To free up RAM in Windows 11, first open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and sort the Processes list by Memory. Close recognised apps and browser tabs you no longer need, disable unnecessary startup apps, and limit background activity only for apps that do not need to sync or send notifications. Restart if the computer remains slow. Storage cleanup can recover disk space, but it cannot increase installed RAM. If high memory use returns during your normal workload, check whether your particular PC supports a RAM upgrade before buying anything.
What “high memory use” means in Windows 11
RAM (random access memory) is the computer’s short-term working space. Windows, open applications and active browser tabs use it while you work; the contents are not retained as working memory after a restart. Microsoft describes RAM as the device’s “short-term memory.” A high percentage in Task Manager is not automatically a fault: Windows and applications are expected to use available memory. The practical warning signs are sluggish switching between apps, delayed typing, long pauses when opening windows, or a computer that remains slow after you close the work you no longer need.
The objective is not to force the Memory percentage to a particular number. It is to remove unnecessary work, prevent apps you do not need from launching or running in the background, and determine whether your regular workload exceeds the machine’s capacity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with Task Manager instead of guessing
Open the Processes view
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If the compact view appears, choose More details.
- On the Processes tab, select the Memory column heading to sort processes by memory use. Select it again if you want to reverse the order.
- Look for applications you recognise and no longer need. Save any work before closing them.
Use the list to identify a cause, not merely a number to eliminate. A browser, editor, game, meeting application or other program may legitimately be using memory for the task you asked it to perform. Start with applications you recognise. Do not end an unfamiliar Windows process simply because it appears near the top of the list; closing a system process can interrupt Windows or another application.

Close an application safely
Select the recognised application in the list and choose End task, or close it normally from its own window. Ending a task can discard unsaved work, so normal closing is preferable when the program responds. For a browser, close tabs that are no longer needed rather than closing the entire browser if you still need the current session.
Task Manager also lets you inspect CPU, Memory and Disk columns while diagnosing a slow PC. A computer can feel slow because of a different resource, so do not assume that the highest Memory value explains every slowdown.
Reduce the immediate workload: apps and browser tabs
Close what you are not using
After identifying the largest recognised users, close programs that are not part of the current task. A practical sequence is to save documents, finish or cancel active transfers, close unneeded windows, and then check Task Manager again. Recheck after a minute rather than expecting every value to change instantly.
Trim browser sessions
Large browser sessions are an easy source of unnecessary concurrent work. Close tabs you have finished with, especially pages opened for one-time tasks. If you need the information later, save it in the way you normally use rather than keeping every tab active. Keep tabs that are part of the work in progress; the aim is to reduce unused activity, not to disrupt the task.

Know when closing is not enough
If a program does not respond, save anything that remains possible and use End task only for that recognised program. If the computer is still slow after unnecessary apps and tabs are closed, move to the startup and background checks below. A restart is also appropriate when the system has been running through many different tasks.
Stop unnecessary apps from launching at sign-in
Startup programs can lengthen sign-in and add work before you open anything yourself. Disabling an entry does not uninstall the app; it changes whether it starts automatically.
Use Settings
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Review the applications listed there.
- Turn off startup for an app you do not need immediately after signing in.
Use Task Manager’s Startup apps tab
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Startup apps.
- Review the Startup impact information to decide which entries deserve attention first.
- Disable only entries whose automatic launch you can give up, then restart or sign out and back in to evaluate the change.
Startup impact is not a promise of a specific RAM saving. It describes the entry’s effect on startup behaviour, not a measured number of megabytes that will be freed. An app that starts later may still use memory when you open it, so disable entries to avoid unneeded automatic work, not because the label guarantees a particular performance gain.

Limit background activity when you can give up notifications
Some supported Windows 11 apps can run tasks while you are not actively using them. This may support syncing or notifications, but it also creates background activity. Windows exposes a control for supported apps through the battery settings.
Change the setting
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Find the app you want to review.
- Select More options > Manage background activity.
- For an app that does not need to work while inactive, choose Never.
The menu is not available for every app. Choosing Never prevents that app from operating in the background while inactive, so you should expect to lose its background notifications or updates. Do not apply the setting to messaging, calendar, collaboration or other apps when receiving timely notifications is part of your workflow.
This is a targeted control, not a reason to disable background activity everywhere. Change one app at a time, then use the computer normally. If you miss an update or notification, return to the same control and choose a less restrictive option when Windows offers one.
Restart when accumulated work is the problem
Close the apps and tabs you do not need. If Windows still feels slow, restart the PC and reopen only the applications required for the current task. A restart clears the current session and gives you a clean starting point for observing memory use.

After signing back in, open Task Manager before launching a large set of programs. Note the memory level, then open your usual workload in stages. This makes it easier to see whether one application or the combination of several applications is responsible for the pressure. Do not treat a restart as a permanent fix if the same workload repeatedly fills memory; use the recurring pattern to decide whether startup, background activity or hardware capacity is the real issue.
Do not confuse RAM with storage space
RAM and storage solve different problems. RAM holds active working data while programs run. A solid-state drive or hard disk retains files across restarts. Deleting files can address a low-storage warning, but it does not add physical RAM or increase the amount of memory available to applications.
When storage cleanup is appropriate
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Review which categories are consuming disk space.
- Use the available cleanup controls or Storage Sense when the issue is insufficient disk capacity.
Storage cleanup can help Windows updates and file operations when the disk is nearly full. It is the wrong intervention for a Task Manager Memory problem. If your disk has adequate free space but active applications still exhaust RAM, removing more files will not resolve that memory pressure.
Choose the right intervention for the symptom
| Intervention | Primary resource or behaviour addressed | Reversible? | Effect on notifications or syncing | Restart needed to evaluate? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close recognised apps and browser tabs | RAM used by the current session | Yes, by reopening the app or tab | Only the closed app’s active work stops | No |
| Disable an unnecessary startup app | Automatic work at sign-in and startup load | Yes, re-enable the entry | The app will not launch automatically | Sign out or restart gives the clearest comparison |
| Set supported app background activity to Never | Inactive background operation | Yes, change the setting back | That app’s background notifications and updates stop | No |
| Restart Windows | Current session state and accumulated open work | Yes, by starting the session again | Apps are closed and must be reopened | The action itself is the restart |
| Use Storage settings or Storage Sense | Disk capacity | Some deletions are not recoverable | Does not increase installed RAM | No |
| Install additional RAM | Physical memory capacity | Depends on the device and module | Does not change app notification rules | Usually the hardware must be installed before it can be used |
When a RAM upgrade is worth considering
Software changes help when unnecessary programs are consuming memory. They cannot make a demanding workload fit into a machine whose available RAM is consistently insufficient. Microsoft’s memory guidance links capacity to the type of work: at least 4 GB for primarily web browsing, documents or streaming; 8 GB as a recommendation for longer-term use; and 16 GB or more for photo/video editing or other high-performance work. These are broad recommendations, not guaranteed minimum requirements for every Windows 11 device.

| Work pattern described by Microsoft | Published memory guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Primarily web browsing, documents or streaming | At least 4 GB | A broad baseline for that lighter pattern, not a guarantee for every device or workload |
| Longer-term general use | 8 GB recommended | More headroom for ordinary multitasking than the baseline |
| Photo/video editing or other high-performance work | 16 GB or more may fit | Demanding workloads can justify more capacity; the application and project size still matter |
Check compatibility before buying
There is no universal Windows 11 RAM kit. Before shopping, identify the exact computer model and check the manufacturer’s specifications for:
- Whether the memory is replaceable at all; some devices have non-upgradeable memory.
- The supported memory type and configuration.
- The maximum capacity the system can recognise.
- How many memory slots are available and whether an existing module must be replaced.
Compare those specifications with the memory pressure you observed during your normal workload. If high use appears only when you deliberately open more programs than usual, closing or staging that work may be sufficient. If it returns during ordinary editing, browsing or other routine work after unnecessary startup and background activity have been removed, additional compatible memory may provide useful headroom. Do not assume that a module fits because it is marketed for Windows 11; compatibility is determined by the particular PC.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
If memory is high right now
- Open Task Manager and sort Processes by Memory.
- Save work and close the largest recognised apps or browser sessions you do not need.
- Check the list again after the apps have closed.
- If the system remains slow, restart and reopen only the current task’s applications.
If the problem returns after every sign-in
- Review Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps tab.
- Disable automatic launch only for apps you do not need immediately.
- Review supported apps under Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, and set background activity to Never only where lost notifications and syncing are acceptable.
- Restart and observe the system before reopening your full set of programs.
If the computer is slow but Memory is not the leading concern
Use Task Manager’s CPU, Memory and Disk columns to see which resource is busy. If the issue is a low-storage warning, use Settings > System > Storage or Storage Sense. Do not delete files merely because you want a lower RAM percentage; disk cleanup and RAM reduction are separate tasks.
If high use persists during normal work
Record which recognised applications are open when the slowdown occurs and whether closing one changes the experience. Remove unnecessary startup and background load first. Then check the PC manufacturer’s memory limits and replaceability. Only after those checks should you decide whether a compatible RAM upgrade is practical.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ending unfamiliar processes: Memory use alone is not evidence that a Windows process is safe to terminate. Start with applications you recognise.
- Disabling every startup entry: Some apps need to be ready at sign-in. Disable only what you do not need immediately.
- Setting every background app to Never: This can stop notifications and updates you rely on. Apply it selectively.
- Expecting disk cleanup to add RAM: Storage Sense and temporary-file cleanup recover disk capacity, not physical memory.
- Buying a generic memory module: The PC model determines memory type, maximum capacity and whether an upgrade is possible.
- Treating startup impact as a RAM measurement: The label helps prioritise startup review; it does not promise a specific amount of memory saved.
The shortest reliable plan
For most Windows 11 slowdowns associated with high memory use, work in this order: identify the largest recognised users in Task Manager, close unnecessary apps and tabs, disable unneeded startup entries, restrict background activity only when you accept the notification trade-off, and restart if the session remains sluggish. Use Storage settings only for a storage-capacity problem. If the same workload still consumes nearly all available RAM, check the exact PC’s upgrade limits and compare them with your workload before purchasing memory.
