To reclaim Jellyfin disk space safely, first identify the cache and transcode locations used by your installation, then run the built-in Clear Cache Folder and Clear Transcodes Folder maintenance tasks from the administrator dashboard. Finally, check free space on the filesystem that actually stores those directories. Do not delete files from a guessed path, your media folders, the Jellyfin database, or the general configuration directory.
What you can remove safely
Jellyfin separates temporary playback output from your permanent library. The server exposes two maintenance tasks for the cleanup:
- Clear Cache Folder removes contents from Jellyfin’s configured cache location, which can include downloaded or generated artwork and other cached data.
- Clear Transcodes Folder removes temporary files produced for playback conversion.
Both tasks can be started manually or scheduled. Jellyfin’s task documentation describes scheduled tasks as operations that run periodically and says they can also be triggered manually with the run button. The labels and screen arrangement can differ slightly between Jellyfin versions, but the task names are the important part.
Clearing these folders does not remove your video or audio files, library records, users, plugins, or server settings when you use the maintenance tasks. It does mean that Jellyfin may need to recreate cache data later, and any playback transcode currently in progress may be interrupted if its temporary files are removed.

Before you start: verify the installation and paths
There is no universal Jellyfin cache path. The effective location depends on how Jellyfin was installed, whether an administrator overrode the default, and whether the server runs inside a container or a managed NAS application.
Use the administrator dashboard
- Sign in with a Jellyfin administrator account.
- Open the administrator dashboard and go to the server’s Paths view. Jellyfin’s migration and backup guidance directs administrators to Dashboard > Paths when checking these locations.
- Record the displayed data, cache, and transcoding paths before inspecting the filesystem.
- Note the installation type: native package, portable installation, container, virtual machine, or a NAS-managed application.
The path shown by Jellyfin is the path visible to the server process. In a container, that may be an internal path such as a mount point rather than the directory on the host. A host volume mapping determines where the data really consumes space. For a NAS application, the application’s storage configuration can add another layer between the path displayed in Jellyfin and the dataset or share you must monitor.
Understand cache-directory precedence
Jellyfin’s configuration documentation gives this precedence for the cache directory:
- The command-line
--cachediroption. - The
JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIRenvironment variable. - The platform-dependent default.
Documented defaults include a cache under the Windows data directory, an XDG cache location on systems that use XDG conventions, and $HOME/.cache/jellyfin in other Linux-style setups. Package maintainers, portable bundles, containers, and custom service files may choose different defaults. Treat any fixed path found in a forum post as an example, not as a rule for your server.
Check container and NAS volume mappings
If Jellyfin runs in Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, TrueNAS, or another managed environment, inspect the application’s persistent-volume or bind-mount configuration. For example, a container may report /cache while the host stores that mount under a dataset such as a user-selected application directory. Removing files from an unrelated host directory will not free the space used by the container.
Check both sides of the mapping:
- The cache and transcode paths configured inside Jellyfin.
- The host path, dataset, or volume mounted at those locations.
Only after those paths agree should you measure disk usage or investigate why the volume is full.

Measure the volume before deleting anything
Record free space before running cleanup so you can tell whether the task affected the expected filesystem. Use read-only tools and the exact paths you confirmed in Jellyfin.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Linux and Unix-like hosts
For a confirmed directory, check the filesystem with:
df -h /confirmed/cache-or-transcode/path
To see the directory’s current size without changing anything:
du -sh /confirmed/cache-or-transcode/path
If the path is a mount point, run df against that mount rather than only the parent directory. A cache inside a separate dataset can have different capacity from the root filesystem.
Windows hosts
Use File Explorer’s drive properties or a read-only disk-usage utility to check the drive containing the confirmed cache or transcode directory. The relevant figure is free space on that drive, not merely the size shown for a parent Jellyfin folder.
Container hosts
Check free space from the host on the volume or dataset backing the mount. A container’s internal df output can be useful, but it does not replace checking the host filesystem when the host enforces the actual quota.

Run Jellyfin’s cache and transcode cleanup tasks
Clear cached images and other cache data
- Open the administrator dashboard.
- Open the scheduled-tasks or maintenance section.
- Find Clear Cache Folder.
- Click its run button and wait for the task to finish or report an error.
This is the supported way to clear the configured cache folder. Do not substitute a shell command that recursively deletes an entire data directory. The cache task knows which configured cache location Jellyfin is using, while a manually guessed path may be wrong or may contain files that are not safe to remove.
Clear temporary transcode output
- Remain in the scheduled-tasks or maintenance section.
- Find Clear Transcodes Folder.
- Start it with the run button.
- Wait for completion before judging the change in free space.
Transcode files are temporary playback output. Clearing them is most useful after stopping active playback sessions, because a session that is still transcoding may create new files while you are measuring the result. If the task reports that files are in use, stop affected playback sessions and run the task again.
Schedule recurring cleanup when appropriate
Each task can also be scheduled from the same task interface. Choose a time when few people are watching media and when the server is not performing backups or library maintenance. A recurring schedule controls accumulation; it does not increase the capacity of the underlying volume.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Avoid scheduling an aggressive task during peak viewing if your clients rely on long-running transcodes. A cleanup that runs during playback can remove temporary output and force the session to restart or rebuffer.
Confirm that space was actually reclaimed
- Wait for both tasks to finish.
- Repeat the same
df, drive-properties, or host-volume check you performed before cleanup. - Compare free space on the specific filesystem backing the cache and transcode paths.
- If the difference is small, measure the confirmed directories again and check whether active playback recreated files.
If the volume is still nearly full, do not start deleting random files under Jellyfin’s data directory. Investigate other consumers separately: media files, downloaded backups, operating-system logs, container layers, snapshots, or unrelated applications may be responsible. Jellyfin’s database and configuration files are not disposable cache and should be handled only through documented migration or backup procedures.
Why transcoding can consume so much storage
Jellyfin’s storage documentation warns that a transcoding folder can require space comparable to the source media at an equivalent bitrate. Its illustrative example starts with a 50 GB Blu-ray remux and shows an output of approximately 60 GB or approximately 15 GB after transcoding, depending on the chosen output conditions. These are documentation examples, not a typical size or a guarantee for your library.

The amount created depends on what is being played, the client’s capabilities, the requested quality, subtitle handling, audio conversion, bitrate, and the server’s selected output settings. A short mobile stream may create far less data than a high-bitrate conversion of a long film.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDirect Play, remux, direct stream, and transcode
Jellyfin playback documentation distinguishes several paths:
- Direct Play: the client can use the original file and container without server conversion, so no full transcode is needed.
- Remux: Jellyfin changes the container while leaving compatible audio and video streams untouched; temporary output can still be created.
- Direct stream: the server repackages or adjusts stream delivery when the client cannot accept the original combination, without necessarily re-encoding every stream.
- Transcode: the server converts media to settings the client can decode or the connection can sustain.
The client requests playback according to its capabilities and constraints, then the server selects output settings. Therefore, a large transcode directory indicates temporary playback demand or conversion requirements; it does not by itself mean Jellyfin permanently duplicated the media library.
Choose storage locations for future growth
Supported deployments can keep cache and transcode storage separate. Separating them lets you put short-lived, high-write transcode data on a volume with enough capacity while keeping cache data on persistent storage suited to your installation.
| Location choice | Capacity consideration | Persistence and mapping | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disk-backed transcode directory | Can absorb large temporary files; size it for simultaneous playback and high-bitrate conversions. | Persistent across restarts unless the application or host clears it; verify the host or dataset mount. | Most general-purpose servers and installations where reliability matters. |
| RAM-backed transcode directory | Limited by available memory and can fill during a single large transcode. | Temporary and normally lost at restart; container or NAS mount details still matter. | Deployments prioritizing low-latency temporary I/O and able to reserve substantial memory. |
| Separate cache volume | Usually grows more gradually than active transcodes, but artwork and other cached data still accumulate. | Keep it on a persistent path Jellyfin can access with the correct permissions. | Servers where the operating-system volume is small or carefully managed. |
| One shared volume | Cache and transcodes compete for the same free space and quota. | Simpler mapping, but a transcode burst can affect the whole application. | Small installations with adequate spare capacity and straightforward storage. |
Jellyfin’s TrueNAS guidance gives both disk-backed and RAM-backed examples and cautions that RAM-backed transcoding can fail when a transcode needs more memory than is available. Treat available memory as a hard capacity limit, not merely a performance setting. A fast but undersized RAM mount is less reliable than a slower disk location with enough headroom.
Set a practical capacity margin
- Leave room for more than one concurrent transcode if several clients may watch incompatible media at the same time.
- Account for long films and high-bitrate sources, not only short test clips.
- Keep the operating system, database, logs, and backups on storage with their own safety margin.
- Monitor the host filesystem or dataset quota, not only Jellyfin’s internal path.
Troubleshoot common cleanup problems
The task is missing
Confirm that you are signed in as an administrator and that you are looking at the server’s scheduled-task or maintenance page rather than a client settings screen. Task names and organization can change between releases. If the task is absent after an upgrade, verify the server version and installation package before attempting manual deletion.

The task runs but free space does not change
Recheck the path displayed in Jellyfin and compare it with the host volume mapping. The task may have cleared a cache on one filesystem while the full volume is a different mount. Also check for active playback, which can recreate transcode files immediately, and measure the directory after all sessions stop.
The task reports an access or permission error
The Jellyfin service account needs access to the configured cache and transcode locations. Correct the ownership, permissions, ACL, or container mount mode using the controls appropriate to your operating system or NAS. Do not work around a permission error by deleting the parent data directory as a superuser.
Playback is slower after clearing the cache
Clearing cached data can require Jellyfin or a plugin to create cache entries again. The official task and path documentation does not guarantee exactly when every image is regenerated or how first-load performance will change across versions and plugins. Allow normal playback and library activity to repopulate needed data, and treat any persistent playback issue as a separate client, network, codec, or server problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA transcode fails after moving it to RAM
Check the free memory and the size of the RAM-backed mount. Jellyfin’s TrueNAS guidance specifically warns that a transcode can require more memory than is available. Move the transcode location to a sufficiently large disk-backed volume or increase the memory allocation before retrying.
What not to delete
- Do not delete media files from your library to solve a cache problem.
- Do not remove Jellyfin’s database files; they contain library and playback metadata.
- Do not erase the entire configuration or data directory when you intend to clear temporary files.
- Do not assume a path such as
/var/cache/jellyfinor/var/lib/jellyfin/cacheapplies to your package, container, portable installation, or custom mount. - Do not delete arbitrary files that merely happen to be near the configured cache directory.
A repeatable maintenance routine
- Check free space on the host volume or dataset that backs Jellyfin.
- Open Dashboard > Paths and confirm the effective cache and transcode locations.
- Account for container or NAS host-to-application mappings.
- Stop active playback if you want the clearest transcode measurement.
- Run Clear Cache Folder.
- Run Clear Transcodes Folder.
- Recheck the same filesystem and review task status.
- If capacity remains low, investigate other storage consumers or redesign the cache/transcode locations instead of deleting protected Jellyfin data.
This procedure uses Jellyfin’s documented maintenance controls, respects installation-specific paths, and distinguishes temporary playback output from permanent media and server state.
