You can reclaim SSD space without uninstalling games by first checking what Windows says is using the drive, reviewing cleanup choices before removing anything, and moving supported game libraries or personal files to another drive. Start with Settings > System > Storage: the category breakdown helps you choose the right fix instead of guessing from your game list. Windows labels and launcher options can vary by version, so confirm the choices on your laptop before applying them.
1. Find out what is filling the SSD
Open Settings > System > Storage and select the drive you want to inspect. Windows can show categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved, along with disk type, capacity, and current usage. The available categories and labels may differ between Windows versions. For a quick check of free capacity, open File Explorer > This PC. Microsoft explains the Storage view in its Windows Storage settings guide.
Use the category breakdown to decide what to inspect next. A large Installed apps category may include games, launchers, and other applications; a large Temporary files category points toward Windows cleanup options. Do not assume a game is the problem simply because games are large: check the displayed categories and their contents first. Windows may show estimated space savings for cleanup choices, but the amount you actually recover depends on the files present, update state, and what you select.
Recommended Free Tools
Think of the breakdown as a starting map, not a list of instructions to delete. If Installed apps is the largest category, it may be worth checking which programs account for that usage and whether the launcher offers a move option. If Windows identifies temporary files or large personal files, inspect those categories instead. The right action depends on what is actually on your laptop; removing a small cache will not solve a capacity problem caused by a large game library, and moving a game will not remove unrelated temporary files.

Record a baseline
Before making changes, note the drive’s free space in This PC and the categories that appear largest in Storage. This gives you a simple way to see whether the action you chose helped. Windows cleanup does not guarantee a particular number of gigabytes; it can only reclaim space represented by the items you remove or move.
For a useful comparison, change one thing at a time and check free space again after the cleanup or transfer completes. If you remove reviewed temporary files and then move a game, you will be able to see which action made the difference. This also helps you avoid repeating a cleanup that did not address the category consuming most of the SSD.
2. Review Windows cleanup choices before deleting
From Storage, open Cleanup recommendations if that option appears. Windows may group potential actions under temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps, and show estimated savings. Open each category and review the actual items before selecting them. A recommendation is not a substitute for checking that you no longer need a file or application. Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guide describes the available cleanup approaches.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the estimated savings to compare the choices, but do not treat the estimate as a guaranteed result or as a reason to select every item. Check file names and locations where Windows provides them. Large files may be personal items you still need; unused apps may include a launcher or utility you want to keep; cloud-synced files may be managed by settings that affect their local availability. If an item is unclear, leave it in place until you know what it is and what removing it would do.
Temporary files and previous Windows installations
Temporary-file cleanup can be useful, but read the item descriptions and checkboxes before confirming removal. One particularly consequential choice is a previous Windows installation: deleting it removes the option to roll back to the prior Windows version. If you may need that rollback, leave the previous-installation files in place until you are sure you want to give up that option.
Windows 10 also includes Disk Cleanup for temporary and system files. Review the descriptions and selected checkboxes before confirming; do not select every category automatically. The exact screens and labels can vary with Windows version and system state, so follow the descriptions shown on your device.
These cleanup tools are best treated as selective maintenance, not as a substitute for identifying a large space user. If the list shows only a modest amount to remove, do not expect it to free the space of a large game installation. Conversely, if the reviewed temporary-file categories have meaningful estimates, cleanup may be a straightforward first step before moving anything. Built-in Windows cleanup does not require buying a utility.
Configure Storage Sense deliberately
Storage Sense can run automatically when configured and can remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Its behavior depends on the retention settings you choose. Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default, and Storage Sense acts on the system drive, usually C:. Inspect its settings before enabling automatic cleanup so an unattended rule does not remove items you expected to keep. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide explains its controls.
Rank #2
- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
In particular, do not treat Downloads as disposable just because it is a cleanup category you can configure. It may contain installers, saved documents, or other files you still need. Similarly, the Recycle Bin can contain files you have not yet decided to discard. Review the relevant contents and retention settings rather than assuming that automatic cleanup understands which items matter to you.
Storage Sense is not a general-purpose organizer for every drive and every file. Because it operates on the system drive, usually C:, do not assume turning it on will automatically tidy a separate library drive. Also remember that its behavior is governed by the choices you enable: check the retention period and categories, and leave automatic removal disabled if the settings do not match your preferences. You can still use Windows’ reviewable cleanup controls without setting an automatic schedule.
3. Move games through their launcher
If the game library itself is taking most of the space, use the game platform’s own storage or library controls where available. Moving an installation through its launcher is preferable to manually cutting and pasting game folders: the launcher can update its records and verify the files at the destination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore choosing a destination, confirm that it has enough available capacity for the game and that you are comfortable relying on that location whenever you play. If it is an external drive, it must be connected and recognized for the launcher to access the installation. A separate internal drive or partition is an option only if your laptop and launcher support it. Do not assume that every platform offers identical move controls.
Move an installed Steam game
- Create or select a Steam Library folder on a drive with enough free capacity. In Steam’s storage controls, add a library location on that drive if one is not already available.
- Open Steam’s storage or installed-game controls, choose the game, and use the move option to select the destination library. Steam’s client interface may change, so use the current controls shown in your client.
- Let the move finish before disconnecting the destination drive or interrupting Steam. A moved installation may need a file integrity check before it is ready to launch.
- Launch the game from Steam and confirm it starts. If Steam asks to verify or reacquire files, let it complete before troubleshooting further.
Steam documents this process in Moving a Steam Installation and Games. The same support guidance cautions that installing Steam on an external hard drive can cause performance issues, so do not assume an external destination will feel identical to the internal SSD.
Steam requires a library destination for the move, so make sure the target location is available to Steam rather than simply choosing a folder in File Explorer and dragging the game there. The launcher’s current storage controls are the reliable guide to what it can move. If a move does not complete or the game is not ready immediately afterward, allow the client to run its file check before deciding that the installation has failed.
Protect saves and game-specific data
Moving a game installation is not the same as moving its saves. Steam warns that third-party saves not stored in Steam Cloud may be in DocumentsMy Games or in another location specified by the game publisher. Before moving or changing a game installation, check that game’s save and cloud-sync status. There is no single save-folder location established for every game, so do not delete folders with the assumption that the launcher can recreate every personal save.
This distinction matters if you are cleaning a large personal-files category as well as relocating a game. A folder associated with a game may contain saves or other player data rather than files the launcher can download again. Check the game’s own documentation or publisher guidance when the save location or sync status is uncertain. A successful library move does not by itself confirm that every separately stored save is backed up.

Xbox app and Microsoft Store games
For a game installed through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, check that game’s current Manage options or its entry in Windows Installed apps. Do not rely on a universal move path: the available controls can depend on the game, app build, and Windows version. An Xbox Wire announcement dated November 18, 2021 described moving and repairing eligible games through the Xbox app’s Manage option during an Insider feature rollout, while noting that eligibility varied. That announcement is historical evidence, not a current compatibility list for every game or app version: Xbox Wire’s 2021 announcement.
If you do not see a move control for a specific title, do not infer that manually relocating its protected or managed files will work. Check the current options in the app and Windows settings for that game. The available action may differ between games, so one title’s successful move does not establish that another title from the same service can be moved in the same way.
4. Move personal files or use cloud-only files
Games are not the only large files on a gaming laptop. Microsoft recommends moving infrequently used photos, videos, music, and documents to connected external storage. Once moved, those files are unavailable from the laptop while the storage device is disconnected. You can also choose where some new content is saved in Windows, which helps keep future files from accumulating on the system drive. See Microsoft’s drive-space guidance for these options.
For external storage, consider the ordinary access trade-off before moving anything: the laptop cannot open files on a disconnected drive. Keep files you need regularly on an accessible location, and treat a removable drive as a place for content you can tolerate being unavailable when it is not attached. The right choice depends on how you use the files, not only on how much room they occupy.
Use OneDrive Files On-Demand selectively
Files On-Demand can make OneDrive files online-only, reducing the local space they use. Opening an online-only file requires a network connection. Storage Sense can also change some locally available cloud content to online-only according to its settings; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. Check the sync status and availability setting before changing a file, especially if you expect to use it while offline. Microsoft explains these controls in its Storage Sense and drive-space guidance.
Online-only is a local-storage choice, not the same as deleting the cloud file. It does mean, however, that you need a working network connection to open that content. Before changing availability, confirm that OneDrive has finished syncing and that the file is not marked to stay on the device. Keep essential files available locally if you expect to work or play somewhere without connectivity; cloud offloading is most convenient for content you can fetch when needed.
5. Choose the right place for games and files
There is no single best destination for every laptop. The choice depends on what you are moving, how often you need it, whether the drive stays connected, and what your launcher supports.
| Option | Space recovered | Access and trade-offs | Cost and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows cleanup | Depends on the selected files and Windows’ estimates; no fixed amount is established. | Does not relocate a game library. Review each category, particularly previous Windows installations and Recycle Bin contents. | Built-in Windows tools are free. Labels and options vary by Windows version. |
| Another internal drive or partition supported by the launcher | Depends on the size of the game or files moved. | The destination is available while the laptop can access it. Use launcher controls where available. | Requires an available, compatible destination with enough capacity. |
| Portable external storage | Depends on the files or supported game installations moved. | The device must remain connected to access its contents. Steam cautions about potential performance issues when Steam is installed on an external hard drive. | Requires a suitable laptop port, enough capacity, and support from the launcher. Performance uplift is not established. |
| Cloud files set to online-only | Depends on how much synced content is no longer kept locally. | Online-only files require network access; files set to Always keep on this device remain local. | Requires the cloud service and a working connection when opening online-only items. |
| Internal SSD upgrade | Depends on the capacity added and laptop support. | Can provide a longer-term capacity change, but installation and compatibility are device-specific. | Check the laptop maker’s service manual for slot availability, drive size and interface, capacity constraints, and installation requirements. No compatible part can be identified without the laptop model. |
A portable external SSD may be a practical destination for selected files or a game library if your laptop has a suitable port and the launcher supports that location. You will need the external drive connected to use what is stored there. Do not assume a performance improvement, universal compatibility, or that an external drive will behave like the internal SSD.

When comparing cleanup with relocation, think about the kind of space each can free. Cleanup removes reviewed items that are no longer needed; moving a game or personal file keeps it but changes where it lives. Cloud-only availability can reduce local copies of synced files, with network access as the trade-off. These options solve different problems, so use the Storage breakdown and the amount each category represents to decide which one is worth doing first.
Cost and compatibility also differ. Reviewing Windows cleanup settings costs nothing, while an external drive requires a purchase if you do not already own suitable storage. An internal SSD upgrade may be a longer-term investment, but it depends on whether the laptop supports replacement or expansion and on the exact drive specifications it accepts. Confirm the port, available capacity, and launcher support before buying a portable device; consult the laptop maker’s service information before buying an internal part.
If space pressure keeps returning, consider whether your laptop can accept a larger or additional internal SSD. The model’s service manual is the right place to check fit, interface, available slots, and installation requirements. Without the exact laptop model, compatibility and installation details cannot be specified.

6. Stop the system drive filling up again
- Set a destination for some new content. Windows lets you choose where some new content is saved; use a drive with room if the setting is available for the file type you expect to add.
- Keep a deliberate buffer. Check free space in This PC after large game updates or file transfers. The sources do not establish a universal free-space target, so use the remaining capacity and Windows’ own warnings rather than an invented threshold.
- Review automatic cleanup rules. If Storage Sense is enabled, confirm its retention settings still match what you intend to keep.
- Keep track of external libraries. A game or file stored on removable storage is unavailable when that drive is disconnected or not recognized.
A short check after a major change can prevent confusion later. Once a game move finishes, confirm that the launcher lists the destination and that the game starts. After moving personal files, make sure the destination drive or cloud service is where you expect it to be. Then recheck the remaining capacity in This PC and Storage. If you later change an automatic cleanup or cloud availability setting, remember that it can affect how files are kept locally.
7. If temporary files keep coming back
If the Temp folder rapidly fills again soon after cleanup, Microsoft says Microsoft Store app package files may be responsible. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting case, not a reason to run cleanup repeatedly or delete system folders by hand. Microsoft’s drive-space troubleshooting guidance gives a sequence involving a Microsoft Store reset, wsreset.exe, the Windows Update troubleshooter, and a restart.
- Reset Microsoft Store using the Windows troubleshooting steps appropriate to your version.
- Run
wsreset.exeas described in Microsoft’s guidance. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow its on-screen instructions.
- Restart the laptop, then check Storage again to see whether the Temp folder continues to grow.
Use Microsoft’s current instructions for the exact controls on your Windows version; the steps and labels may change. If the folder still grows rapidly, avoid repeatedly deleting files from system locations without identifying what is recreating them.
How much space will this free?
There is no reliable fixed figure. The result depends on your personal files, the cleanup categories you select, Windows’ update state, and how your games and launchers are set up. Windows may provide estimated savings for individual cleanup categories; treat those as guidance for the items shown on your laptop, not a promise of a total. Microsoft Support puts the general benefit simply: “Freeing up space can help your device run better and stay secure.”

Start by measuring usage in Windows Storage, then remove only items you have reviewed. If games are the main space users, move eligible installations with the launcher rather than manually relocating folders. Move infrequently used personal files or selected libraries to compatible external storage only if you accept the connection and access trade-offs. For persistent capacity needs, check whether your exact laptop supports an internal SSD upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Storage Sense delete files in my Downloads folder automatically?
Not by default. Storage Sense can remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its settings, but Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default. Check the retention options before enabling automatic cleanup, and review Downloads yourself before removing anything.
Can I move a Steam game without uninstalling it?
Yes. Add or select a Steam Library folder on a drive with enough capacity, then use Steam’s storage or installed-game controls to move the game. Let the move finish and allow any file integrity check to complete. Steam cautions that installing Steam on an external hard drive can cause performance issues.
Can I move every Xbox app or Microsoft Store game to another drive?
No universal move option is established for every game. Check the current game’s Manage options in the Xbox app or its Windows Installed apps entry. Available controls can vary by title, app build, and Windows version.
Will moving a game also move or protect its save files?
Not necessarily. Game saves may be stored separately from the installation. Steam notes that third-party saves not stored in Steam Cloud may be in Documents\My Games or another location specified by the publisher. Check the game’s save and sync status before changing files.
Do online-only OneDrive files work without internet access?
No. Online-only files require a network connection to open. Check sync status before changing availability, and keep files marked Always keep on this device available locally when you expect to need them offline.
How many gigabytes will these steps free?
There is no fixed amount. Savings depend on your files, the cleanup categories you select, Windows’ update state, and your game and launcher setup. Use the estimates Windows shows for the specific items on your laptop rather than relying on a general promise.
Should I buy an external SSD or upgrade the laptop’s internal SSD?
Either can be an option, but neither is universal. External storage requires a suitable laptop port, enough capacity, and launcher support; it must be connected to access its contents. For an internal upgrade, check the laptop maker’s service manual for slot availability, drive size and interface, capacity constraints, and installation requirements before choosing a part.
