You can free up PC storage without uninstalling games by reviewing Windows storage usage, removing only files you recognize, and moving personal files to another drive. Xbox storage steps and game-launch compatibility depend on the console model, so check current Xbox Support guidance for your exact console before buying or moving games to an external drive.
Free up space on a Windows PC without removing games
1. Check what is using storage
-
Open File Explorer and select This PC to see the free capacity on your Windows drive.
-
For a breakdown by category, open Settings > System > Storage. Windows lists categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved, and can show connected drives. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.

2. Review cleanup suggestions before removing anything
Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Windows may show Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps, along with the space it expects each selection to free. Review the items and select only files you understand and no longer need; do not select an entire category blindly. Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows explains these recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Be especially cautious with Previous Windows installation(s). Removing these files deletes the Windows.old rollback files and may prevent you from returning to the previous Windows version. Keep them if you may need that rollback option.
3. Use Storage Sense with its defaults in mind
Storage Sense can automatically clear temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. By default, it does not clean the Downloads folder or cloud content unless you configure those options. It primarily manages the system drive; other drives have separate storage controls. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense’s cloud-file management. Review the settings under Settings > System > Storage before enabling or changing automatic cleanup. Details are in Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

4. Move large personal files to another drive
Look through folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads, and sort files by size. Move large files you want to keep to a connected USB drive, SD card, or other external storage. They will no longer use space on the PC’s internal drive, but you will need the external drive connected to access them. Windows also lets you choose where new content is saved in advanced storage settings. Microsoft describes these options in Free up drive space in Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Make eligible cloud files online-only when appropriate
OneDrive Files On-Demand can replace eligible local cloud files with online-only placeholders that use less local storage. That does not back up a file that exists only on the PC: make sure you have a cloud copy before removing a local copy. You need an internet connection and access to the cloud copy to retrieve online-only content. Files set to Always keep on this device stay available locally and are exempt from Storage Sense’s cloud-file management.

Free up Xbox storage without risking game compatibility
First identify your exact Xbox model, then consult current Xbox Support instructions for that console before changing storage or buying a drive. The Xbox Support page titled Manage storage is a Japanese regional URL, and its available page content does not establish the menu path, supported drive requirements, capacities, or which games can launch from external storage.
Keep two questions separate: whether a drive can store game files and whether a game can launch from that drive. Do not assume that a generic external USB drive can run every installed game. Verify both requirements for your model and the games you play using current Xbox guidance before moving files or purchasing storage.
