Check your console model first: the Nintendo eShop listing for Pokémon Legends: Z-A shows 6.0 GB on Nintendo Switch and 11.2 GB on Nintendo Switch 2. Those figures are the listed software size, not a promise that every installation will need exactly that amount; Nintendo warns that required space can vary. Compare the listing with the free-space figure in System Settings > Data Management, then archive or delete unused software. If internal storage is still too tight, use a compatible microSD card. Archiving or deleting downloaded software does not remove its save data.
How much storage does Pokémon Legends: Z-A need?
The required space depends on which Switch-family console you use. Nintendo’s eShop listing accessed on October 16, 2026, gives these figures:
| Console | Space shown on the eShop listing | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | 6.0 GB | The listed download requirement for the original Switch family. Nintendo notes that the actual amount needed can be more or less. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 11.2 GB | The listed requirement for Switch 2. The same warning about variation applies. |
The eShop displays the required space before purchase. Use that number for your model rather than assuming the Switch 2 figure applies to an original Switch, or vice versa. Leave some headroom for an update or downloadable content instead of trying to finish with only a few megabytes free.

Check free space before changing anything
Use Data Management
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Read the console’s available-space figure and review the software list to see which titles consume the most storage.
Compare the available amount with the eShop listing or the installation prompt. If the free-space figure is below the requirement, make room before starting the download. If it is only slightly above the requirement, freeing additional space first reduces the chance that an update or temporary installation data will stop the process.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Check the installation destination
If a microSD card is already inserted, downloadable software normally uses it as the default destination. Data Management lets you see whether your large games are on system memory or on the card, so you can decide where to remove space without guessing.
Archive a game you may play again
Archiving removes the downloaded software files while retaining the title’s icon on the HOME Menu. This is the least disruptive option when you want to remember that a game is installed or expect to redownload it later.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management, then Manage Software.
- Choose the game or application you want to remove temporarily.
- Select Archive Software and confirm.
The icon remains visible, but launching it will require a redownload. When you select the icon later, use the Nintendo Account that purchased the software to download it again. Your progress is retained because save data is stored separately in the console’s system memory.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
Archive several titles with Quick Archive
For a larger cleanup, open System Settings > Data Management > Quick Archive. Select multiple software titles, review the selection, and confirm the archive operation. This is useful when several small games together provide the space needed for Pokémon Legends: Z-A; it avoids opening each title’s management screen individually.
Delete software when you do not need its HOME Menu icon
Delete Software removes the downloaded program and its HOME Menu icon. It frees the same type of software storage as archiving, but the title is no longer visible in your normal game grid.
- Go to System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software.
- Select the title you no longer need displayed.
- Choose Delete Software and confirm the prompt.
- To play it again, open the eShop with the Nintendo Account that bought it and redownload the title.
Do not confuse Delete Software with Delete Save Data. They are separate commands. Leave the save-data option alone unless you deliberately want to erase the game’s progress. Nintendo states that save data is kept in system memory and is unaffected by archiving or deleting software, so reinstalling the game lets you continue from the existing save.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
| Action | Downloaded program | HOME Menu icon | Save data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive Software | Removed to free software space | Remains | Unaffected |
| Delete Software | Removed to free software space | Removed | Unaffected |
| Delete Save Data | Not the software-removal command | Not the software-removal command | Erases the selected progress; use only intentionally |
Use a microSD card when internal storage is not enough
A compatible microSD card expands space for downloaded games, software updates, downloadable content and captured screenshots or videos. Once the card is inserted, Nintendo says downloads default to it, so new software does not normally consume the remaining internal software space first.

Choose the card type for your console
The original Nintendo Switch family and Nintendo Switch 2 do not have identical card requirements. Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express compatibility; verify that a card is appropriate for your exact console model before buying or inserting it. Do not assume that a card used in an original Switch is automatically the right specification for Switch 2.
| Storage location | What it can hold | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Console system memory | Save data and software space | Save data remains here even when downloadable software is archived or deleted. |
| Compatible microSD card | Downloaded software, updates, DLC and captures | Save data cannot be copied to the card. |
| External USB hard drive | Not supported for this purpose | Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported. |
Insert the card before downloading
- Power off the console according to Nintendo’s normal shutdown procedure before inserting or removing storage media.
- Insert a card that matches the requirements for your Switch model.
- Turn the console on and open System Settings > Data Management to confirm that the card is recognized.
- Start or resume the Pokémon Legends: Z-A download. With a recognized card installed, downloadable software uses it as the default destination.
If the eShop still reports insufficient space, check both the card’s available capacity and the console’s system-memory figure. A card can be inserted but nearly full, and some required data may still need system memory. Use Data Management to identify which location is limiting the installation rather than repeatedly restarting the download.

A safe cleanup order for Pokémon Legends: Z-A
This sequence minimizes the risk of removing something you still use:
- Record the requirement. Open the eShop page or installation prompt and note the figure for your console model: 6.0 GB for Nintendo Switch or 11.2 GB for Nintendo Switch 2, with room for variation.
- Measure available space. Check System Settings > Data Management and identify the largest software titles.
- Archive first. Use Manage Software > Archive Software for games you may replay. The icons remain available for later redownloads.
- Use Quick Archive for groups. Select several rarely used titles when one game alone does not free enough space.
- Delete only when appropriate. Choose Delete Software for titles you do not need shown on the HOME Menu, then redownload them later through the purchasing Nintendo Account if necessary.
- Check the save-data command. Before confirming any removal, make sure the screen says Archive Software or Delete Software, not Delete Save Data.
- Add compatible removable storage. If the library still does not fit, install a microSD card compatible with your console and retry the download.
- Confirm the result. Return to Data Management after the cleanup and verify that the available-space figure has increased enough for the listed requirement.
What to do if the installation still fails
The free-space number is below the listing
Archive another large title or use Quick Archive for several titles. The eShop figure is a minimum planning reference, and Nintendo warns that the actual requirement may differ, so do not treat an exact match as a guarantee.
The card is present but the console cannot use it
Confirm that the card type matches the console model, especially when using Nintendo Switch 2, which requires microSD Express compatibility. Then check Data Management to see whether the card is recognized and has enough free capacity.

You deleted a game and cannot find it
Deleting software removes its HOME Menu icon. Open the eShop with the Nintendo Account that purchased the title and redownload it. Do not delete the save-data entry while looking for the software; that is a separate operation that removes progress.
You expected a USB drive to solve the problem
An external USB hard drive is not a supported storage solution for this use. Use internal memory management or a compatible microSD card instead.
You are worried about losing progress
Archiving and deleting software are designed to remove the program files, not the save data. The save remains in system memory, so reinstalling the software allows the existing progress to be used again. The destructive command is Delete Save Data, which should be selected only when erasing that progress is intentional.

Internal memory or microSD: which approach fits?
Use internal memory when
- You have enough free space for the listed requirement and expected updates.
- You are installing only a small number of downloadable titles.
- You do not want to manage removable storage.
Use a microSD card when
- Your installed library regularly exceeds the console’s internal software capacity.
- You want to keep several games, updates or DLC available without repeatedly archiving them.
- You also need room for captures and want those files stored away from internal memory.
Regardless of destination, save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. Plan your cleanup around software files, not around moving save files to make room.
Quick Recap
Final pre-download checklist
- Identify whether the console is a Nintendo Switch model or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Use the matching eShop figure: 6.0 GB or 11.2 GB.
- Check the current free-space figure in System Settings > Data Management.
- Archive unused games, or use Quick Archive for multiple titles.
- Delete software only when you are comfortable removing its HOME Menu icon.
- Do not choose Delete Save Data unless erasing progress is the goal.
- Insert a console-compatible microSD card if internal storage remains insufficient.
- Verify available space again before starting the download.
