To free up RAM without upgrading your hardware, first identify which apps are using memory, close the ones you are not using, reduce unnecessary startup programs, limit background activity where Windows provides that control, and restart if the computer remains sluggish. These steps reduce active memory use; they do not create additional physical RAM.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include all the tools needed. Storage cleanup is a separate task: deleting temporary files can recover drive space, but it does not directly recover RAM.

What freeing RAM can—and cannot—do

Random-access memory (RAM) is the fast working area Windows and your applications use while they run. When many demanding programs, browser tabs, or background services are active, available memory can become limited and the computer may feel slow. Closing unnecessary activity gives the programs you keep open more room to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RAM is different from storage. RAM is temporary working memory; your SSD or hard drive stores files permanently. Removing downloads, temporary files, or old videos may solve a low-disk-space warning, but it does not increase available RAM. The procedures below target running software and sign-in activity rather than deleting personal files.

Microsoft’s performance guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 centers on observing resource use in Task Manager, closing unused apps, reviewing startup programs, managing background permissions where available, and restarting when needed. See Microsoft’s tips to improve PC performance in Windows for the underlying guidance.

1. Check whether RAM is actually the problem

Do not start by ending random processes. Measure what is happening first, because high CPU, a busy disk, a failing drive, or a single misbehaving application can feel like a memory problem.

Open Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. On the Processes tab, select the Memory column to sort running items by current memory use. Select it again if you need to reverse the order.
  3. Note which familiar applications are using the most memory and whether you still need them open.
  4. Open Performance and select Memory to see overall memory usage and how much is available. Check the CPU and Disk views as well; a different resource may be the bottleneck.

The percentage and totals change as programs work, so treat the view as a snapshot rather than a permanent rating of an application. A browser with many active tabs, a photo or video editor, a virtual machine, or a large game can legitimately use substantial memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the Processes list safely

  • Close an application you recognize and are no longer using.
  • Save work before closing anything that may contain unsaved changes.
  • Do not end an unfamiliar Windows process merely because its memory number is high. System components and security software can be necessary for a stable session.
  • If one known app repeatedly grows in memory or becomes unresponsive, close it normally first, then reopen it. Record the app name and behavior if the problem returns.

Look for a pattern rather than chasing the largest number once. An app may briefly allocate memory while opening a file and release some of it afterward. Compare the list before and after closing a program, and then check the overall Memory view. If memory use is moderate but CPU or Disk is consistently busy, RAM cleanup is unlikely to be the main fix.

2. Close apps you are not using

Closing unneeded applications is the most direct way to reduce active memory use. Start with programs shown under Apps in Task Manager, not with background entries you cannot identify.

  1. Save any work in the application.
  2. Close it using its normal File > Exit, Close, or window close control.
  3. Return to Task Manager and confirm that its memory use has fallen or that the process has disappeared.
  4. Repeat for other programs you opened but no longer need.

If a familiar application does not close, select it in Processes, choose End task, and accept that unsaved work may be lost. Reserve this for an unresponsive app you recognize; it is not a general method for cleaning every process in the list.

Work in small batches. Closing one large editor or a group of unused utilities, then rechecking Performance, makes it easier to tell what helped. If an app immediately starts again, check its own settings and the Startup apps list rather than repeatedly ending its process.

3. Reduce the programs that launch at sign-in

Startup programs consume resources after every sign-in, even when you do not immediately use them. Removing unnecessary automatic launches reduces recurring background activity and can make the desktop ready sooner. It does not uninstall the program or prevent you from opening it later.

Use Task Manager to prioritize candidates

  1. In Task Manager, open Startup apps. On some Windows releases this appears as a tab alongside Processes and Performance.
  2. Review the app names and the Startup impact information Windows provides.
  3. Select an app you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in.
  4. Choose Disable. The program remains installed and can still be launched manually.

Startup impact is a way to prioritize investigation, not a promise of a particular memory saving or boot-time improvement. A high-impact entry may be useful to you, while a low-impact entry can still be unnecessary. Change only entries you understand, and make a note of what you changed so you can reverse it.

Disable only software you recognize and understand. A chat client, game launcher, cloud-sync utility, printer helper, or update agent may be optional for one person but important for another. Leave security tools, hardware controls, and Windows components alone unless you know exactly what changing them does.

Use Settings instead

Windows also exposes startup controls at Settings > Apps > Startup. The labels and exact layout can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. Turn off only apps that you do not want launched automatically, then restart or sign out to check the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents both routes in Configure Startup applications in Windows. Task Manager’s impact indicator is useful for deciding what to investigate, but it is not a guarantee that disabling a particular app will produce a measurable speed increase.

4. Limit background activity selectively

Some applications continue checking for messages, synchronizing data, or refreshing content while you are not actively using them. Windows provides background-permission controls for some apps, but not every desktop program exposes the same setting.

Find the control when an app supports it

  1. Open Settings and go to the installed-apps or app-management page for your Windows version.
  2. Select the app, then look for an Advanced options or similar page.
  3. If Windows shows Background apps permissions, choose the least permissive option that still meets your needs, such as allowing background activity only when the app is in use.
  4. Recheck the app’s own settings as well; some programs manage synchronization entirely inside their own preferences.

The exact route depends on the Windows release and the app. If no background-permission control is shown, do not force a registry change or disable an unknown service. Use the app’s documented settings, close it when finished, or remove it from startup instead.

Background restrictions can affect notifications, synchronization, and updates. Decide what you need before choosing a more restrictive setting. For example, preventing a messaging app from running in the background may also prevent timely notifications. The goal is to remove activity you do not need, not to make every app function unpredictably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Trim browser memory use without losing your work

Browsers can keep a separate process for each tab, extension, or site feature. Close tabs you no longer need, especially pages running video, web applications, or large documents.

  • Save information from a page before closing it.
  • Close duplicate tabs and windows.
  • Review extensions and disable ones you recognize but no longer use.
  • Use the browser’s own task manager, when available, to identify a tab or extension that is consuming unusual resources.

If a browser session remains sluggish after closing tabs, exit the browser completely and reopen only the windows needed for the current task. Avoid installing a so-called RAM cleaner as a substitute for identifying the tab or extension causing the load.

Browser memory use is workload-dependent. A single interactive web application can use more memory than several static pages, and an extension may remain active across multiple tabs. Close or disable one suspected item at a time, then recheck Task Manager so you can identify the change that made a difference.

6. Restart when closing apps is not enough

Microsoft recommends restarting if closing unused applications does not improve performance. Save your work, close open programs, choose Start > Power > Restart, and sign in again. Reopen only the applications you need, then check Task Manager before restoring a large collection of tabs or utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restart is also a useful diagnostic step: if the computer is responsive immediately after reboot but slows as a particular application or workflow returns, that pattern points to the software you reopened rather than to a permanent lack of storage space.

Restarting resets the current session, so it is different from merely closing one window. Keep a note of which apps you reopen and when the slowdown returns. That simple comparison can reveal whether the cause is a browser workload, a background utility, or another known program.

7. Use Storage Sense for low disk space—not as a RAM cleaner

Storage Sense addresses drive capacity. It can remove selected temporary files and, depending on your settings, items in the Recycle Bin. It works on the system drive and may be configured to handle other categories. This cleanup can help when Windows warns that the drive is nearly full, but it does not directly free RAM.

Check what Windows will remove

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Storage Sense or the available cleanup recommendations.
  3. Review each category and its retention setting before confirming deletion.
  4. Pay particular attention to Downloads and cloud content. These are not automatically handled unless you configure Windows to include them.

Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Inspect the selections first if the drive contains files you may still need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage Sense’s defaults and available categories depend on your settings. Temporary files and Recycle Bin content may be selected, while Downloads and cloud files require explicit configuration. Read the retention choices before enabling automatic cleanup, especially on a shared computer or one where Downloads contains records you have not archived.

Choose the right Windows action

Action What it addresses When to use it Important caution
Task Manager: close a known app Memory currently used by that running application The app is not needed or is misbehaving Save work; do not end unfamiliar system processes
Task Manager or Settings: disable startup app Recurring activity after sign-in You recognize the app and do not need it to launch automatically Disabling does not uninstall the app; leave essential security and hardware components enabled
Background-permission control Optional refresh or synchronization while an app is not in use Windows exposes the setting for that particular app Controls vary by Windows version and application
Close browser tabs Memory held by pages, extensions, and web apps A browser window has accumulated unused or demanding tabs Save unsent or unsaved information first
Restart The current session and its running software Closing apps has not restored responsiveness Save all work before restarting
Storage Sense Free space on the system drive Windows reports low disk capacity It is storage cleanup, not direct RAM recovery; review deletion settings

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Use this order so each change has a clear purpose and you can identify what helped.

  1. Measure: Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and inspect Processes, Performance, and Startup apps.
  2. Close: Exit recognizable applications, browser tabs, and windows you are not using.
  3. Recheck: Look at Memory, CPU, and Disk in Task Manager. If another resource remains saturated, RAM may not be the main issue.
  4. Prevent recurrence: Disable unnecessary startup apps in Task Manager or Settings > Apps > Startup.
  5. Restrict selectively: Adjust background permissions only where Windows and the app provide a clear control.
  6. Restart: If the computer is still sluggish, restart and reopen software gradually.
  7. Separate storage problems: If the warning concerns drive capacity, review Storage Sense settings rather than expecting it to increase RAM.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing free disk space with free RAM

Deleting large files may make room on an SSD or hard drive while leaving the same programs in memory. Treat the warning you see—memory pressure versus low drive space—as the deciding factor.

Disabling everything in Startup apps

A long list is not proof that every entry is harmful. Disable only recognized, optional programs and change a small number at a time. If a feature you rely on stops working, return to the same Startup apps list and select Enable.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ending Windows processes at random

Task Manager includes services and processes that are not ordinary user applications. Ending an unknown item can close a system component or cause instability. Focus on apps you opened, browser tabs, and startup entries you can identify.

Expecting a guaranteed gigabyte figure

The amount of memory released depends on the apps, tabs, account, and workload active on that particular PC. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a fixed number of gigabytes or a guaranteed speed improvement for these actions.

Assuming every slow PC has a RAM problem

Use the CPU, Memory, and Disk views together. A processor-heavy task, a saturated drive, or one application that has stopped responding can produce the same impression as low memory. Closing RAM-heavy apps will not fix those other bottlenecks.

Installing a third-party memory cleaner

Windows already supplies the observation and control tools needed for this workflow. A cleaner cannot manufacture physical RAM, and adding another background utility can itself consume resources. Identify and remove the activity you do not need instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When software housekeeping has reached its limit

If the computer remains slow after unnecessary apps are closed, startup activity is reduced, and a restart changes nothing, investigate the pattern rather than repeating cleanup. Check whether CPU or Disk remains near maximum, whether one known application is responsible, and whether the slowdown occurs only in a particular task.

Older PCs with outdated hardware may not show a significant improvement from performance troubleshooting. Software housekeeping can reduce avoidable demand, but it cannot create additional physical memory. If your normal workload consistently requires more RAM than the computer has, the long-term options are changing that workload, using fewer simultaneous applications, or evaluating hardware—but installing more memory is outside the scope of this guide.

Quick checklist

  • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  • Sort Processes by Memory and close familiar apps you no longer need.
  • Check Performance to distinguish memory pressure from CPU or disk activity.
  • Review Startup apps and disable only recognized, unnecessary launchers.
  • Adjust background permissions only when Windows exposes a clear setting for that app.
  • Close unused browser tabs and extensions.
  • Restart if responsiveness does not improve.
  • Use Storage Sense only for drive-space cleanup, after reviewing what it will delete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting temporary files free RAM?

No. Temporary-file cleanup and Storage Sense recover space on the system drive. To reduce active RAM use, close unneeded applications and tabs or reduce unnecessary startup and background activity.

How do I know which program is using the most RAM?

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Processes, and sort by the Memory column. Check Performance > Memory for overall use, and compare CPU and Disk views so you do not mistake another bottleneck for memory pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to disable every Startup app?

No. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at sign-in. Leave security tools, hardware controls, and Windows components enabled unless you understand their purpose. Disabled apps remain installed and can be started manually.

Why can’t I find a background-permission setting?

Windows exposes background-permission controls only for some apps, and the route varies by Windows release. If the setting is absent, use the app’s own preferences, close it when finished, or remove it from startup rather than changing the registry or disabling an unknown service.

Should I use a RAM-cleaner utility?

No utility is required for this procedure. Windows Task Manager, Startup apps, background controls, and a restart provide the supported steps. A third-party cleaner cannot create physical RAM and may add another process that uses memory.

What if the PC is still slow after I close apps?

Restart, reopen only the software you need, and watch Task Manager as the slowdown returns. If CPU or Disk remains busy, or an older PC shows little improvement, the limiting factor may not be RAM. These steps cannot guarantee a particular number of gigabytes or a specific speed increase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Task Manager first: identify familiar memory users, close what you do not need, review Startup apps, and limit background activity only where Windows provides a clear control. Close unnecessary browser tabs and restart if the session remains sluggish. Use Storage Sense for low disk space, not as a RAM-recovery tool, and do not expect software housekeeping to create physical memory or guarantee a fixed performance gain.
