If a PS5 says there is not enough free space, open Settings > Storage first. The fastest no-cost fix is to delete an installed game or application you do not need right now: Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. If you want to keep the installation, move it to USB extended storage or add a compatible M.2 SSD instead. Leave more room than the update’s displayed download size, because PlayStation says an installation may need to reserve approximately twice the required free space.

Check which PS5 storage is actually full

From the home screen, open Settings > Storage. The storage screen separates the console’s used space into categories such as games and apps, media content, and saved data. It also shows the available storage for each location connected to the console.

Check the location named in the error before removing anything. A game-update failure caused by full console storage cannot be fixed by deleting a capture from a USB drive, and moving a game between locations is unnecessary if the shortfall is on a different device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Console Storage: the PS5’s built-in drive, where updates normally need working space unless the game is installed on another supported location.
  • USB Extended Storage: an external drive formatted for PS5 game storage.
  • M.2 SSD Storage: a compatible internal expansion SSD installed in the PS5.

Do not treat the free-space number as a simple match for the patch download shown on the game’s update screen. PlayStation Support’s guidance for error CE-107872-5 says: “When installing data, it may be necessary to reserve approximately twice the free space required.” That is general installation guidance, not a promise that every update needs exactly twice its displayed download size. Use the console’s own space warning and leave a practical buffer rather than relying on a fixed gigabyte formula.

Use this order for a one-time storage shortage

If you need room immediately, work through the least disruptive options in order. This avoids buying hardware or deleting something important before you know how much space the update actually needs.

  1. Open Settings > Storage and note the free space on the location that is short.
  2. In Console Storage > Games and Apps, sort through titles you have finished or do not expect to play soon.
  3. Use Customize on a game that offers it to remove only an unused add-on or portion.
  4. Delete one unneeded game or application, then check the free-space figure again.
  5. If you want to preserve the installed files, move the title to USB extended storage instead of deleting it.
  6. Retry the update and follow the amount requested by the console. Only consider an M.2 SSD if running short is a recurring problem.

This sequence also makes the cost trade-off clear: deleting is free but requires a later redownload, moving to an existing USB drive preserves the files, and buying an external drive or M.2 SSD adds hardware cost and setup time.

Delete an unneeded game or application

Deleting is normally the quickest way to create room without buying hardware. It removes the installed files, not your entitlement to a purchased digital game. PlayStation says deleted purchased games and applications remain available to download again from your game library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Choose Console Storage, then Games and Apps.
  4. Select one or more games or applications you no longer need installed.
  5. Choose Delete and confirm.

After deletion, return to the storage screen and verify that the free-space figure increased. Start the update only after the console reports enough available space. If you later need a deleted digital title, open your game library and download it again; the download time and any required game updates will apply again.

A disc-installed title is a different practical case: keep the disc available if you plan to reinstall or play that title, and do not assume that deleting it eliminates the need for the disc later. The storage guidance confirms redownloading for purchased games, but it does not make a blanket promise about every disc scenario.

What deletion does not remove

Installed game files are separate from saved progress. Do not delete saved data casually when your goal is only to remove an installation. The storage categories identify saved data separately, and deleting the game from Games and Apps is the safer route for preserving progress.

Captures and other media are also separate from game installations. Review them only if the storage screen shows media as a significant consumer of space and you have backed up anything you want to keep. Cloud saves are a separate destination and require PlayStation Plus; they should not be treated as a substitute for checking which local data you are removing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Customize when a game offers it

Some games show a Customize option in the Games and Apps storage view. Depending on the title, this can allow removal of unused add-ons or portions of the game, such as content you have finished, while retaining the rest of the installation. The option is game-dependent: its presence, removable components, and space recovered vary by title.

Read the components listed in the Customize screen before confirming. Removing a language pack, campaign, or add-on may change what is available until that component is downloaded again. Selective removal is useful when you need a modest amount of space but want to avoid moving or deleting the entire game.

Compare the three ways to make room

Approach Speed and cost Is the game data retained? Can you play immediately from the destination? Setup effort
Delete and redownload later Usually fastest; no purchase required No local installation; digital purchases can be downloaded again from the library No, until the game is downloaded and installed again Low
Move to USB extended storage Requires a compatible external drive; moving avoids a new download Yes, the game data remains on the drive PS5 games must be copied back to console or M.2 storage; PS4 games can run directly from the USB drive Moderate: format, move, and safely disconnect the drive
Install a compatible M.2 SSD Higher hardware cost and installation effort Yes, on the added internal storage Supported PS5 and PS4 games can be stored and launched from the M.2 SSD Higher: verify specifications, install the drive, and format it in the PS5

For a one-time shortage, deletion is generally the least disruptive choice. USB extended storage is useful when you want to archive PS5 games without downloading them again, while an M.2 SSD is the more complete expansion when you regularly need games to remain playable from added storage.

There is no need to purchase a device just to complete a single update. A PS5-compatible external storage drive is an optional archive solution, while a compatible M.2 SSD for PS5 is an optional internal expansion. Product prices, availability, and compatibility vary, so verify current specifications rather than choosing by brand name or capacity alone.

Move games to USB extended storage

A commercially available USB drive can be formatted as extended storage for PS5 games. It can hold both PS5 and PS4 game data, but the two generations behave differently when you try to play them.

  • PS5 games: they can be stored on USB extended storage, but you must copy them back to console storage or compatible M.2 SSD storage before launching them.
  • PS4 games: they can be played directly from USB extended storage.

That makes USB extended storage a good fit for a backlog or games you play occasionally. It avoids another full download, but it is not a way to run a PS5 game directly from the external drive. If immediate play from the added location matters, an M.2 SSD is the better match.

Format a drive for extended storage

Formatting erases the drive. Copy off any files you need before using it with the PS5.

  1. Connect the USB drive to the PS5 and open Settings > Storage.
  2. Choose the USB storage option and select the command to format it as extended storage.
  3. Confirm the warning and wait for formatting to finish.
  4. Use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps to select installed titles, choose Move, and select the USB extended-storage destination when offered.

The PlayStation storage-solutions overview lists USB drives from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. Confirm the current requirements for your region and console software before buying or formatting a drive, since menu labels and supported specifications can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move a title without deleting it

In Games and Apps, select the title you want to relocate and use the move command rather than Delete. The PS5 transfers the installed data, so the title remains available on the external drive. Moving is slower than deleting a small application because the console must copy the files, but it preserves the installation and avoids a later redownload.

Plan the move around the update. If the game must be copied back before it can run, the console will need enough room on console or M.2 storage for that copy as well as any future update working space.

Safely remove the USB drive

Do not simply unplug an extended-storage drive while the PS5 is powered on. Use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5, then disconnect it after the console confirms that removal is safe. Removing it during a transfer or while game data is in use can interrupt access to the stored installations.

Use a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion

An M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 provides additional internal storage for supported PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike a USB archive, it is intended to let you download, store, and launch games from the added storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check compatibility before purchase

Do not choose an SSD solely by capacity or the M.2 label. PlayStation specifies requirements such as interface, physical dimensions, read performance, and a heatsink. The drive must fit the PS5’s expansion bay and meet the current console specifications. Requirements and supported models can change with system software, so consult PlayStation’s current M.2 SSD requirements immediately before buying.

A heatsink may be built into the SSD or supplied separately, but the complete drive must fit within the bay’s height and length limits. An incompatible drive can fail to install, perform below expectations, or prevent the console from using the expansion correctly. No particular brand or listing is automatically suitable just because it is advertised as NVMe or has the right capacity.

Install and format the SSD

  1. Turn off the PS5 completely, disconnect it, and follow the console’s hardware instructions to access the expansion bay.
  2. Install the M.2 SSD and its heatsink according to the required orientation and fastening point.
  3. Close the bay, reconnect the console, and start the PS5.
  4. When prompted, format the M.2 SSD for PS5 use. Formatting removes existing data on the drive.
  5. In Settings > Storage, choose the installation location for new games or move existing titles to the M.2 SSD.

Expansion does not remove the need for working space during an update. If the game is installed on console storage, the PS5 may still need free space there for the update process; follow the storage location and prompt shown by the console.

How much free space does a PS5 update need?

There is no universal number for an unspecified game update. The displayed patch size is the download payload, while installation can require additional temporary working space. PlayStation’s CE-107872-5 guidance says approximately twice the free space required may need to be reserved, but it does not state that every game update follows an exact two-times calculation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason:

  • Check Settings > Storage rather than estimating from the patch size alone.
  • Follow the amount requested in the PS5’s installation warning.
  • Free additional room if the update still fails after a small deletion or move.
  • Avoid deleting saved data just to meet an installation estimate.

Large updates can also need room for a temporary copy while existing game files are reorganized. The amount depends on the game and the installation process, so a figure that worked for one title is not a reliable rule for another. If the console asks for more space than expected, treat that prompt as the practical requirement for this installation rather than trying to force a calculation from the advertised download size.

Retry the update after freeing space

Games and applications normally update when started. To check manually:

  1. Highlight the game on the home screen or in the game library.
  2. Press the Options button on the controller.
  3. Select Check for Update.
  4. Let the PS5 download and install the update, and keep the console connected to the storage location containing the game.

If the update begins, do not disconnect an external drive or interrupt the console while data is being moved or installed. Recheck Settings > Storage afterward if the installation reports another space warning. A successful download does not guarantee that installation will complete if the console cannot reserve its temporary working area.

If the update still fails

Once you have confirmed adequate space, treat the problem as a general update or system issue rather than repeatedly deleting random files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the connection and restart

Use the PS5 network test, then restart the console and try Check for Update again. A stalled or incomplete download can produce an update failure even when storage is available.

Install pending system software updates

Check for a PS5 system software update in Settings and install it before retrying the game update. Game-update compatibility and storage behavior can depend on the console software version.

Use Safe Mode only when ordinary steps do not help

PlayStation’s update troubleshooting includes Safe Mode options for clearing cache and rebuilding the database. Follow the current on-screen guidance carefully; Safe Mode is a recovery tool, not the first step for a straightforward “not enough free space on the console storage” message.

Delete and reinstall as a last resort

If the update remains broken after storage, network, restart, and system checks, deleting the game and reinstalling it can replace corrupted installation files. This is more disruptive than freeing space or moving the existing installation, because the full game and subsequent updates must be downloaded again. Confirm that your saved data is protected before using this option.

Storage habits that prevent the next shortage

  • Review Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps periodically and remove games you have finished.
  • Use Customize where a game supports selective removal of completed content or unused add-ons.
  • Keep rarely played PS5 games on USB extended storage, remembering that they must be copied back before play.
  • Use a compatible M.2 SSD when you need a larger playable library on the console.
  • Leave headroom on the storage screen instead of filling the drive to the last few gigabytes.
  • Back up captures and other media before deleting them, and do not remove saved data as a routine cleanup step.
  • Safely remove an external drive before disconnecting it, especially while the PS5 is powered on.

The practical order is simple: inspect the storage location, delete or selectively trim an installed title if you can, move it to USB if you want to keep the files, and choose an M.2 SSD only when you need a permanent playable expansion. Then use the console’s requested free-space figure—not the patch’s advertised download size alone—to retry the update.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I free up PS5 storage before downloading a large game update?

Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Delete an unneeded game or application, or use Customize to remove supported add-ons or portions. If you want to retain the installation, move it to USB extended storage instead.

How much free space do I need for a PS5 update?

There is no single number for every game. PlayStation Support says an installation may need to reserve approximately twice the required free space, but that is not an exact formula for every patch. Check the console’s warning and leave additional headroom beyond the displayed download size.

Will deleting a PS5 game delete my saved progress?

Deleting the installed title from Games and Apps is separate from deleting saved data. Avoid the saved-data category unless you intentionally want to remove progress, and back up anything important first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I play a PS5 game directly from USB extended storage?

No. PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but they must be copied back to console storage or compatible M.2 SSD storage before they can be played. PS4 games can run directly from the USB drive.

Can I redownload a purchased game after deleting it?

Yes. PlayStation says deleted purchased games and applications remain available in your game library. You will need to download the game and any required updates again.

Is an M.2 SSD better than a USB drive for PS5 storage?

They serve different purposes. USB extended storage is a lower-effort archive and preserves PS5 game files, but those games must be copied back before play. A compatible M.2 SSD costs more and requires installation, but supported PS5 and PS4 games can be stored and launched from it.

Why does the PS5 still say there is not enough space after I deleted a small game?

The update may need temporary working space beyond its displayed download size. Recheck Settings > Storage, follow the console’s requested amount, and delete or move more content if necessary. PlayStation’s approximate twice-the-required-space guidance is not a universal patch calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the update fails even after freeing space?

Test the internet connection, restart the PS5, install any pending system software update, and try Check for Update again. If ordinary steps fail, follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode cache or database guidance. Delete and reinstall the game only as a more disruptive last resort.

How should I disconnect a USB extended-storage drive?

With the PS5 powered on, use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5 and disconnect it only after the console confirms it is safe.

The Bottom Line

Start at Settings > Storage. Delete or customize an unneeded installation for the fastest free fix; move a title to USB extended storage when you want to keep its files; choose a compatible M.2 SSD only for a larger playable library. Because installation can require approximately twice the required free space, follow the PS5’s own warning instead of matching the update’s advertised download size.
