Start with the console’s storage manager, not the game’s install screen. It shows whether the missing space is tied up by installed games, applications, screenshots, video clips, or other data. From there, you can uninstall a finished game, move it to compatible storage, or add storage hardware. Uninstalling a purchased digital game does not cancel your purchase: on PS5, Sony says it remains in your game library for redownload. The important distinction is that PS5 games stored on a USB extended-storage drive must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before you can play them.
First, find out what is using the space
A large game can fail to install even when the free-space figure looks close to the download size. The console also needs room for installation work, updates and system-managed data. Check the storage breakdown before deleting anything so you recover space from the least valuable category.
PS5: inspect the storage breakdown
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Review the categories for console storage, including Games and Apps, captures and other data.
- Open the category occupying the most space and identify individual games, add-ons, applications, screenshots and video clips.
- Compare the available space with the install requirement shown on the game’s product or download screen. Leave additional headroom for updates rather than aiming for exactly the stated number.
PS5’s storage tools also identify available USB extended storage and M.2 SSD storage. Sony’s storage guidance treats these as different destinations: an M.2 SSD can store PS5 and PS4 game data, while cloud storage is for supported saved data and a USB drive can hold screenshots and video clips.

Xbox: use My games & apps
- Open My games & apps from the Xbox home interface.
- Open the storage-management view and sort or inspect installed games and apps by size.
- Check for games you have finished, duplicate versions, unused add-ons and large captures.
- Record which titles are installed locally before removing anything, especially if more than one person uses the console.
Xbox menu names and storage behavior differ between generations and can change with system software. Use the storage-management commands shown on your console rather than relying on a menu path from an older model.

Choose between deleting, moving and adding storage
These options solve the space problem in different ways. The right choice depends on whether you need the game playable immediately, have a fast internet connection, and own a drive supported by your console generation.
| Option | Space recovered on the internal drive | What happens to the game | Saved data and captures | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall the game | Usually the game’s installed files are removed; the exact amount is shown by the console. | You must download or install it again before playing. A purchased PS5 digital game remains in your library for redownload. | Removing the game is separate from deleting saved data. Review each data category before confirming; captures are separate files. | Games you are finished with or can easily reinstall. |
| Move to USB extended storage | Most or all installed game data is moved off PS5 console storage. | PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage. PS5 games can be stored there but must be copied back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage before play. | Move operations target game data. Do not disconnect while data is transferring. | Keeping a large PS5 library archived, or playing PS4 titles without using internal space. |
| Move to an M.2 SSD (PS5) | Moves supported game data to added internal storage. | PS5 and PS4 game data can be stored on the M.2 SSD and used as supported by the console. | Saved data and captures remain separate storage categories. | Frequent PS5 play when you need more internal-speed storage. |
| Add an external or expansion drive | Creates another destination instead of repeatedly deleting and redownloading. | Whether a title can run directly from it depends on console generation, drive type and the game. Verify compatibility before buying. | Use the console’s eject or safe-removal command. | Large libraries, slow downloads or moving games between consoles of the same supported type. |
Free space on PS5 step by step
Delete a game or application without losing the purchase
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game or application you no longer need installed.
- Choose Delete, review the selected items and confirm.
- Return to the storage screen and verify that the free-space figure increased.
- When you want the game again, open your game library and download or install it while the purchase or subscription entitlement is still available.
Deleting an installed copy is not the same as deleting your account’s purchase. The entitlement is associated with your account, while the local game files occupy console storage. Do not select saved-data or capture categories unless you intend to remove those files as well.
Move a game instead of deleting it
- Open Game Library and highlight the game.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the destination, such as USB extended storage or an installed M.2 SSD, then choose Move.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before launching another transfer or disconnecting a drive.
This keeps the installed data available for later use without another download. A move can take substantial time because it copies the game’s files; the available space is not usable until the operation completes.

Understand PS5 USB extended storage
A compatible USB extended-storage drive can hold both PS5 and PS4 game data. The practical difference is what happens when you want to play:
- PS4 games: compatible PS4 titles can be played directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: they can be archived on the USB drive, but Sony’s instruction is explicit: “To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage.”
Copying a PS5 game back is normally faster than downloading the entire title, but it still requires enough free space on the destination and time for the transfer. If you move several games, label the drive or keep a written list so you know what is archived.
Use an M.2 SSD when you need playable PS5 capacity
A PS5-compatible M.2 SSD adds internal storage for PS5 and PS4 game data. It is the more convenient destination when you regularly switch among PS5 games and do not want to copy them back from USB before every session. Compatibility is not universal: check the current PS5 requirements for the drive’s physical fit, performance and heatsink arrangement before installation. After installation, format the drive only when the console prompts you and back up anything already stored on it before a format.

Clear captures without touching games
Long gameplay recordings and repeated screenshots can consume meaningful space. In the PS5 storage view, open the captures category and remove clips you have already backed up. A USB drive can hold screenshots and video clips, so you can export important moments before deleting local copies. Saved-game data is a separate concern; do not remove it as a shortcut for clearing captures.
Safely remove a PS5 USB drive
- Finish every move, copy, download and game close operation that uses the drive.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage.
- Choose Safely Remove from PS5.
- Wait for the console’s confirmation before unplugging the cable.
Never disconnect the drive while it is being formatted or while data is transferring. Interrupting either operation can cause data loss, corruption or damage to the drive.
Free space on Xbox step by step
Uninstall a finished game
- Open My games & apps.
- Use the storage-management area to select the installed game or app.
- Choose the uninstall command and confirm the items being removed.
- Check the storage screen to confirm the recovered space.
- Reinstall later from your owned library or an available subscription catalog, provided the entitlement is still available.
Uninstalling removes the local installation; it does not by itself revoke a digital purchase. Reinstallation still depends on the title remaining available for your account, region and subscription status.

Move or copy only after checking your Xbox model
Xbox storage behavior is not identical across console generations. Some drives are intended for storing games, some can run titles directly, and newer systems may require a specific expansion format for full-speed play. The exact menu labels and external-drive rules also depend on current system software and the game’s generation.
Before moving a title, open its storage or manage-installation options and note whether the console offers Move, Copy or both. Before purchasing hardware, verify all of these points in the retailer’s compatibility statement:
- Your exact Xbox model and generation.
- Whether the drive is supported for game storage, direct play or only media.
- The usable capacity after formatting.
- The required connection and cable standard.
- Whether a particular game generation must run from internal or designated expansion storage.
Do not assume that a USB drive that works for one Xbox generation will provide the same play capability on another. If the console offers to move a title but not launch it from the destination, treat that drive as an archive and move the game back before playing.

Which storage hardware makes sense?
| Hardware type | Capacity and speed | Compatibility question | Portability | Play behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| External USB game drive | Choose the usable capacity and interface stated for your console; formatted capacity is lower than the label. | Check the exact PS5 or Xbox model, supported USB standard and retailer compatibility statement. | Portable between compatible consoles, but each console may need to format or register it. | PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back before play; compatible PS4 games can run directly. Xbox behavior varies by generation and title. |
| PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | Internal expansion designed for high-speed game storage; capacity and performance depend on the selected model. | Must meet the current PS5 physical and performance requirements, including cooling provisions where required. | Installed inside the console rather than carried between systems. | Provides a destination for PS5 and PS4 game data without the USB copy-back step. |
| Built-in console storage | Fastest integrated destination, but limited and shared with system data. | Already compatible with that console. | Not portable. | Primary location for games that must run from internal storage. |
For most households, a compatible external USB game drive is the broadest first purchase because it can archive a large library and reduce redownloads. It is not a universal promise of direct play: confirm the console generation and the listing’s supported use. For a PS5 owner who rotates through PS5 titles often, a compatible M.2 SSD is the more seamless expansion because PS5 game data can remain on the added internal storage.
Plan the install so you do not run out of space again
Keep a small “ready to play” group
Leave frequently played games on the console or a destination from which that console can launch them. Archive completed campaigns and rarely used multiplayer installs elsewhere. This avoids deleting a game you will want tomorrow while reserving internal space for updates and new releases.
Separate games, saves and captures
Before a bulk cleanup, identify which files are installations, which are saved data and which are captures. Game deletion is usually reversible through reinstalling, but deleting a save or an unbacked-up recording may not be. Export captures you care about and confirm your save-backup method before removing any saved-data category.
Allow for updates and transfer time
A game’s advertised download size is not a reliable promise of the exact free space needed at every stage. Updates can be large, and moving a title to or from a drive takes time even when no internet download is involved. Start the cleanup before the game is ready to install, not after the installer has already failed.
Troubleshooting when the install still fails
The console reports insufficient space after deleting a game
- Reopen the storage manager and wait for the category totals to refresh.
- Check captures, applications, add-ons and other data; the game may not have been the largest item.
- Confirm that you deleted the installed game rather than only an add-on or shortcut.
- Restart the console if the displayed total does not change after the deletion completes.
The moved game does not appear on the destination drive
- Confirm the drive is connected to the same console and recognized in its storage settings.
- Do not unplug and reconnect during a transfer.
- Check whether the move was a copy that left the original in place, or a move that removed it from the original location.
- On Xbox, verify that the destination supports that game generation; on PS5, verify whether the title is stored on USB extended storage or M.2 storage.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
This is expected when the game is a PS5 version on USB extended storage. Copy the game back to PS5 console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from that destination. A compatible PS4 version may be playable directly from USB, but do not assume the PS5 version has the same behavior.
The drive was disconnected accidentally
Stop further transfers and reconnect the drive only when the console is idle. Use the storage manager to check whether the drive and its games are recognized. If corruption or a format prompt appears, do not format immediately if the data matters; formatting erases the drive’s contents. Restore from another copy or redownload only after you have decided that the existing data cannot be recovered through the console’s normal storage tools.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Need space immediately and can redownload later? Uninstall a finished game from the storage manager.
- Want to keep the installed files? Move them to compatible storage and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Need to play PS5 games without copying them back? Use a compatible M.2 SSD rather than USB extended storage.
- Mostly play PS4 games on PS5? A compatible USB extended-storage drive can store and run those PS4 games directly.
- Use Xbox? Identify the exact generation and model before buying a drive or assuming a moved game will run from it.
- Protecting saves and recordings? Handle saved data and captures separately from game installations, and back up anything irreplaceable first.
