To free up space on an Apple TV 4K, open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage, identify the apps using the most room, and choose Offload or Delete. Offloading removes an app while keeping its data; deleting removes both the app and its data.
“Downloads” needs a quick distinction. Apple TV 4K stores installed apps locally, while Apple’s TV app library does not let a living-room Apple TV download purchases for offline viewing. A movie or episode downloaded on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Android device is using that device’s storage, not the Apple TV’s. Downloads inside an individual third-party streaming app can behave differently, and Apple’s general storage guide does not provide one universal cleanup screen for them.
Why your Apple TV says storage is full
Apple describes the storage model plainly: “Your Apple TV 4K streams video and music, but it stores apps locally.” Streaming a film or song normally does not create a permanent media library on the Apple TV. Installing more apps, however, consumes local storage, and some apps can use additional space for their own data.
The most reliable way to see what can be reclaimed is the Apple TV’s own Manage Storage list. It shows installed apps and the amount of space each one uses, so you can remove a large, rarely used app instead of guessing.

These instructions come from Apple’s Apple TV 4K guidance. Apple notes that features and content can vary by hardware model, tvOS version, and region. If your menus do not match the labels below, identify the Apple TV model and installed tvOS version before trying an alternate path.
First, check which apps are consuming space
- On the Apple TV Home Screen, open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Move down to Usage.
- Choose Manage Storage.
- Review the app list and the storage amount shown for each app.
Apple documents this route in its Free up storage on Apple TV 4K guide. Use the displayed amounts to decide what to offload or delete. Do not assume that a particular category always occupies the most space; the list on your device is the relevant measurement.
Read the list before choosing anything
Use the figures as a decision tool rather than deleting apps in alphabetical order. A large app you never open is a better first candidate than a small app you use every day. The list is also useful when an update fails: it shows which installed apps can be removed to create room for the installation.
There is no Apple-provided universal amount of space recovered by offloading a particular type of app. The result depends on the apps installed on your Apple TV and the data they retain, so check the list again after each change.
Offload or delete: choose based on your data
The two controls solve different problems. Select Offload when you want to reclaim the app’s installation space but would like to preserve the app’s local data. Select Delete when you are finished with the app and accept losing its data.

Apple explains these distinctions in its storage guide and install or delete apps guide. If the app contains settings, profiles, or other local information you care about, offload it rather than deleting it.
What “keeping data” means in practice
Offloading keeps the app’s data on the Apple TV while removing the installed program. That can preserve the information the app stores locally, but it does not promise that every account session or service state will remain active. An app or content provider may still ask you to sign in when it is downloaded again. Apple specifically notes that some apps and providers require sign-in.

Deleting is the irreversible choice for local data. You can reinstall a purchased app without paying for it again, but Apple warns that the deleted data may not be restored. If you are unsure whether an app’s profiles or settings are synchronized elsewhere, offload first.
How to offload one app while keeping its data
- Open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage.
- Highlight the app you want to remove from the installed list.
- Select the trash control beside that app.
- Choose Offload.
The installed application is removed, but its data remains. On the Home Screen, the app stays available with a download icon. Select that icon when you need the app again. Apple says restoration depends on the app remaining available in the App Store, so an offload is not a guarantee that an unavailable app can be brought back.
After offloading, return to Manage Storage to confirm that the app is no longer installed and to see the current amounts. If the storage warning remains, select another app based on the amounts shown rather than assuming the first item was the only cause.
Turn on automatic offloading of unused apps
Apple TV can manage unused installations automatically:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Turn on Offload Unused Apps.
Automatic offloading keeps the unused app icon available for redownload while removing the installed app. The same availability condition applies: if the app is no longer available in the App Store, Apple cannot promise that it can be downloaded again. Use this setting when preserving app data matters more than keeping every app installed at all times.
This setting is useful on a shared Apple TV where different people install apps occasionally. It does not change the distinction between offloading and deleting: automatic offloading is intended to retain the app’s data, while a deliberate deletion removes the app and its data.
How to delete an app and all of its data
Delete from Manage Storage
- Go to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage.
- Select the app’s trash control.
- Choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when Apple TV asks.
Deletion removes the app and all associated data. Before confirming, make sure you are comfortable losing local settings or other information that the app does not synchronize elsewhere. Apple says that a purchased app can be downloaded again without repurchasing, but its data may not return.

Delete or offload from the Home Screen
- Navigate to the app on the Apple TV Home Screen.
- Press and hold the clickpad or touch surface on the remote until the app menu appears.
- Select Delete App.
- Choose Delete to remove the app and its data, or choose Offload to remove the app while retaining its data.
This Home Screen route has the same consequences as the Manage Storage controls. The wording of the menu can vary with tvOS version or localization; use the Manage Storage route if the option is not shown where expected.

Before you confirm Delete
- Check whether anyone in the household still uses the app.
- Decide whether its local profiles, preferences, or other data matter.
- Remember that a purchase can be downloaded again without buying the app again, but the app’s previous data may not return.
- Allow for a sign-in or setup step when the app is installed again.
If those conditions are acceptable, deletion is the strongest app-level way to reclaim space documented by Apple. If they are not, use Offload instead.
What “downloads” means on Apple TV
Movies and shows downloaded on another device
Apple’s TV app library guidance says a living-room device can watch and share family purchases but cannot download, import, or hide those purchases in the library. Its download instructions apply to computers and mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and Android.
Consequently, an offline movie or episode downloaded in the Apple TV app on an iPhone or iPad consumes storage on that phone or tablet. It is not an Apple TV 4K file that you can remove from the Apple TV’s Manage Storage list. Check the device where the download was made if that is the item you mean.

Downloads inside a third-party streaming app
Some streaming services may expose their own offline-download controls, but the Apple documentation cited here does not establish a common download behavior or a universal downloads-cleanup screen for every third-party app on Apple TV. Do not look for a single system-wide “downloads” folder as a guaranteed fix.
Start with Manage Storage to see whether the app itself is using significant space. If the app provides its own download or cache controls, use that app’s menus. If it does not, the Apple-supported system choices are to offload the app while retaining its data or delete the app and its data.

Ask which device generated the warning
“My Apple TV is full” can describe two different situations. An Apple TV warning while installing or updating an app points to the Apple TV’s local app storage. A warning while downloading a show in the Apple TV app on a phone, tablet, or computer points to that device’s storage. Identify the hardware and the app shown in the warning before removing anything.
If you are unsure which action is safe
- You plan to use the app again and want its settings preserved: choose Offload.
- You rarely use the app and do not need its local information: choose Delete.
- You bought the app and are worried about paying twice: Apple says a purchased app can be downloaded again without repurchasing; deletion can still remove its local data.
- The app requires an account: expect that some apps or content providers may require sign-in after installation, particularly after deletion.
- The item is an offline video on a phone, tablet, or computer: remove it on that device rather than on Apple TV.
- You cannot tell whether the app data matters: offload first, then decide later whether a full deletion is acceptable.
What to do when the storage warning remains
Recheck the list instead of deleting at random
Return to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and review the current per-app amounts. Select another large or unused app if the first offload did not create enough room. Apple’s guide does not provide a universal recovery estimate, so use the amounts displayed on your own Apple TV.
Use deletion only when data loss is acceptable
If an offload does not provide enough room, delete an app whose data you can recreate or no longer need. Remember that reinstalling may not restore deleted data. A purchased app can be downloaded again without another purchase, but that does not preserve its previous local state.
Check whether you are solving the wrong device
If your concern is an Apple TV app download made on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Android device, the Apple TV’s app list will not identify that file. Manage the download on the device that stored it. Conversely, if the Apple TV warning appears while installing an app, use the Apple TV’s Manage Storage list and app controls.
Account for menu differences
Apple’s cited paths are for Apple TV 4K. Hardware generations, tvOS releases, and regional localizations can change labels or available features. When Usage, Manage Storage, or Offload Unused Apps is missing, confirm the model and tvOS version before assuming that a different control exists.
Do not expect an external-storage fix
Apple’s documented remedy is managing installed apps in Settings. The guidance does not establish a supported external drive, USB-storage expansion, or generic cleanup utility that directly expands or clears Apple TV storage. Concentrate on the per-app list and the Offload or Delete controls Apple provides.

A practical maintenance routine
- Open Manage Storage whenever an installation or update reports insufficient space.
- Sort your decisions by the storage amounts shown on screen, not by app category or assumption.
- Offload apps you may revisit and want to keep configured.
- Delete apps you no longer need and whose local data can be discarded.
- Enable Settings > Apps > Offload Unused Apps if you prefer automatic removal of unused installations.
- When the word “download” appears in a complaint, identify the device and app that created it before removing anything.
- After each action, revisit Manage Storage and verify whether another app must be handled.
This routine avoids two common mistakes: deleting valuable app data when an offload would have been enough, and trying to remove a movie from Apple TV when the offline file is actually on another device.

- Is the warning on an Apple TV 4K, and do your menus match its tvOS version?
- Did you inspect Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage?
