Yes—you can reclaim PS5 storage without deleting your progress. Open Settings > Storage to see what is consuming space, then remove or move installations from Console Storage > Games and Apps. Keep the separate saved-data controls untouched. Deleting a purchased game removes its installation, not your purchase entitlement; Sony says you can download it again from your Game Library.
The safest approach is to protect saves first, clean large installations second, and use USB extended storage or an added M.2 SSD when you want to keep game files available locally.
What you can delete safely—and what you must not touch
PS5 storage contains several different kinds of data. A game installation is the software needed to launch a title. Saved data is your progress, settings and other game-specific records. Captures and other data are separate categories shown in the storage overview. The deletion controls are separated for a reason: removing an installation from Games and Apps is not the same operation as deleting saved data.

When you delete a game or app from Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, the local installation is removed. Your purchase remains associated with your account, and Sony says you can re-download deleted purchases from your Game Library. Deleting the installation therefore does not, by itself, erase your progress.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Safe place for game cleanup: Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Separate area requiring caution: saved-data menus for PS5 and PS4 games.
- Other reclaimable categories: captures and other data shown in the storage breakdown.
Read the title and size on each screen before confirming. If a menu is labeled saved data, stop and verify your backup or cloud status before deleting anything.
Use this safe cleanup workflow
- Open the storage overview. Go to Settings > Storage. Review the categories and identify large games, apps, captures and other data. This gives you a target instead of deleting items at random.
- Open the installation list. Select Console Storage > Games and Apps. This is the area for installed games and applications, not your save files.
- Remove an unwanted installation. Select a game or app you no longer need locally, choose Delete, and confirm. The installation is removed from the console, while a purchased title remains available to download from the Game Library.
- Check for optional content. If a title offers Customize, review the optional add-ons or content listed there. Remove only components you no longer need when that option is available.
- Review captures and other data separately. Return to the storage overview and inspect those categories. Delete only items you recognize and no longer need, using the on-screen confirmation details.
- Stop before saved-data deletion. If the item you selected is under a saved-data menu, do not confirm until you have checked cloud synchronization or made the appropriate PS4 USB backup described below.
Sony does not publish a universal number of gigabytes that any one cleanup action will recover. The result depends on the games, add-ons, captures and other data stored on your particular console. A large installation may be the fastest win for one player, while another may recover more by removing optional content or old captures.
How to protect saves before changing storage
PS5 and PS4 saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage
If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, confirm that your saves are synchronized before using any saved-data controls. Sony’s upload path is:

- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5 or PS4).
- Select Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Choose Upload to Cloud Storage.
Use the PS5 or PS4 choice that matches the save you are protecting. Cloud capacity is listed by Sony as 100 GB for PlayStation Plus members on its storage-solutions guidance accessed October 18, 2026. That allowance can change with plan terms or service updates, so check the capacity shown on your account before relying on it for a large library of saves.
Uploading is a protection step, not a way to create more game-installation space. Saved data and installed games are managed through different controls, so leave the save entry in place unless you deliberately intend to remove it after confirming a usable backup.
PS4 saves copied to a USB drive
PS4 saved data has an additional backup option. From the saved-data settings, use:
- Saved Data (PS4)
- Upload or Delete from Console Storage
- Copy to USB Drive
This creates a separate copy of PS4 saves on the USB drive. It does not apply to PS5 saved data. Keep the drive connected until the copy completes, and identify it clearly if it also contains game installations so you do not confuse a PS4 save backup with game-file storage.
The PS5-save limitation to remember
Sony explicitly states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the PS5 console to a USB drive. A USB drive used as game storage is therefore not a supported destination for a PS5 save backup. For PS5 saves, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage when available and verify synchronization before changing saved-data settings.
The storage matrix is easy to misread: game data can use USB extended storage or M.2 storage, while saved data is handled through cloud storage; PS4 saved data additionally supports USB copying. Do not infer that because a drive can hold a PS5 game, it can also hold that game’s PS5 save.

Delete a game while keeping its progress
For a purchased game, deleting the installation is a storage decision, not an account-ownership decision. The practical sequence is:
- Confirm the current save is synchronized to PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you use the service.
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game installation, not a saved-data entry.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
- When you want to play again, open Game Library, find the purchased title and download it again.
Deleting the installation can reclaim its local game files immediately, but you will need to download the game again before playing it if no local copy remains on another supported storage device. Your save protection depends on the separate saved-data process, so do not treat a game deletion as a save backup.
Recommended Free Tools
This also applies when you bought downloadable content with the game: deleting the installed application does not remove the purchase entitlement. You may need to download the base game and any needed add-ons again when you return to it. If the title is available on another supported storage location, you can move it instead and avoid a fresh download.
Move games instead of deleting them
Moving preserves a local game installation on another storage location, which is useful when you expect to play the title again but need internal space now. Sony says games can be moved between PS5 console storage, a connected USB extended-storage device and an added M.2 SSD when the destination supports that content.
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game.
- Press the Options button.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the available USB or M.2 destination and confirm the move.
The destination choices depend on the game type and the storage hardware installed. Check the destination shown on screen before starting, especially when moving a PS5 title. A move preserves files but does not create a second copy, so do not disconnect the destination while the operation is in progress.
If a game is moved to USB and later appears unavailable to launch, that behavior is expected for PS5 titles. Use the same Move Games and Apps command to return the installation to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before playing.

USB extended storage: capacity and play rules
Sony documents compatible SuperSpeed USB extended storage in a capacity range of 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. This storage can hold compatible PS4 and PS5 games. Verify that a specific drive is SuperSpeed USB and falls within that range before buying; capacity alone does not establish every other compatibility detail.
PS4 games
PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. Moving a PS4 installation there can free internal space without requiring you to copy it back every time you launch it. This makes USB a practical choice for a large PS4 library, particularly when you want an external device that is simple to connect and move between supported consoles.
PS5 games
PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but they cannot be played directly from that drive. To play one, copy its game data back to PS5 console storage or to compatible M.2 storage. This means USB is useful as an installation archive, while the console or M.2 drive is the launch location.

Sony’s wording is explicit: “To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage back to your PS5 console storage.” Plan for that extra copy whenever you choose USB for PS5 titles. It preserves the download locally, but it does not provide the same ready-to-launch behavior as an M.2 SSD.

- Verify that the drive is a compatible SuperSpeed USB device.
- Stay within Sony’s documented 250 GB–8 TB capacity range.
- Use the drive for game installations and, for PS4 only, save backups through the saved-data menu.
- Do not assume that a drive holding PS5 game files can also hold PS5 saved data; Sony does not support copying PS5 saves to USB.
USB storage has the simplest physical setup because it is external, but it still has a use-case tradeoff: PS4 games can launch from it, whereas PS5 games are stored there until you move them back. Sony’s guidance documents capabilities and limits, not a universal price. Compare the listing’s capacity, SuperSpeed USB support and warranty rather than assuming the cheapest drive is suitable.
M.2 SSD: expanding playable PS5 storage
An installed M.2 SSD adds storage inside the PS5 and can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike USB extended storage for PS5 titles, compatible M.2 storage is a playable location for those installations.
Compatibility matters. Sony requires you to check the M.2 SSD requirements before buying or installing a drive; an arbitrary M.2 model should not be assumed to work. Confirm the drive against Sony’s current compatibility guidance, then follow the console’s installation and formatting prompts. A drive that merely has an M.2 label is not automatically supported.
Use M.2 storage when you want a larger library of PS5 games that remains ready to launch without copying titles back from USB. It involves an internal installation and a compatibility check, whereas USB extended storage is external and simpler to connect. The official guidance does not establish one universal price advantage: account for the SSD itself and the added installation effort when comparing the options.
Which storage choice fits your situation?
| Choice | Storage result | Future access | Play location | Save protection | Setup and cost consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete an installation | Reclaims the installation’s local space immediately | Purchased titles can be downloaded again from Game Library | Download the game again before playing if no other local copy exists | Managed separately; deleting the installation is not a save backup | No storage purchase; future downloads use time and bandwidth |
| USB extended storage | Moves compatible game files off internal storage | Local game files remain on the external drive | PS4 games can run from USB; PS5 games must be copied to console or M.2 storage to play | PS4 saves can be copied to USB; PS5 saves cannot | External, straightforward setup; choose a compatible 250 GB–8 TB SuperSpeed USB drive |
| M.2 SSD | Adds internal storage for game installations | Game files remain available on the added drive | Compatible PS5 and PS4 games can be downloaded, copied and launched from M.2 storage | Saved data remains governed by cloud and console-save controls | Requires an internal installation and a Sony compatibility check; prices vary by drive |
Choose deletion when you need space immediately and do not mind downloading later. Choose USB when you want an external archive or direct play for PS4 games. Choose an M.2 SSD when you need additional playable space for PS5 titles and are prepared to verify compatibility and install the drive.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Deleting from the wrong menu
The most serious mistake is selecting a saved-data entry while intending to remove a game installation. Return to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps for installations. Treat any saved-data menu as a separate operation.
Assuming USB storage can launch PS5 games
USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data, but PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before they can be played. If a title appears unavailable after a move, use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to return it to a playable destination.
Using a USB drive as a PS5-save backup
That workflow is unsupported. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saves, and verify the upload path before deleting or changing saved data.

Buying an incompatible M.2 SSD
An M.2 label alone does not establish compatibility. Check Sony’s requirements before purchase and installation. If the drive does not meet the documented requirements, it should not be treated as a supported PS5 expansion option.
Expecting every cleanup to recover the same amount
Recovery varies by console. A large game, optional add-on, capture collection or other-data category may be the biggest opportunity for one player but not another. Use the storage overview to identify your actual largest categories before choosing what to remove.
Confusing a move with a backup
Moving an installation transfers the game files to another storage location; it does not duplicate them. Save backups are a separate process, and a game moved to USB does not make its PS5 save available on that drive.
Forgetting the redownload consequence
Deletion is immediate space recovery, but playing the title again requires a download unless another supported local installation remains. Choose deletion when that delay is acceptable; choose moving when you expect to return soon.
A practical decision checklist
- Need space right now and can re-download later? Delete an unused installation.
- Want to keep PS4 games playable without using internal space? Move them to compatible USB extended storage.
- Want to archive PS5 games externally? Use USB, remembering that each PS5 game must be copied back before play.
- Want PS5 games to remain playable from expanded storage? Install a compatible M.2 SSD.
- Protecting PS5 progress? Upload it to PlayStation Plus cloud storage; USB copying is not supported.
- Protecting PS4 progress? Use cloud storage or the PS4 Copy to USB Drive option.
- Removing optional content? Use Customize only when the title offers it, and select components you no longer need.
- Comparing hardware? Confirm USB capacity and SuperSpeed support or verify every M.2 requirement before purchase; Sony does not provide a universal price comparison.
What to do if you still need more space
Start again at Settings > Storage rather than deleting saved data blindly. Sort your decision by the type of space you need: remove an unused installation for immediate capacity, move games to USB when an external archive is sufficient, or add a compatible M.2 SSD when you need more playable PS5 storage. Keep save management separate throughout. That separation lets you reduce game-file storage while preserving the progress that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete a PS5 game and keep my progress?
Yes. Delete only the installation under Console Storage > Games and Apps. Keep the saved-data entry untouched, and synchronize the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage first if you subscribe. When you reinstall the purchased game from Game Library, the separately retained save can be used again.
Will deleting a purchased game remove my license?
No. Sony says deleting a game or application does not remove access to the purchase. You can download it again from your Game Library whenever you need it.
Can I move PS5 games to an external hard drive?
Yes, compatible PS5 game files can be stored on USB extended storage. They cannot launch directly from that drive; copy them to PS5 console storage or compatible M.2 storage before playing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan PS4 games run from USB extended storage?

Can I back up PS5 saves to the same USB drive?
No. Sony states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saves. PS4 saves can additionally use the Copy to USB Drive command.
How much USB storage can the PS5 use?
Sony’s documented range for compatible SuperSpeed USB extended storage is 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. Check the specific product’s compatibility and connection standard before purchasing.
Is an M.2 SSD better than USB storage?
They solve different problems. USB is external and simpler, and it can run PS4 games while archiving PS5 games. A compatible M.2 SSD is installed internally and lets PS5 games remain playable from the added storage. Choose based on whether you need an archive or additional launch-ready space; prices vary by model.
How much space will I recover?
There is no universal figure. Recovery depends on the sizes of your installed games, optional add-ons, captures and other data. The storage overview shows where your own console has the largest reclaimable categories.
Where should I back up PS4 saves?
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB drive through Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive. Keep PS5 saves in supported PlayStation Plus cloud storage rather than attempting a USB copy.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move PS5 games to an external hard drive?
Yes. USB extended storage can hold PS5 game files, but PS5 games must be copied back to console or compatible M.2 storage before they can be played.
Can I copy PS5 saves to USB?
No. Sony does not support copying PS5 saved data from the console to a USB drive. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage instead.
What USB capacity works with PS5 extended storage?
Sony documents compatible SuperSpeed USB extended storage from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum.
Are PS4 saves different?
Yes. PS4 saves can be uploaded to PlayStation Plus cloud storage or copied to a USB drive through the PS4 saved-data menu.
The Bottom Line
To free PS5 space safely, delete or move installations from Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, never from saved-data controls. Purchased games can be redownloaded. Use compatible USB extended storage for PS4 play or PS5 archiving, and use a compatible M.2 SSD when PS5 games must remain playable from expanded storage. Protect PS5 saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage; only PS4 saves support the USB-copy option.
