there. Also check the computer’s available ports and the cable arrangement you intend to use. The Steam Storage workflow is the documented way to add the location and move installations; do not treat a file copy performed outside Steam as a completed library move.
Clear the download cache only for cache or download problems
Steam provides Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. This action addresses cached download and configuration data and can help when Steam downloads behave oddly. It is not the standard replacement for uninstalling an installed demo.
- Open Steam and go to Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Choose Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm the action when prompted.
- Sign in again if Steam asks you to do so, then retry the affected download.
Clearing the cache should not be presented as a way to remove the demo’s installed files. If your only objective is to reclaim the space used by the demo, return to the Library and use Manage > Uninstall.
Why the drive can still look full
Several different conditions can look like a failed demo uninstall. Use the symptom that matches what you see rather than repeating unrelated cleanup actions.
| What you see | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The demo is still installed in Library | The uninstall did not complete or was canceled. | Open the demo’s management menu again, choose Manage > Uninstall, and wait for completion. |
| The demo is no longer installed, but free space changed little | The demo may have been small, or another process is using space on the same drive. | Check the operating system’s free-space view and Steam’s Settings > Storage view; identify larger installations to move. |
| Steam is repeatedly downloading or behaving inconsistently | Cached download or configuration data may be causing a download problem. | Use Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then sign in again if prompted. |
| A game update cannot fit after the demo is removed | The remaining library content still needs more capacity than the drive provides. | Add another library folder in Settings > Storage and move a larger game to the alternate drive. |
| You are checking the wrong disk | Steam can use more than one library folder, and the demo may have been installed elsewhere. | Review every library location in Settings > Storage and check the corresponding operating-system drive. |
| You are considering reinstalling Steam | Reinstalling is a broad repair step, not a one-demo cleanup method. | Uninstall the demo first; preserve the steamapps folder if a full Steam reinstall is genuinely necessary. |
Do not uninstall Steam to remove one demo
Steam Support warns: “This process will remove Steam and any installed game content from your machine.” Uninstalling the Steam application can therefore remove every installed game and demo, not just the title you no longer want.

Use the Steam application uninstall only when you deliberately intend to remove Steam and its installed content or are following a separate repair plan. It is disproportionate for reclaiming the space used by a single demo.
If a complete reinstall is unavoidable
Steam advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first when preserving existing installations during a repair or reinstall. This is a preparation step for the broader reinstall process; it does not replace the normal demo-uninstall workflow.
Because the Steam Support warning applies to installed game content, verify what you are willing to remove before confirming any application-level uninstall. A full reinstall can require redownloading content if the existing installation files are not preserved.
Check save behavior before removing related data
Uninstalling the demo removes its installed program files, but save handling can vary by game. Steamworks documentation notes that demo saves may share cloud storage with the full application. That means you should check the individual game’s save behavior before assuming that every local or cloud save is disposable.

The safest approach is to leave save data alone unless the game’s own instructions clearly explain what is shared and what can be removed.

Choose the least disruptive storage option
The right action depends on whether you need a quick cleanup, a larger capacity reserve, or a download repair.
| Option | Space recovered now | Reversibility | Risk to other content | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall the demo | Releases the demo’s installed files. | You can download the demo again later. | Scoped to that demo when performed from its management menu. | Usually the simplest option; no extra hardware is needed. |
| Remove the demo from the account | Handles the demo’s account listing; local cleanup should still be managed through Steam’s uninstall control. | Less convenient if you later want the same demo associated with the account. | Targets the selected demo’s account relationship. | Use only when account removal is actually intended. |
| Move larger games to another library | Can free considerably more room than deleting one small demo. | Local files remain available on the alternate drive. | Requires selecting the correct game and destination; the other drive becomes part of the setup. | Good for maintaining a larger library, but it requires another usable drive. |
| Clear Download Cache | Addresses cached download or configuration data, not the normal installed-demo removal. | Downloads can be retried after signing in again if prompted. | Not intended to remove installed games. | Useful for download problems, not routine storage cleanup. |
| Uninstall Steam | Can remove Steam and installed game content from the machine. | Preserving installations requires preparation and may otherwise mean redownloading. | Highest risk: it can affect all installed content. | Only appropriate for a deliberate full removal or reinstall. |
Practical workflows for common situations
You downloaded one demo on a nearly full system drive
Uninstall that demo from Library, confirm the free-space change, and stop there if the drive now has the capacity you need. There is no reason to clear the download cache or remove Steam when the problem is one installed title.
You need room for a large update
Remove the demo first, then open Settings > Storage. If the update still cannot fit, add a library folder on another drive and move a larger game. This preserves the larger installation instead of repeatedly deleting small items that provide little capacity.
You want to keep a large library on a small internal drive
Use Storage Manager to create a second library on another internal drive or an external SSD. Move selected games through Steam and direct future installations to the library with more capacity. Keep that second drive connected and available whenever you want to launch content stored there.
Steam’s downloads are failing after the cleanup
Do not assume the uninstall caused the download problem. Use Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, sign in again if prompted, and retry. If the drive remains full, return to Settings > Storage and inspect the library locations and larger installations.
You are preparing a full Steam repair
Do not begin by deleting Steam blindly. Steam Support says the application uninstall removes Steam and installed game content. If a complete reinstall is necessary and you want to preserve existing installations, move steamapps outside the Steam directory first, following Steam’s preservation guidance.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Open Library and locate the installed demo.
- Use Manage > Uninstall, then wait for Steam to finish.
- Check free space on the correct operating-system drive and in Settings > Storage.
- Use Manage > Remove from account only when you intentionally want the demo removed from the account.
- Use Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache for download or cache problems, not as the normal uninstall method.
- Add another library folder and move larger games when deleting the demo is not enough.
- Consider a portable external SSD only as an optional additional-library solution.
- Never uninstall Steam merely to remove one demo; preserve
steamappsbefore any full reinstall intended to keep existing installations. - Check the game’s save behavior before assuming demo saves can be discarded, because demo saves may share cloud storage with the full application.
